... Packaging technology is now advanced enough to give us boxes that are air-tight and tamper evident, so the bag is only there because we expect it to be there.
For the record, my company manufactures a re-sealable system for sack and bag packaging, which can reduce waste by up to 75%.

However, to help this situation maybe we should go the path of the Germans who have a Gruner Punkt (green point) declaration on their packaging, this illustrates that the packaging, if not totally bio-degradable, does correspond within certain environmental guidelines to lessen the effect on the environment.

Look in any landfill site and the paper there must be enough paper in there to have come from 2 or 3 Brazillian rainforests. Through our consumer demands we expect and require our goods to be packaged way over the top, resulting in a huge amount of waste which accounts not only for a huge number of us to become increasingly worried about the Environment but also for rising prices in consumer goods.
Take Cigarettes for example, although I'm a non smoker I am fully aware of the implications of cigarettes. I'm not damning any smokers out there, that's not what this is about, what I am damning is the cigarette manufacturers. First off a ciggie packet is wrapped in plastic, after the plastic has been pulled off and thrown on the floor the box is opened and the smoker is confronted by a slip of gold or silver paper. They pull that out and throw that on the floor and then also chuck away the points card. Pull out the ciggie - smoke it and then throw the stub on the floor. They do this twenty times and then throw the packet on the floor. I'm not saying every smoker does this, but a huge proportion do. Cigarettes are hugely overpackaged, WHY?? It's because we expect them to be.
A wine connosseur (sp) once told me that corking a bottle of wine makes absolutely no difference to the taste of the wine inside, it's just that consumers expect a quality bottle of wine to be corked.
The same thing with cigarettes, or washing powder, or mayonnaise - we all expect certain products to be packaged a certain way. This means that when new products are launched into a market place the packaging has to be seen not only to conform to the "norms" of that particular market, but also it has to try and establish itself - so packaging companies come up with new and devilish designs, which generally constitute more raw materials leading to higher product costs and more waste.
DVD's to me also seem overpackaged. I know the cases are the way they are to differentiate them from CD's, however, is there really any need for them to be twice the size of CD cases?
It is an escalating problem that can be seen on many goods, and the impact is not only environmental but also helps us to live in "Rip Off Britain".
Stricter waste management laws are underway from Europe, and the preference for bio-degradable packaging is increasing. However, to help this situation maybe we should go the path of the Germans who have a Gruner Punkt (green point) declaration on their packaging, this illustrates that the packaging, if not totally bio-degradable, does correspond within certain environmental guidelines to lessen the effect on the environment.

We need a stronger voice as a consumer, and we need to be able to demand that manufacturers give us enough packaging to do the job, and not just give us more to make us satisfied.
Advantages: keeps food fresh and allows for product differentiation Disadvantages: Killing our planet slowly but surely!
...the issue of packaging.
Packaging is a problem that plagues us all. I won't mention the brand name but a well-known chocolate biscuit brand (having the same name as a flight-less sea bird - I'm sure you know which one!) used to (I stopped buying because of this fact so I am unsure if it still does!) produce a double pack. It placed two single packets of biscuits individually wrapped inside an outer wrapping. What a waste! Why not strap two individual ... ...outer-wrapping? I don't think the packaging was even recyclable either! So a double thumbs down for this company!
Some of you might be thinking "so what" its just some plastic wrapping. Well, if you multiply that by the millions of sheets unnecessarily wasted in the manufacturing process this becomes more of an issue! There links with some plastics (no longer referring to any brand now for fear of legal action!) that are linked with the lowering ...

Advantages: May help in the short-term Disadvantages: Very expensive
This is a very expensive package. It may help children with some difficulties, but with hindsight it would have been better using a tutor.
I have spent £1,600 on this package - which I am paying off over a 3 year period. I was unfortunate to lose one disc and contacted them asking for a replacement.
I contacted the Student Support Centre to explain that I had lost a disc and was not in a financial position to purchase another disc. They insisted that the best they could to for me was charge me £60 for the replacement.
I feel completely robbed. Having spent £1,600 on material from the Student Support Centre we cannot use the package now and their Cusomter Services gave the attitude that they simply didn't care and it was tough luck.
My advice is DO NOT USE THE STUDENT SUPPORT CENTRE. Get a Tutor (to assist ...
Advantages: Excellent career prospects if willing to work hard Disadvantages: Working with some so called experts from other supermarkets
I have been working for Morrisons for five weeks at the ill fated Dundee Store (opening postponed). The training and general communication has been excellent. In what has been a very unusual period for all of us the management have bent over backwards to try and motivate the staff who have had to be shipped out to other stores to work. I have worked for many large employers over the years and Morrisons is by far the most employee centered company I have worked for. We have been kept fully informed and have been given a very attractive package to encourage us to stay on in a shop that is not even open and now has no fixed opening date. I think Morrisons has had some bad press in the past but is now a very good company to work for. ...
