PC World is, well, frankly, awful. The prices are too high, the staff are (by and large) uninformed and the choice of products fails to make up for this. I should stress, though, that if you find a member of staff who knows what he/she is talking about, go back to that person every time you go in - the chances of there being two in one store are slim!

The choice of products is... strange. If I'm buying a PC, I don't want a HP, a Packard-Bell, a Compaq. I want one with a certain clockspeed, a decent size HD, enough RAM, etc etc. I don't see why they sort them by manufacturer at all. A much better way to buy is somewhere like scan.co.uk, where you simply specify the details of your ideal PC, they make it from the components you want, and the price is worked out. PC World, however, seem to think that people only want certain combinations of specifications - none were ideal for my use, when I was last in.

One advantage is PC Healthcheck. For someone who doesn't know how to defrag their harddisk, or whatever, Healthcheck would be a really handy service. And Healthcheck includes free fitting on any new components you buy at the same time - but then the extra components are that expensve you need free fitting!

All in all, a service aimed at less knowledgable PC users who just want a PC they can use, and they won't have to worry about repairing it.

UPDATE:
Our family's PC is, in fact, from PC World. I took it along for its first Healthcheck recently (well, we've paid for them now...) and had a network card fitted. The network card almost works as intended (long story...) but sadly while the technician was setting up the protocols for my LAN he messed up the TCP/IP protocols I use for dial-up connections. It's taken me two days to fix that. And I still get this network sorted properly.

Their marks have been downgraded accordingly.

If I remember correctly PC World is owned by, or owns Dixons. Enough said!

I agree, staff with any real knowledge are few and far between. Twice they have recommended a particular product to me and both times I found it incompatible with my system which they had sold me several months earlier.
