Paco Rabanne have a knack for making fragrances for manly men. By which, I mean the kind of stuff found in the cabinet of a man with a lot of chest hair. And lots of scotch. However, Ultraviolet is more for the modern day man. The box is a trendy blue to purple fade with snazzy silvery writing on it. The bottle itself is unique, with a squeezy bit on the side, spraying your chosen smell out of a little nozzle just about the trigger. Prices range from about £25 for 50ml, to £35 for 100ml, which is fairly decent pricing.
The smell...well, I'm limited in my similies (how does something smell "woody"?). The best description I can come up with is manly lavender. It is a deeper smell, in that it will cling to you and stay there for a while without fading. This can be a problem if you tend to sweat, as the smell can go a little stale after a while. Because of this, it is probably best suited to wearing out for an evening. An evening out somehwere chilly. Potential buyers may like to know that this fragrance does get attention. I have 25 different fragrances, and while thi sisn't my favourite, it is the one that gets most people telling me I smell good. Whoo...
So, onto my gripes. Well, there is the aforementioned potential staleness of it, and the design of the bottle. See the picture at the top? Imagine it upside down. It looks the same, doesn't it? This can be a problem. Let me explain why.
One night a few years ago, I was set to go out. I had been staying with a friend and so all my things were in my trusty backpack. I decided to pop on a bandana to go out, and was presented with a problem. My bandana had been nestled in with some rather pungent socks, and so smelt like the arse of satan himself. Being too lazy to do my hair, I whipped out my trusty Ultraviolet and aimed to spray the bandana with it. Problem is, it was upside down. Cue a fresh, violety squirt of aftershave directly into my eyeballs. As you may imagine, this hurts. I may have had the nicest smelling peepers in the world, but I was pretty much blinded for 2 hours.
Now I understand this was stupid of me. Stupid on a level that normally would require life support. But it is worth bearing in mind if you've had a few too many and you want to freshen up.
So there we have it - a manly, well priced, lovely smelling aftershave that could prove lethal in the hands of an imbecile.
