If you had asked me 6 months ago, I would have said buy a palmtop/handheld with Windows CE on it. After all, what better than being able to enter data in Pocket Word/Excel/Whatever, and being able to do it in a similar way to Windows 9x. However, that was when I totally missed the point of the Palm OS. It isn't a replacement for a desktop, it's a PDA in it's own right. Basically, it has every feature you are likely to need in a mobile environment; notepad, telephone book, diary, calculator and email synchronisation, and, even better, with the plethora of software that is available (shareware, freeware and the odd commercial title), you can view Word ane Excel documents, create a database, play games (everything from a Doom clone to Sim City), view websites offline, read books and much more. Memory was a concern for me, I couldn't visualise, being a Windows user, how you could possibly do all these things in 2MB. But, you can, incredibly well. Obviously, programs take up memory, so you can't just install everything all at once, the inbuilt apps cannot be removed and additional applications range from a few kb to over half a megabyte, depending on what they are. It is easy to use, what with the touch screen. Inputting data can be a bind at first, it uses the Graffiti language, which can take a few hours to get used to, but once you do get used to it, it's just as quick as writing the information, or typing it (which, if u prefer, can be achieved by either an add-on keyboard (which makes it all too bulky) or the virtual keyboard that is built into the OS (accessed by tapping the Graffiti pad)). The case is quite robust too, incorporating a flip-over hard case cover, to protect the screen. The whole unit fits incredibly well in even the smallest hand, and will slip into your shirt pocket without a problem. The backlight is incredibly pleasing, making it easy to read the screen in dark conditions, though it does drain a lot of battery power. The only disadvantage to the backlight is that it covers the screen only, which would, in effect, leave the data entry area in the dark. It runs of two AAA batteries, giving you the charge information on the main application launcher screen. Built in IR means you can transfer data, and programs, to other Palm OS users. The unit synchronises with the PC via the Hotsync cradle and software and is one of the easiest setups I have seen in some time. All in all, one damned attractive piece of kit

Advantages: Size and features Disadvantages: lack of MS compatability
...years ago and joined the Palm revolution. I had been using a DayTimer paper system - backed-up by DayTimer software. I thought that as long as I could print my address book / calendar / etc. that I would be fine. I soon found that carrying a large organiser became combersome. I was travelling through Heathrow and saw a great deal on the Palm, so I finally bought one.
I quickly exported my DayTimer data to MS Outlook and began synching my Palm. Since ... ...of colour screen on the Palm III is a disadvantage, but for my use it has been fine.
The only thing I miss, is the ability to use it for MS Excel and MS Word, but then again, the documents that I tend to work on would not fit on the Palm anyway.
I have now had this Palm for almost 2 years and it is still running fine. I can't count the number of times I have dropped it and it just keeps working. ...

Advantages: Earns you money and can still be sold at a very high price! Disadvantages: Bit old now-a-days
...after 2 years that the Palm Pilot III can still earn you money just by using it. I recently found a programme which will let you make money from your palm. The site which lets you do this is currently down, but you will need the internet plug-in for the Palm III. It is much like the vice-versa of Goto.com search engine in which you get paid for visiting other sites and staying there for a certain time.
I recently got a check from the site at $75.43 ... ...also amazed to see that Palm III's can be sold for such a high price!
I was looking in the local paper today, and noticed that Palm III's were being sold for around £75, even though there is now a Palm Vx! I have now sold my Palm III though, at a pretty amazing price of £110, but mainly due to the fact that I had a much modified varient of the Palm III, which I liked to call the Palm III v1.2
Maybe I'll get another Palm someday! ...

THe palm III itself does not really amaze - it is a very good organiser etc., but the Graffiti system of writing is a bit slow - a keyboard would be better...

Advantages: Great layout, comfortable and easy to use. Disadvantages: Confusing marketing, crappy D-pad. (wires)
selecting things in game. Above the D-pad you have the back, start and Xbox Guide button, the back button usually isn't used much in gameplay merely to, as its name suggests, go back in the menus. The start button is usually used to pause the game. The Xbox Guide button is used to bring up the Xbox dashboard anytime so you can access your friends list, custom soundtracks, profile settings etc. Finally to the top right of the pad we have the four coloured face buttons A, B, X and Y these are your main action buttons which you will no doubt mash in your gaming sessions. The layout of the controller is very natural and as a result the pad fits very comfortably into your hands.

Advantages: Great colour and comparative value for money. Rechargeable battery a big plus. Disadvantages: Slightly bulkier than average PDA's
The Palm IIIc handheld PDA is a great help for an experienced Palmer.
First off, if you must have color this is a must have for you because the color is crisp and clear.
If you would like a good audio, music, sound this is probably not for you because of the high peak of the volume, very low, would be too quiet to hear in a croud of people or any place where it is noisy.
If you are a first user I would suggest the Palm X, Palm IIIe they are cheap and work great!
I found the unit to have excellent contrast and display. Once you are used to colour - it is difficult to go back to monochromatic displays.
This is the color version of the Palm3 and looks better and clearer for it. Memory is not upgradable and 8mb is not a huge amount. I have 3mb left and starting to worry. Bad mistake but I will cope ...

Advantages: Good value for money Disadvantages: a lot of hotsync and infrared issues
I have been a PalmIII owner for 2 years until I finally damaged it beyond repair. Being entirely dependent on my PDA I quickly rushed out and bought a replacement. Based on some good feedback I decided to purchase a Handspring Visor Deluxe. It had more memory than may PalmIII (8mb versus 2MB) and was slightly better value for money than the 8mb Palm devices. Plus the device comes in a number of colours ? yes I?m that fickle!
Aside from the extra memory and the more modern design, the handspring can accept what are called ?Springboard? modules. This means you can slot in accessories such as digital cameras, MP3 players, GSM modems, games, or even more memory ? fantastic. Nevertheless I?m pretty sure you can get similar accessories for the Palm models.
The device seems a little larger than the usual Palm and the case, while ...
You've seen them all around you. The Palm III from 3Com is the organizer that's the size of a deck of cards and small enough to fit into your shirt pocket. Stop struggling to find your datebook each time you need to note an important meeting. With a Palm III you'll have already entered that meeting information and be ready for more. And its 'datebook' has a built-in alarm to remind you of that meeting, so you can focus your attention on the more important matters at hand. The Palm III stores thousands of addresses, to do's, schedules, and personal notes. It stores thousands more items than the Pilot Professional. And the Palm III supports email with its optional Pilot modem, as well as infrared wireless data communication. Imagine keeping up with your e-mail by carrying something the size of a deck of cards! You can keep up with your life without having to carrying a fifty-pound day planner. Unlike most personal organizers, the Palm III comes with a cradle that allows you to seamlessly synchronize your data between the Palm III and your PC. So you can update your PIM software on your PC -push a button- and you and your Palm III are ready to go. Entering information on the road is simple. Write in the information with the stylus on Palm III's award winning Graffiti software or use the on-screen keyboard. One of the disadvantages of earlier PDA's was that you spend weeks entering data, then the batteries fail and you lose everything. By synchronizing the Palm III with your desktop you create a permanent backup. So, no matter what happens to the PDA, your information is always safe. The Palm III has a backlit screen, so you can read and enter information anywhere- in a dark car, a conference room or a restaurant. When you discover how incredibly useful the Palm III is, you consult it frequently.
