Advantages Fast, efficient service
Disadvantages Was slightly misled in one deal (see review)
My main recent purchases from PC world have been a laptop, a camera, and a set of speakers. I have never used their online service so my review is based purely on their store in Sheffield (Meadowhall Retail Park). I was quite shocked to see the bad response from other reviews so I thought I’d share my own experience!
The shop is quite large and things are categorised well. It was easy to walk around and find everything. Because of its size, it doesn’t feel too busy even when there are quite a few people inside, meaning you can shop at your own leisure.
Staff are always around to help, sometimes they approach you and sometimes they don’t. I like this because you don’t feel under pressure to use their help and buy something, nor do you feel neglected as a customer.
When buying anything here, the longest I’ve ever had to queue for is about 2 minutes. Brilliant! In contrast is a visit to the apple store; the one time I did I had to wait to be seen by someone for 20 minutes! Which is a different topic altogether, but I thought it worth a mention because they are PC World’s competition after all.
I have found their prices to be quite typical of what is on the market (do correct me if I’m wrong). So pretty average really, but the laptop I bought got money knocked off for being an ex-display model so I rate the prices quite well.
My Personal Experiences
One of their services I am extremely happy about using is their insurance. I spent £70 on a camera, and thought I’d invest in their ‘whatever happens’ insurance for £16 I think it was. Sure enough, my new camera was dropped and the lens broken just a few weeks after buying it. So I returned to the store, telling them that I dropped the camera and showing my insurance print-out, and after giving the camera a quick look at, the technician said that it’s obvious it is broken, so go and choose a new camera and you will get £70 towards it. Simple as that! Better still, if I were to do the same again (which knowing me is a fair thing to assume), I can get another new camera, again free of charge!
When I was buying my laptop, I had found the model I wanted on the PC world website but could not see it in store. I asked one of the staff members if they had it and he looked it up and went to find it. I was quite sure this was the laptop for me, but I did ask him for a little advice to make sure. Even after telling him I wanted a Windows he did try to sway me towards buying a (more expensive) mac, but when saying again it was a PC I wanted, he dropped the subject and showed me alternative Windows laptops I could buy. He told me that the laptop is an ex-display model so I was given a discount of £200 for it. Also, because they had to re-format it (to get rid of what they had installed before) they said in addition they would set the laptop up for me (and install Microsoft Office and Anti-Virus software) which I was very grateful for. When I took the laptop home, I found out that a few things hadn’t been fully installed as promised, but I wasn’t too fussed, because in my opinion a discount and a partial set up was a good enough deal (and taking back my brand new laptop that I was so excited about getting was at the time just out of the question for my impatient self).
To me, PC World is a good store. I am happy with the experiences I have had there, and awarded four stars because of this. Their only downfall for me was that my laptop wasn’t fully set up as promised. I can’t say what the stores outside of Sheffield or even online are like, but if they’re anything like here, I say give them a try!
