...After a succession of 'built to order' and home built machines of varying reliability, we decided to buy one off the shelf. The main argument being that it would be factory assembled, with greater Quality control than the smaller 'build to order' companies could manage.
After trailing round PC world, Comet, Dixon's etc, we finally settled on a n iXtreme with the following spec:
Intel P4 2.5Ghz, 256Mb PC2100 ram, 80GB Maxtor Hard Disk, DVD, CDRW & Floppy drives small powered speakers (2) keyboard with cd & web buttons and a basic wheel mouse. and a 15" TFT screen. Good value at £739.

Advantages: separate CDRW and DVD drives, P4, easy set-up Disadvantages: Problems with DVD and CDRW drives (drivers etc)
...I recently bought an imedia 5109.
In short, I wish I had waited for the extra couple of weeks to spend a little extra money on two important areas:
1: I have a 1.9 GHz P4 .... 2.5 GHz or more would have been nice.
2: Other PB computers imcliude Geforce 4 graphics cards - well worth the extra coupla quid!!
Finally I have had problems with the DVD drive and CDRW but updating my drivers online fixed most things.
Other than that I have had no problems. I would not hessitate to reccommend PackardBell - but I would say this: spend as much as you can afford - you'll be glad in the long run!!
Better value than Dell - Not as good value as Emachines.
PACKARDBELL - A POOR MANS DELL....

Advantages: Good battery life Disadvantages: None yet.
...I have had this laptop for over 2 years now without anything needing to be replaced. The battery life of 4-5 hours is great in a laptop as well. Also, Windows XP will run smoothly on this laptop. I doubt that it will be able to support Windows Vista, but I will try. I mostly use my laptop for school and is perfect for home use. This would make for the perfect investment for your childern or yourself, as it is inexpensive and durable. My mother bought the same laptop when I did and her's still works as well. Compaq has a wealth of troubleshooting and driver downloads available on their website. I will continue to buy compaq in the future....

I've recently been able to test this laptop as my stepdad has received one through his work. It's the first time I have seen an HP/Compaq laptop, but I've used many other brands so I'll be mainly using them as a comparison.
At first glance, the laptop more
