Cool kit but be careful of the common problems Advantages: Versatality, VFM and free software availiable for Palm OS Disadvantages: Known issues and glitches ...to be converted for the palm screen but when converted properly (try VemoDe, totally free palm video convertor) they play very well. -The on screen keyboard shortcut doesn't work after a while meaning you have to use the character recognition, which thankfully works quite well! But on the plus side, there are tonnes of free programs and games availiable for it, an excellent mp3 player which can play for a very long time before the battery runs ... Palm Zire - the basics of handheld computing Advantages: easy to use, lots of programs, everything you need is supplied with the unit Disadvantages: no backlight, only 2MB of memory I've had my Palm Zire for around about two years now and it was great value for money when I got it (£20 in the bargain basement section of Woolworths) and I have used it on and off every day since. The software that comes pre installed is quite useful and it is very easy to find additional software on the internet. The unit itself ships with a CD containing the Palm Desktop software for synchronising the Zire with the computer, which means that ... ...Palm handheld and the information that was on your zire can be copied to that very easily. The unit also contains a usb cable and a protective screen. The zire is very small and will fit into most pockets without leaving a massive bulge. The internal memory isn't very good (2MB) and the screen is not backlit, but if you only want something to save phone details and your appointments on, the Zire can more than cope with those tasks. Palm Tungsten T (2nd hand BUYERS BEWARE) Advantages: Brilliant when new Disadvantages: After two years use it begins to deteriorate ...new "T" to replace my Palm Vx which had done me a good turn but was beginning to play up. I loved the "T" right from the start, it was fast in its work, small for my handbag or pocket and did all the usual things like Date Book, Contacts, etc and one press on the Hot sync button on the cradle and all my Word and Excel documents and notes prepared on the go were transferred seamlessly to my home PC using the Documents to Go programme which came in ... ...on the bright colour screen. Voice recorder is good too, but I soon changed the button on the side to "Date Book" for I often found the unit recording by itself having obviously touched the button by mistake on picking up the unit. Then after two years things began to go wrong, first thing I noticed was that the screen had "slipped", a tap with the stylus produced the wrong result! Great Palm Device, even today! Advantages: Very reliable, fast, THOUSANDS!!! of accessories, Upgradeable OS to 4.1, good amount of memory (8MB) Disadvantages: It doesn't to exactly everything today's handhelds can do now... I find the Palm Vx is just a great organiser. I mean, it's so slim, and not to mention there are literally MILLIONS of accessories available for it! At this time of year (2008) I'm sure most of us will go out and buy a new PDA. But, with the thousands of Palm softwares available and most work with OS 3.5-4.1 (with the upgrade) still. I think it's the best Palm device yet (and the Tungsten T3), they've put a lot of work into it at the time and was ... ...most users even today considering Palm applications are very small. Although this thing doesn't have an MP3 player, color screen or video player, it's perfectly good for anything other than that. 8Mb might seem like little today, but as mentioned before considering how small the apps are it's not an issue at all. Palm TX Advantages: everything! cheap reliable, fantastic features Disadvantages: no spare stylus or screen protectors in box I got my new Palm TX in August this year and I have been very impressed with its performance and flexibility. I previously owned a Palm Tungsten E which screen was 320 x 320 resolution and had no Bluetooth or Wi-fi, so these 2 features are great additions for me. For those who have never used a PDA they are all touch screen and most have handwriting recognition to save having a keyboard and in Palm handhelds this is called Graffiti and is very handy ... ...those long journeys. The new palm desktop software is similar to the previous but has a much easier interface for adding photos and videos by simply dragging and dropping and a similar new tab for adding your Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. The software package includes many useful programs.
