An Overview of Oxford University

Advantages: High academic standards, reputation, university can be the best years of your life
Disadvantages: Can be seen as stuffy and old-fashioned, a lot of work, may not suit all

). This is quite a long op however (3,400 words), so I’ve broken it down into sections – feel free to skip parts on applications, what the various colleges are like, or whatever doesn’t interest you, but please rate it as a whole on the basis of what you’ve read. Applications The first thing you must ask yourself is ‘is Oxford right for you?’ Don’t be put off by allegations of elitism or any preconceptions you may have of Oxford. On the other hand, there are many things you must consider. Oxford has a lot of heritage, there are plenty of old buildings and ancient traditions still continued; coming from an old Grammar school, I felt at home in this environment, but others may consider it stuffy. More important is the teaching system. Courses at Oxford are often different from most other ...

The Oxford Companion to the Brontes

Advantages: A fantastic treasuretrove of information
Disadvantages: None

The Oxford Companion to The Brontes is an extremely useful sourcebook of all things related to the Bronte family. It is, in effect, an encyclopaedia on the Bronte family, and is clearly very well researched and very well written. It is also illustrated with copies of drawings by Bramwell Bronte. It gives details of the family not found in other books on the family that I have seen. It reveals exactly how it was that Patrick Bronte came to take holy orders in the Church of England, where he trained and it even touches on Patrick Bronte's time at Christ Church, Wellington, Shropshire. A curious omission in many books on the Bronte family, as it was in Wellington that Patrick Bronte had a volume of poems published, Cottage Poems. It also carries great detail about the plays that the Bronte children would stage, known as the Glass ...

Why Oxford?

Advantages: Friendly students and social life, Fantastic societies to get involved with, Proximity to London
Disadvantages: Very academic! Highly pressurised and very stressful

The aura surrounding Oxford is one which contributes significantly to the pressure on students who are accepted to the university. Not only do they have to contend with very intense workloads and deadlines, but they have to finish term without collapsing and return home to face the curiosity (and often anticipation) of friends and family - making it difficult to admit that the experience may not be as rewarding as it seemed initially. My own experience of Oxford (so far, as a 1st year) has been very mixed and very intense. Without a doubt, the college you find yourself at and the course you have chosen can make or break your time at the university - because there is simply no time to turn back once term has begun. The intensity of the institution demands excellent self-organisation and motivation, because despite the well-known tutorial ...
