An Overview of Oxford University

Advantages: High academic standards, reputation, university can be the best years of your life
Disadvantages: Can be seen as stuffy and old-fashioned, a lot of work, may not suit all

Oxford University is one of the most prestigious in the world. It may be second to Cambridge in the Times league table, but really this is relatively insignificant. The truth is that there are many top quality universities, and I shall not pretend that Oxbridge is automatically superior, when in reality places like York, Durham, etc can all offer at least as good facilities in certain subjects. As a current student of Oxford University (just finished ...
...must ask yourself is ‘is Oxford right for you?’ Don’t be put off by allegations of elitism or any preconceptions you may have of Oxford. On the other hand, there are many things you must consider. Oxford has a lot of heritage, there are plenty of old buildings and ancient traditions still continued; coming from an old Grammar school, I felt at home in this environment, but others may consider it stuffy. More important is the teaching ... more

...my place of further education, Oxford University. I was an undergraduate at Oxford studying Physics, specifically St.John's college, for four years from 1998-2002. I loved it so much that I've just committed another three years of my life to a doctoral degree in the Atomic and Laser Physics department. Why do I love it so, let me count the ways....... 1)STUDYING The reason (or at least it's supposed to be!) that most people come to University ...
...sort of workload Physics at Oxford entails. Typically a Physicist would be in the upper middle bracket in terms of the amount of work they have to do (about 2-3 hours of lectures and 3-4 hours of study every day). Of course some people take longer than other to complete work so this is just an estimate. The course comes in either a three year (BA) or four year (MPhys) variety of which I took the four year course. The two are basically identical ...

Oxford University - love it or hate it?

Advantages: You either love it
Disadvantages: or you hate it

I studied at Oxford for seven and a half years. I had never even thought about studying at Oxford (or Cambridge which I visited often as a child) when one day I was on a school open day at New College. I walked into the college and I simply fell in love with it. I knew then that I wanted to study there and have not regretted it. The application procedure for Oxford and Cambridge is slightly more complicated than for other Universities. There is ...
...-- So what is Oxford like? Well, you either love it or you hate it. Several people in my year dropped out within the first week of being there, simply because they didn't like the place. I loved it, and I think there is something there for everyone. If there isn't a club doing what you are doing, then you can set it up yourself, and some people do. However, there are numerous sport, music, drama, etc clubs. There is even an assasin's club if you're ...

Disadvantages: Work!

...church in Britain. Oxford Union: 'The Last Bastion of Free Speech', run by elected students and famous for its speakers from the world of Politics, Sport and Entertainment. Visitors in recent years include Michael Jackson, Rolf Harris, The Dalai Lama, OJ Simpson and Kermit the Frog. David Trimble & John Hume spoke in a debate on Northern Ireland there last Tuesday. The Union also runs social events and has a Bar offering Pound a Pint as well as offering ...

Whilst I've been here I've had French Politics, Political Theory & Philosophy tutes from published authors in those areas as well as Macroeconomics tutes from the guy who wrote one half of 'Two Sides of the Coin' a highly selling book giving both sets of the argument on the Euro. And the Oxbridge Tutorial system means that most of your teaching is done in pairs giving you much ...

The Oxford Bar Review

Advantages: Bars have their own individual character
Disadvantages: No centralised student venue

...(a bop is a stupid oxford word for a party, a college might have 3 every term. The Wadham and Bailiol bops are probably the best around, avoid the Hilda's bop whatever you do). THE BARS Christ Church This bar, set in one of the most impressive colleges, is itself quite impressive. There is more seating then any of the other colleges, a cheap table football table and friendly barstaff pulling cheap pints. However when I visited the bar there was quite ...
...by the bigwigs in the Oxford Student Union. Tuesdays night are the best nights as they do drinks promos. Only problem, last time I went there was air in the pipes. St John's St John's is the richest and one of the largest college, it seems, therefore, to have no excuse for its bar. The John's bar is one of the smallest and least frequented in the university. The prices are more expensive. Probably one to avoid. Keble Keble college itself is probably ...

More than just work

Advantages: College system, world-class reputation
Disadvantages: Pressure at times, work-centred attitude

...people expect to hear about Oxford University, but there is much more to spending 3-4 years of your life here than just working your guts out. Everyone knows that the education you will be offered at Oxford is world-class, but the sporting, arts and social side of things is also second to none. Academic work is still the main focus though, so I'll write about that first. There's no escaping the fact that the workload is intense - two 2000-word essays ...
...found that two things about Oxford help students enjoy a full university experience. The college system means that each student is part of a small, almost family-like cluster of people, and the opportunities for sports are great. I was in Exeter College, and I would say that becoming part of your college life is crucial to enjoying Oxford life. In each of the 30 Oxford colleges are 50-300 people in your own year group, who will go through more or ...

Oxford Brookes is a good University in a beautiful city

Advantages: Good facilities for teaching, socialising and sports
Disadvantages: Very expensive

As a Postgraduate Student at Oxford Brookes I had high hope when I enrolled. I have found the the teaching facilities and equipment very good. The buildings themselves in some departments are a little old fashioned on the exterior, but the interior makes up for it. There are many societies and clubs which are very active within the Students' Union. The nightlife on campus is good with events happening on most nights at the different bars around campus. Being within easy reach of the city, I feel, means that you can tailor your student experience in the way you want. Oxford itself has more of a pub than club culture, but there are some good clubs out there too, which I think compliment the club nights at the Student Union very well. Accommodation is of a high standard. The Sports Centre is particularly noteworthy as it has very high ...

PP for mE

Advantages: Interesting, challenging and flexible degree
Disadvantages: Non-vocational, hard work

As many of you will know, I?m in the third year of my PPE degree with Finals in the summer, and as it takes up a considerable amount of my time, I thought I?d tell you all all about it ;) PPE stands for Philosophy, Politics and Economics. It?s one of the most popular degree courses in Oxford, with around 300-400 students a year opting for the course. As the name implies, it?s a ?joint schools? subject, involving three disciplines. None of these are offered individually in Oxford, so if you want to do any of them, PPE many be a good bet. There are numerous other options available though ? such as Economics and Management, Modern History and Politics or PPP (Philosophy, Psychology and Physiology). If you want to do PPE, but can?t get into Oxford, it?s offered by several other universities ? obviously it?s not as widespread as, say ...

Linguistic Accuracy Avoids Face Slapping!

Advantages: Comprehensive and accurate.
Disadvantages: Print is a touch small.

Bilingual dictionaries fall into two main categories; totally useless, and invaluable. Forgetting the totally useless, of which there are many, the invaluable varieties are published by either Collins or Oxford University Press. I have lived and worked in three different European countries and have usually opted for the Oxford dictionaries finding them to fulfil the main needs of the second language learner, and especially the traveller and ex-pat. The reasons for this I will outline later. First of all, I must get something off my chest! Phrase books are only good for hitting aggressive beggars and over passionate Southern European males. To learn a long, grammatically complicated question and use it, will elicit a long grammatically complicated response that you will not understand. For example; just grunting the words 'want ...
