I had heard stories about sky plus boxes giving lots of problems and was reluctant to buy one but my son bought one for his own use.
This model actually has a 160gig Hard Drive but only 80gig can be used for recording sky.
I would imagine the other 80gig could be used for personal storage, although I am not technically qualified to confirm this.
It was so easy to use and had so many functions I got rid of my old setup box and bought one for myself.
I would advise anyone thinking of purchasing one of these boxes to buy from a dealer and not sky.
Sky would only sell me one if I used their installers. Their installers do the cheapest and easiest form of installation so we bought our own boxes and installed them ourselves.
When I wanted to record a programme in the past using my VCR it was a matter of finding a blank tape or rewinding a tape that was already in the machine and by the time I got things set up I usually missed the beginning of what I wanted to record. I usually couldn't be bothered with the hassle and only used VCR if I was going out or going on holiday.

Another great feature is the pause button where you can pause live television, eg should the phone ring or you want to make a cup of tea, and pick up where you left off.
Recording your favourite series or soaps is not problem either as you can set it to record a whole series.
Ofcourse one big advantage is being able to watch one programme while recording another or recording two programmes and watch terrestrial TV through aeriel.

Advantages: Quick to respond, almost silent, fantastic customer services Disadvantages: None whatsoever
...Pace.
I have had Pace Sky boxes since Sky first started way back and i can say that they are THE BEST. The box is super quick at changing channels as well as looking around the EPG. My amstrad was very slow at doing this. I also have a much better signal strength with my Pace compared to the Amstrad. It is a great box that i will probably have for a long time.
I went for a Pace as my Amstrad was useless and so noisy. and the Sky engineer told me ... ...moment, so i went for Pace on his advice aswell as my own opinion.
This is a fantastic super quick, silent, reliable box, which is backed up by the fantastic customer services from Pace's website. If you want a box go for Pace and it will last you the longest out of all the brands! ...

Advantages: Nice design Disadvantages: Loud hard drive, can be heard over tv
I went for a Pace because I had read some good reviews, and that they were more reliable than the Amstrad boxes you get from Sky, hence I went through a private dealer.
The box is nice in design and the software seems robust enough, had a few failed recordings but I guess this is normal from time to time.
I am not impressed with the level of noise being emitted from the box itself, I read that these were the quieter ones as well! I am now on my ... ...querying this, I got quite a rude one back which did not answer my question. I even went out and bought a cabinet but that did not even shut the box up! It is the hard discs you can hear, a constant whirring sound which is almost high pitch and very annoying, I expected some degree of noise but this can be heard over the TV. ...
