Advantages Advantages Good up to date information on the latest products

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cost is expensive if like me you dont trust the CDs

I recently purchased PC Plus magazine for the first time to help me decide about buying a new home PC. I don’t normally buy computer magazines, but an article about 10 awesome machines for only £699 court my eye when I was purchasing petrol one day. So £4.99 later I was the proud owner of the August 2001 addition! The review I was interested in tested 10 computers that were made by lesser-known companies. The computers where: - Atlas Meridian 1.2GHZ scored 8 out of 10 Best price Poweroid 1.3GHZ scored 10 out of 10 Big Red Pentium 3 1 GHZ scored 7 out of 10 Carrera SSC Pro 1.2GHZ scored 7 ... more

Advantages Advantages reliable, consistently high quality information, broad subject range well-presented, excellent value software

Disadvantages Disadvantages very minor issues encountered with packaging and subscription admin

When it comes to renewing subscriptions in general I will be the first to admit that I have a bad track record. I like to shop around, sample the competition, experience variety. So it is remarkable to observe that I have loyally subscribed to PC Plus magazine for about 10 years now and have every intention of renewing my subscription when it next becomes due. I look forward to its arrival each month, almost always find some articles of intense interest, and usually enjoy using at least some of the software supplied on the CD-ROMs. I regularly refer to back-issues (which I am reluctant to part ... more

Advantages Advantages Good helpdesk and masterclass sections

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Price slightly steep

PCPlus is a computer magazine that covers news, reviews, and new developments and also has a helpdesk section. ***FRONT OF THE MAGAZINE*** PCPlus usually has 3 “SuperDiscs” on the front. There is normally 5 – 10 full programs on the discs, and also freeware programs. There is also trial software, open source software and also on the DVD edition are Linux programs and tweaks. The programs are always useful, but be careful not to go overboard on the installation and the uninstallation! Also included on the discs are all the helpdesk and master classes, that are in the magazine ... more

Advantages Advantages Unasamedly biased towards the computer pro

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can concentrate a bit too much on programming

I conclude my mini-series of opinions on computer magazines with PC Plus. There is superficially a great similarity between computer magazines in the United Kingdom. Magazines depend on three things to make their living; a steady stream of news items, support from publishers and manufacturers to provide new materials, and a clearly defined target audience to encourage advertisers. Of course, that isn’t to say consistent and well-written content doesn’t have a very strong part to play, although if you are no stranger to this type of publication, you’ll realise that this isn’t always the top ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots of great information, technical help, tips, programs on the DVD

Disadvantages Disadvantages more programs than I can try out in a month!!!, too many ads but they are all the same

As an IT professional I am constantly in need of up to date information and good quality opinions. I usually get this information from magazines (for unrequested stuff) and from scouring the net for on demand information (i.e. when I need it!). To this end I subscribe to a number of publications, funnily enough most of them are from the same company (cue twilight theme song) – Future Publishing. PC Plus is one of the magazines I have quite recently allowed into this exclusive group! In a nutshell, PC Plus is really NOT ideal for beginner computer users. I really think it IS aimed at ... more
