Looks nice, does the job
Advantages: Looks nice, inexpensive, long battery life Disadvantages: Not particularly fast or high-tech
I have owned one of these for about 4 years and still use it regularly. The device has a nice matte silver coating that doesn't scratch easily or come off as some do. The screen is a monochrome LCD with a cool blue backlight which is useful in the dark. The keyboard and other buttons have a nice feel to them and are spaced far enough apart that it is possible to type fairly fast - I have used the organiser to make notes in lectures and have been ... ...The battery life is excellent - the intruction manual says that the 2 AA batteries required will allow over 100 hours of operation and they certainly do. The integrated flash memory (3Mb) is far more than I will ever need - I am on 23% memory usage after 4 years of regular usage and I never delete anything.
Available menu options are: Calandar, Schedule, Birthdays/Anniversaries, To Do, Telephone/address book, memo, expenses, calculator, currency/unit ...

discontinued but still good
Advantages: brilliant compatibilty with normal linux software Disadvantages: only one CF slot can be an issue
Since the 5500 has been discontinued, the prices should be dropping where sold (hopefully) and they are available for very reasonable prices on eBay.
I've installed the OpenZaurus ROM image which looks the same as the standard ROM, but with a few very welcome enhancements and updates from the standard ROM.
With a WLAN CF card it is incredibly easy to update the software on the Zaurus using iPkg, and there are several websites to get application ... ...Zaurus, although the singular CF slot means you can't have 2 accessories plugged in at the same time, which can be annoying when you need the wireless card in all the time.
Overall I'd recommend getting this PDA for it's shear power for the price, although money being no object I'd recommend the 5600 or wait for the 6000 which looks like it'll be amazing. ...

Average handheld
Advantages: Does its job well Disadvantages: Ugly, average and cheap-looking
The sharp hc 4500 and 4600 models were introduced quickly to compete with the growing handheld market. Since palmtop and pocket pc computers have been rammed down our collective consumer throughts, the handheld genre has been near-descarded. However these sharp models have plenty going for them. The memory (16mb) is perfectly adiquate for anything you might try to do on a handheld computer, and the processor (p75) is eqaully sensible. Although there ... ...can be much more. the sharp models have colour LCD screens, which do their job well except with the more taxing end of the games market (i.e. Doom CE, Palm GB). Their keyboards are poor, but no worse than the rest of the models on sale today (with the exception of the the psion 5 series or later). The other features of the sharp are standard, with nothing particularly special to set them out from the crowd. The sharp is a perfectly serviceable handheld, ...

Bad Battery Life
Advantages: Size, Windows CE Disadvantages: Size, battery life
I Purchased the Sharp HC 4200G, it appealed to me due to the fact that it was running windows CE 2.0, I thought that this would make it very useful, The battery life reduces the usefulness of the product I only seem to get 2 hours on a set of rechargeable, The unit has a large screen and keyboard, it is a good size to use, but not brilliant to carry as it won’t really go in a pocket. It is still a useful tool but I seem to use my laptop more now ...
