PLJ is made by Martlet Natural Foods in Wellingborough and comes in a 500ml clear glass bottle. Depending on your imagination it either looks like a bottle of sunshine or a bottle of extra strong urine! Obviously I prefer the first comparison - I like all the sunshine I can get in my life. The bottle has a bright yellow cap with PLJ written on both sides. The label is decorated with lemon halves and leaves.

I can’t even remember how or when we started but I must have read or heard something positive and decided to replace my morning cuppa with a lemon drink. I found a bottle of PLJ lemon juice in Sainsburys and from then on we have been early morning hot lemon drinkers. The 500 ml bottle costs £1.45 which I think is very good value considering how many lemons must be used in its’ preparation.
The bottle lasts ages and the drink is simple to prepare. We simply put a splash of lemon juice in the bottom of a mug and fill with warm water. The immediate effect is of waking up those parts of you that would rather still be asleep in bed. It gives you a dig in the ribs as if to say ‘hey it’s a new day get up and get going!’ The taste is sharp and clear and full on lemon – truly invigorating.

So that you can’t say you weren’t warned PLJ advises you in bold letters that it is ‘Naturally Sharp’ and indeed it is. A splash in a glass of water is plenty sharp for me. Martlet Foods recommend diluting the product with at least 4 parts cold water but we must dilute ours many times over.
Interestingly it is alkaline which surprises me having always thought of all the citrus family as acidic. It is rich in Vitamin C as one 30ml serving provides 55% of the recommended daily allowance. This serving also has 11 calories, protein of 0.1g and carbohydrate 2.7g (of which sugars amount to 1.1g). Hurrah! No artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners.
You can drink this juice with water, sparkling mineral water or low calorie lemonade. In fact we sometimes add it to cheap lemonade to give more flavour and make a refreshing drink. As a comfort drink when you have a cold, it is nice mixed with honey and warm water. It is a single strength product and you can use it in any recipes that call for lemon juice. It is certainly easier to keep a bottle in the fridge than to have to run out to the shops when a squeeze of lemon juice is needed for that salad dressing or cake icing etc. Its recommended storage time is 4 weeks in the fridge but we have kept it longer than this without any noticeable deterioration.
Lemon juice has many different uses around the house and here are a few ideas that you might find helpful. Lemon juice will help to remove lipstick from fabric. You can use lemon juice on leather shoes after polishing and then buff them up. If your stainless steel sink needs a clean then rub gently with lemon juice mixed to a paste with salt and this will remove the stains. Rinse thoroughly afterwards. Another useful tip is that if a recipe calls for buttermilk just add a tablespoon of lemon juice to a cup of milk and let stand for five minutes before using. I found these tips on the internet and cannot vouch for the success of them however thought it was worth passing them on in case you would like to try any of them.
Look out for the bottles of PLJ with the other cordials in Sainsburys and give it a try and bring a bit of sunshine into your life.
Thanks for reading and don't forget to recycle the bottle afterwards.
...saw the familiar bottle of PLJ which my Nan used to drink years ago. i have now substituted this for my morning drink again as it is convenient to take to work.
It is such a refreshing drink and you get that really clean, healthy breath feeling. I is all natural, sugar and sweetner free and only 9 calories per serving.
This would probably not be to every ones taste as it is very sharp, but i can eat a whole lemon without blinking, while watching ... ...2 weeks, but i keep a bottle at home too and have been known to use it for salad dressing and marinades as suggested on the bottle.
PLJ is also an excellent source of Vitamin C so go on get your taste buds tanging and give it a try. ...

Quick review of PLJ Lemon Juice
I am over 70 and drinking Plj with Earls Grey Tea 2 or 3 times a day.
I use one sweetener, to take the sharpness away. I learned it from , grand futher, who lived over 90, Never had vitamins, and untill the last few months, he was the lifr of the party!
I do reccomend it for it's taste, for freshness and for vitaminn C .
today 4 large oranges cost more than a bottle PLJ.
I would like to know what the P stands for , if the LJ are lemon juice.Billgadd ...
