A keyboard? Keyboards are for wimps- the tough guys use a touch screen that understands handwriting. This handwriting recognition is called "graffiti" and reads letters you "paint" on the screen. It really works! If you want to, you can also use a virtual keyboard- but this keyboard covers most of your app and is very slow in use. You better really learn graffiti.
Why do I have it? Well, to be honest, I am anything but organized. Usually my girlfriend can tell me, where some stuf of mine is hidden before I find it, and usually I had to write down adresses about three times before I could use them; depending on which of my adress books I had with me.
So my boss came up to me and showed me his PALM the first time. I was about the same impressed as a citizen of Lonodn is about the Tower Bridge. The second and third time he showed it I ignored, but somewhen, somewhere between the late 300 and the early 400 I surrendered: I got one at ebay. It cost me a little more than 500 deutschmarks; it was before the euro. "What- (about 170 pounds) for that little thing? But it's only got 8 megs! WHY IS IT SO EXPENSIVE? Any CE-powered bucket has at least double the memory!" I think- that is not the right question; the question should be: Why does it need only 8 megs? Quite simple: no sound, no video, sorry, no MP3. What do you need that for? What I wanted to have is something to *work* with (yes, of course you can play games with it, too). And for that job the palm has more than enough memory. And Palm OS compared to WIN CE concerning the resource-requirements is pretty thin. THAT'S WHY! Even the display sucks a lot of power, I can use that thing for about half a week without recharging it.
"Uh-hu- and what can you do with it?" my dad asked me. Well, my dad: anything with less than at least 250 moveable parts is some sort of suspicious to him, he still wants to live in a time, when rubber-boots were made of wood. Anyway, I had to tell him the truth: scheduling appointments, dates, meetings, write memos to me, organize to-dos, well- (I better not did mention the games shipped with the device, and by the way: they are shitty- b/w) "And that's all? Uh-hu." End of message.
Well- no. That's not all you can do with it. This little thing runs under Palm OS 3.5.x (the last recent one is 3.5.3, I think), and therefore you can find plenty of good (and sometime free) software in the web (sites like tucows.com or palmgear.com have a lot of pretty good stuff). Here's a list of my favoured- just to show you the versality of that little computer:
- First of all: jPilot. THis fine piece of soft makes your palm communicate with linux, so you can close your windows.
- For owners of SIEMENS-cellphones a tool named "S25-util" is very helpful: you can beam logos and sounds via infrared port from your PALM to the cellphone- totally free. Even if you don't like the ones shipped with the software, you can create your own logo or sound and convert it with a little tool (also included) into the PALM-format; I did one "HANDS OFF!!" Very imoressive. Really great software- and free. You can also find software that works with NOKIA-phones, but those usually have to be purchased.
- "Netzmonitor" This software, that allows the palm to calculate your position by querying the GSM-transceivers that the connected phone is currently booked in. Something like GPS for deprived cellphoners. Perhaps it even works in the UK (I only tried it in germany)
- IR-monitor: check IR-remote-controls.
- OmniRemote: Use your palm as a programmable remote control! This one is really useful- but not free. Too bad it deactivates itself after a short trial-period.
- HanDbase: a database application, very intuitive and easy UI, plus the possibility to password-protect your data. I do so with my banking-account-numbers and pins.
- Abacus: an Excel-like worksheet-applikation. A lot of functions, but very slow. Still in beta-state, but usable- and free.
- Entertainment? Yes! My favored is "HotPipes": Put as many tubes together in a matrix before you un out of time.
- Ace: Anyone who knows "Super Dogfight" from the Commodore C64? Anyone? No? Too bad. Well, two planes, each equipped with a machine gun, (up to) two players. I just swept my boss from the sky. Great.
- Galax: A pretty good GALAGA-clone: the aliens are on the top of the screen, the gun on bootom is yours, and did I mention shoot? No? Shoot.
- And a pretty good FROGGER-clone.
As you can see, that little useful thing can help you in a lot aspects of your life: As a personal database and organizer (which is supposed to be generic use of those devices), as an alarm (I define them as alarms, is more comfortable than programming the cellular und turn it off on saturdays when you want to stay in bed longer..), as gameboy-substitute, for example during endless hours of waiting in frustatingly long lasting jams, even as a flashlight: it shines far brighter than those tiny lamps in some carkeys, and even brighter than an active cellphone. ... There are just few things that you cannot use this little companion for: lighting cigarettes (I'm a non-smoker), finding park- (oh, I already mentioned this? OK), and of course opening bootles w/o a "twist to open"-cap (Ever seen a blonde dancing around to have beer? That's why.)
Advantages: Size, Weight, Applications Disadvantages: Memory could be a bit larger...
The Palm IIIc is a great PDA for the average businessman. It is small, secure, and can do just about anything that you want it to. Enough said though, let me get into the ’’good stuff.’’
Size and Weight
The Palm IIIc is incredibly small and weighs in at nearly nothing. If you really are not impressed with the size of this PDA, then you really won’t be impressed by any of them because virtually every PDA is the same ... ...edit what is on your palm pilot on your computer (be it a desktop or a laptop). You connect your computer to your palm pilot via a little cable and plugs into a port in the back, and then your palm pilot just rests in a little cradle. It works really great and is extremely convinient. One thing that the Palm IIIc allows is that you can drag different things from your Palm IIIc to either a MS Word or MS Excel document. This works really well for notes ...

Advantages: Great colour and comparative value for money. Rechargeable battery a big plus. Disadvantages: Slightly bulkier than average PDA's
The Palm IIIc handheld PDA is a great help for an experienced Palmer. First off, if you must have color this is a must have for you because the color is crisp and clear. If you would like a good audio, music, sound this is probably not for you because of the high peak of the volume, very low, would be too quiet to hear in a croud of people or any place where it is noisy. If you are a first user I would suggest the Palm X, Palm IIIe they are cheap ... ...it is difficult to go back to monochromatic displays.
This is the color version of the Palm 3 and looks better and clearer for it. Memory is not upgradable and 8mb is not a huge amount. I have 3mb left and starting to worry. Bad mistake but I will cope ...

Advantages: Easy to use OS, clear colour display Disadvantages: Not enough memory
...bit hesitant about my new Palm IIIc. However, from the moment I turned it on I was hooked. The screen size is big enough to make everything clear, but not so big to make it unwieldy, and the day to day driving of the OS is so quick and easy that I was amazed. I know people have complained about the accuracy of the Graffiti text input system, but I've never had a problem with it, and there is a seperate folding keyboard available for those novelists ... ...also pleasantly surprised at how well my Palm IIIc got on with Windows 98, as I have again, had no problems.
There are HUGE amount of software available for download, much of it free, so it has been simple and cost effective to customise my Palm for my needs. ...
Advantages: Colour brings everything to life Disadvantages: cost, no proper sound
I was given the Palm IIIc as a gift, and was a bit sceptical at first. But after a couple of months with it, I'm a convert.
It's screen is very contrasty in all lighting conditions, and it's only a bit heavier than the IIIx series. Syncing to the PC goes very smoothly and quickly. Recharging the battery is easy while you are hot-syncing, and battery life seems to be good.
The software support for the IIIc is massive (it runs all Palm s/w) and one ... ...your favourite web-channels when you hot-sync. I use this to get share info and news from Yahoo just before I leave work, which I can then read on the train on the way home. Some of the games you can download are really fun: Pacman and Galaxian look just like the old arcade games. I also use Albumtogo to display digital snaps - quite a 21st Century way of carrying your family photos around!
It costs a bit more than some of the others, but I think ...

Advantages: Very cool and sexy! Disadvantages: Noticeably slow (though perhaps only if you've used another PDA)
The thing they don't point out on the box (or the website) about colour handhelds - and this counts as much for other products as for this one - is that 8 times the number of colours means 8 times the amount of memory used to render the picture, and what that means is that the colour handhelds are MUCH slower than other ones, and if you've used a black and white one you'll soon notice the difference, which you won't be pleased with. Otherwise this ...

Advantages: Better screen display, smart cradle Disadvantages: Expensive, heavy ,thick.
The Visor Prism is Handspring's attempt to emulate the success its principal competitor, Palm Computing, has achieved with PalmIIIc. The latest version of the Palm operating system, version 3.5, adds colour support for the first time. But as Handspring is only a licensee of the software, it has taken the company six months to come up with a colour product of their own.
The Prism has a number of benefits over the PalmIIIc. The screen can display 65,000 colours, as apposed to the Palm's 256. It includes additional software, such as Datebook, City Time and an enhanced calculator. It has a built-in microphone and contains a Springboard expansion slot, which can accommodate a range from digital camara adapters and MP3 players, to games and coming soon, a mobile phone adapter.
It's cradle connects to a PC via USB - Palm users have to ...
Advantages: size and screen Disadvantages: weak battery
I purchased the Tungsten T after my wife stole my new Zire 71 from me. I really didn't care for the camera feature, but she loves it. So, I went with the T because of its size and I have not been disappointed at all. Previously, I owned the PalmIIIc. This is such a better unit. The 5-way nav is very usefull. I installed 2 utility programs, Slidefree and Graffiti Anywhere, and now I no longer need to slide the unit open to have full access to all the functions. The hotsync is so much faster due to the USB connection, as opposed to the former/older serial connection. Programs run faster. The unit is just more responsive in everything it does. Games look better, thus more fun. Readers look better, i.e. easier to read and less eye strain. Even the clock looks better. This is a great Palm. Other from this i would recoment the Zire 71 ...
Advantages: Screen, Fast USB Sync, Springboard slot Disadvantages: Speed, non-upgradeable OS
The Visor Prism is Handspring's first colour palm device. It's 16-bit (65536 colour) display is the most vibrant I have ever seen on a PalmOS based device. It's far superior to the 256 colour display of the PalmIIIc, and much brighter than the new Palm m505. However, it's the machine's only real saving grace.
The unit is very chunky (fatter even than my TRGpro), and comes in a purple case that I'm sure won't be to everyone's taste. It runs the same CPU as the Visor Platinum, but also suffers horribly from the inherent sluggishness of PalmOS 3.5. You're stuck with OS 3.5, too, because the Prism, like all Handspring Visors, lacks a flashable ROM.
On the positive side, it does have the Springboard slot (see my Visor Deluxe review for more on that), it synchronises with your PC via USB (rather than serial, like all but the most recent ...
