Advantages:
Screen good in all light, Lightning Fast, Works with Outlook and Office apps, Palm Reader makes ebooks very easy to read, can fit a huge ammount of information in 32Mb
Disadvantages:
The lack of a cradle and case are the only cons, but at this price you can't complain too much .
I purchased my Tungsten E online from comet, i paid £138 inc delivery, the best price on the web. (Dec 2003)
When it arrived i charged it for 3 hours then installed the apps from the install CD, this took about 1 hour and was fairly easy, for Outlook 2003 users you need to download a patch for the Outlook conduit software, the Java runtime too was downloaded from the net, so an internet cnx is definately required at install time.
The palm comes with the core apps (contacts, calander, tasks, notes, expenses etc) pre loaded and the additional apps (documents to go, acrobat reader, mobile db, media player, real one etc) are installed from CD, you can install the apps you need and maximise the storage space for your data by not installing uneeded apps.
The included apps do most things i need, i have downloaded quite a few freeware palm apps (found in google) that i have installed (games, astronomy, travel dictionary etc) these have added greatly to the enjoyment of my PDA.
The main reason i purchased my Palm is to be able to carry around technical information for my job, (i have a pretty good memory but a massive ammount of info to remember) the palm does this with great ease.
The best feature for me is the search, i put all my technical info into mobile db format and when i search for a command or value the search result diaplays right down to the Db cell , this means i can find my info without having to remember where i put it !
To say the palm is economical with memory is an understatement, With a good few apps installed i had about 20Mb of memory left, this does not sound a lot but it goes a very long way, it's suprising how much stuff can be packed into the standard ram !
I have just ordered a 128Mb sdram card from ebuyer (approx £30) this is so i can put my MP3 music files on to it for listening to music on the train. (it will only play mp3 files from extension memory) I am going to use 64mb for music and 64mb for files and pictures, i was going to buy a 256Mb card originally but after using my palm for 3 weeks i don't think i will ever need that ammount of storage !
Battery life is good, approx 8 hours of use is the average with the low screen brightness i use, (low is all you need for the uk in January, maybee in summer you need to use a higher brightness so it may not last as long in summer or in sunny countries !)
Overall i can not think of any thing more that i need in a PDA, it great to be more organised with a mobile calender, it good to have all my contacts at hand (easier and more detailed than using my mobile address book) and it's great to have all my technical information at hand and available at the press of a button, the speed of the palm is instant, you press the on button and it's instantly working, the size and weight are great, you can tuck it into a shirt pocket and whip it out in an instant. The build is very sturdy and it's got a nice silver finish. For me it scores over a pocket pc with battery life, weight, size and cost, the size and weight were more important than the extra functions that a pocket pc could offer at over twice the price (bluetooth, wireless lan etc)
The Palm Toungsten E is a great PDA at any price, but at this price it can not be beaten by anything, unless you need an app that on runs on windows pocket os or you need bluetooth / wireless connectivity then this PDA is for you.
