POC Joint VPD Knee Pads

First impressions

if you enjoy taking part in sports and/or exercise then I imagine as time has gone on your joints will have taken a beating. A lot of older people have joint problems even if they are not that keen on exercise, but younger people can also encounter problems if they exercise regularly. I have the odd ache on my knees, though as it comes and goes it is important to keep those joints supported throughout exercise.

Here we have the POC branded Joint VPD Knee Pads. These pads are designed to protect your knees and are designed for the joints. POC also produce hard support for bone, for your elbows, knees and legs. The type of pads I am reviewing are the softer ones designed for joint support.

These pads are rather plain in black with large white ‘POC’ lettering down the side. They cannot easily be hidden under clothing because of their colour, but as you are unlikely to wear baggy trousers for exercise, I doubt you would hide any kind of knee support.

My experience

The key to a good support pad is for the manufacturer to find a good balance between offering excellent support without weighing down the user. You don’t want to be running any differently or carrying your knee in a different way as you run due to the support. It is important to just carry on as normal and not let the pad effect your movement.

The POC Joint Knee Pads offer excellent support. One of mine is in great condition as it is not worn, but at the moment I am having some discomfort in my right knee, so that one has had plenty of use recently. These pads do show wear quite easily, but they will last for a few years if taken care of. If you wear them under clothes then they will be further protected from the elements, but if you do get sweaty with them on (and you will!) then they will need to be washed and this can affect their elasticity.

I think that considering their cost you could buy alternative models which would be better made, but this is far from a poor quality product. I have a friend that has a set of Kevlar pads which are very hard wearing. They are not anywhere near as lightweight or slim as these, but they will last forever! These pads are what they are, and to be honest the support they offer is great. I think that if you are looking for some support for reassurance then these pads could be just what you need. If you don’t want to shop around and experiment then you cannot go wrong with these pads.

The pad grips reasonably well at the bottom edge and are slid up from your foot. You then tighten the Velcro strap reasonably well so that the pad doesn’t slip down as you are running. There is a rubber tab on the end of the strap to give you quick access to undoing it. These pads are available in small, medium and large.

Price and availability

These POC branded knee pads are certainly not cheap. Priced up at around the £60 mark I think a lot of people will be put off by the price and buy cheaper but less supportive alternatives. Shopping online is wise for this type of item.

Final thoughts

The POC branded VPD Knee Pads are very well designed but do have durability issues, especially if you do a lot of your activities in terrain that would mean you have to wash them regularly. The elasticated pads are generously padded whilst remaining lightweight. Overall I would have to award four out of five stars based on their effectiveness to support my vulnerable knee.
