Advantages Advantages Slim, large screen, portable, sexy, like a super model turned into a PDA

Disadvantages Disadvantages Battery life, ugly interface, sounds like a dying giraffe sometimes

Prologue: I need a PDA. A lovely Personal Digital Assistant to help me sort out my day. No I don't mean some virtual reality 3D hologram of a fine female secretary (although that would be nice *hint hint*), but one of those pocket sized little buggers that can be carried around and used to sort out all your stuff for you, no paper involved. So I left my love nest and made my way to the local retail park. When you buy this device, do not let the sales person intimidate you into taking out a '5 year protection insurance scheme' if you do not want to take one out. The guy who served me kept ... more

Many of you may be wondering what a PDA actually is. Well, the best description I can come up with is that it is a 21st century filofax. However, its functions go far beyond anything a filofax could ever conjure. I received this particular PDA, PALM Tungsten E, as a birthday present. To be honest, I had very little clue as to what they could do but the more I have used mine over the last week, the more useful it has become. I believe it will be of even greater use next year when I go to university. This model is actually a very good one in the sense that it offers a lot of the same features as ... more

Advantages Advantages Screen good in all light, Lightning Fast, Works with Outlook and Office apps, Palm Reader makes ebooks very easy to read, can fit a huge ammount of information in 32Mb

Disadvantages Disadvantages The lack of a cradle and case are the only cons, but at this price you can't complain too much.

I purchased my Tungsten E online from comet, i paid £138 inc delivery, the best price on the web. (Dec 2003) When it arrived i charged it for 3 hours then installed the apps from the install CD, this took about 1 hour and was fairly easy, for Outlook 2003 users you need to download a patch for the Outlook conduit software, the Java runtime too was downloaded from the net, so an internet cnx is definately required at install time. The palm comes with the core apps (contacts, calander, tasks, notes, expenses etc) pre loaded and the additional apps (documents to go, acrobat reader, mobile db ... more

There used to be a saying in systems design circles... "choose your software first and then the hardware that runs it". It still holds true and the existing software for Palm based PDA's means there are plenty of uses for this device. Musicians and retro computer fanatics may be interested in psytexx tracker, similar to the old Amiga & ST style step-time sequencers. Media fans might find the Kinoma mobile video player and Realmedia's Realone player for palm allow them to play audio & video files anywhere (although most files need to be converted into Palms native .pdb format to be played) ... more
