To occupy in full with it as a tall technology friend but with little time around me, I want to come in IIIx that I now already have almost for a long time a half year today briefly onto the Palm. Unity now and then at the beginning: I come too now, in terms of this long time, for the result, that it can nevertheless be the Palm IIIx Organizer useful, however in no case as importantly as my PERSONAL COMPUTER is, or is of Handy!
With a format of 8x12 cm, Palm III. Organizer is a very practical device. It fits ideally into the palm of the hand or into the pocket or the file suitcase. He functions with two batteries alkaline AAA, has a fencing under that itself the screen is. A quite big screen (6x6 cm), under it a small face with four illustrations and the so-called graffiti face and included 6 press buttons for the most important functions of Palm III. (included the green button for switching on and off of the device). 3Com which developed the Palm III also thought of the important light function so that one has no problems too in darkening. An a little longer pressing onto the green ON/OFF switch brings a pleasant green light into the screen. I can not yet answer whether however the batteries will hold for a long time with this function and this screen size, I do not instead own the device for a long time enough! Is replaced they are accustomed the mouse, that we from the PERSONAL COMPUTER, from a pen that is in the rear part of Palm III.!
How can one now use the Palm III? Where is he useful? It gives some fields with which he a good partner can be. For example, Theo has an important interview exact at 15.00 o'clock today. However he first still has a rendezvous by chance with its girlfriend (do I have one at all?). I do in no case want to however miss the interview! Therefore, I go into my Organizer among the category „Kalender" and the time into that I must make myself onto the way, go into the category details, insert alarm and already can finish I again in rest every other. The Organizer then informs me at adjusted time and nothing can go wrong! By the way can one such important dates first also program months (even years!)! That was one of the useful qualities of Palm III. However there is so much more: I would like to e.g. know how many money I lost at the purse today. One goes for the category „Rechner" and can enter the decisive numbers here! Or one would like to store an important telephone number or postal address of a new acquaintance. Where do I now find pen and note? Nowhere! However no problem, Palm III. is instead nevertheless Organizer there and also has on its own metal pen with that one on the screen can note! Store simply all important data among „Adressen". In this category as well as at the most ones can define one whether it is a question of a private or professional memo! Because one ought as it it is called so beautifully private and professional decollate! III also gives some other functions of the Palm to Organizers who however are already more complicated. One can combine him e.g. with a PERSONAL COMPUTER. That can happen either with an IR connection or can happen with a serial connection. One e.g. can then transmit e-mails on Palm writings and into the computer or also store it e-mails of the PERSONAL COMPUTER in Palm III.! For the functions other duzenden which I can not analyze ideally as a Nicht expert, one should visit the Internet postal address www.palm.com. One can bring DA even moreer via this device into experience!
The question which however I set up for myself, after I now took Organizer under the magnifier from the Palm III some months, is: Can my modern Handy not pass the water to this device? And the answer is clear and clear: It can! Because too on the Handy can one his dates may store and on it be referred (with the alarm for example), one can also store telephone numbers and postal addresses here, calculate also can one with it and entrance into the Internet and that e-mails also has one! I do not think final that the Palm III is the device of the future. It is indeed useful, however, can be replaced by a Handy easily! For this purpose, the price of the Palm is much too high (more than 600 DM) and also tempers as some of it from itself so a device to buy!
Advantages: Small, sufficient memory, easy to use, notepad, address book, calendar, reliable, durable, upgradeable, connection to PC easy to establish Disadvantages: lack of multidmedia features, limited document length
I have had the palm pilot for just under a year now. I had previously tried out one of the psion models and returned it after it stopped working for the nth time - I found it to be fairly unreliable. On the other hand the palm pilot is incredibly reliable, the only time it doesn't work is when the batteries run out! This model has 4Mb of memory which is more than enough. The calendar is very useful and runs on ad infinitum. The telephone/address book ... ...most useful aspect of the palm pilot. Whenever I attend lectures I am able to write just as fast as I would with a pen and paper. The trick is to use the digital keyboard display as the handwriting recognition is not good enough to be able to write at these speeds. Admittedly these are really the main features that I use and so a colour display is not very useful to me which makes the palm IIIx ideal. The serial cable allows you to connect it up ...
Advantages: Small, fully featured Disadvantages: an organiser, not a mobile PC
...More research revealed the palm pilot range but also showed the jump in cost - i decided not to bother. Would you believe the very next day i spotted a collegue with one, 10 minutes later i was sold. The graffiti hand writing recognition is so easy to learn that i was writing in sentances inside 5 minutes. It came with all the apps i needed, and i placed an order that afternoon for the palm IIIx (only the palm V was avaliable at the time, more money, ... ...the software avaliable for the palm (www.palmgear.com) and now have the thing nearly full of useful tools, apps, and games. I use it every day for things as simple as making appointments in my diary to getting phone number and read webpages that i have downloaded to my pilot every morning. Things have moved on now since i purchased my pilot and I think id opt for the palm Vx with 8mb and a slightly faster processor or possibly look at the IIIc with ...

The Palm 3x is great, as the cost is much less than any other PDA, especially the 5x. They are basiccally the same machine, but the 5X costs way more and is not worthe the extra, even if the screen is slightly better. It is easy to read in the dark with the backlight but you have to be careful not to damage it.
Apart from that, the actual design is great. It's a nice size to fit into the palm of your hand or trouser pocket. I would recommend it ...

3com's Palm 3x is great. The cost is brilliant compared with other organisers that are available and its a good offer compared with the 5x models. The cost is a lot less, but he loss in features isn't that great.
The design iss good, the size is perfect to fit into pockets or carry around and the battery life is reasonable. You will be need a few spares though. Software included is basic, but great, however the numebr of users of the Palm Pilots ...

Advantages: small, cheap, easy to use Disadvantages: small memory, not colour
...is powered by the fantastic Palm OS operating system, which enables it to run 1000's of programs. The 3x itself is around £250 - cheap for a PDA. It comes with built in software, although much more can be obtained free from palmgear.com. I would recomend this organiser to anyone who hasn't owned a PDA previously. To dedicated palm users i would however recomend my new organsier - the TRG Pro. The product was speedy and easy to use. The lack of color ... ...used up quickly when used for a while. Battery life is good, i would recomend using Duracells power series of batteries. Overall the palm is an excellent PDA, much better than the EPOC and Win CE devices, that could only be improved with color and better expansion space. ...

Advantages: 8Mb memory, inexpensive Disadvantages: looks like a Ford Capri
This finally weaned me off a paper filofax, and offers much much more.
You can't afford to be half hearted about committing to a PDA - it's all or nothing.
The PalmIIIxe is based on the older format connector, and as a result, accessories are more widely available on Ebay, and tend to attract lower prices.
The 8Mb of memory is a major selling point - so far I've not had any 'out of memory' problems.
The unit uses AAA cells, so if you find your batteries are running out, you can replace them after a visit to your local petrol station - you don't need to dock it with your host PC to get a charge.
I use mine mostly to keep a copy of my address book and electronic mail - that means I don't have to lug a laptop about.
I have also installed AvantGo - which downloads news and Internet pages, such as the BBC news, weather ...

Advantages: Good price, can do everything you want, 8MB memory is adequate Disadvantages: Design flaws, poor rechargeable battery life
I brought a Palm III xe from buy.com and together with a £30 off coupon received it for the very respectable price of £112 including VAT and free delivery. Its a great piece of kit, but I’ve come across some design flaws which are fairly annoying. Firstly, the hard case is a great idea, but the hinge is so flimsy it soon falls off and can’t be reattached. Secondly, the top left of the touch sensitive screen has developed an ‘oil patch’ where you can see the liquid used for touch sensitivity. Thankfully its still touch sensitive here, but in the wrong light conditions all you see is the rainbow colours reflecting off the oil. I’ve also noticed that although it runs off rechargeable batteries for a few hours (compared to days with non- rechargeable) it gives no warning of low battery life before suddenly ...

Advantages: extremely portable, 8MB storage capacity Disadvantages: not a flash looker!, can't recharge
Do you remember when mobile phones first started becoming popular? When the only people who could afford to buy these brick-like objects were businessmen with big cars to match their big phones. If you were anything like me your reaction to seeing these 'suits' on the street speaking into a mobile would have been 'Look at him, the show-off, aren't there enough phone boxes around?'.
Obviously since that time things have changed dramatically. Now I have about 15 phone numbers for my family even though there's only 5 of us! Mobile phones are for the masses and no longer mark you out as someone with higher earnings or a flash job (certain very expensive mobile phones excluded).
So, what has this to do with the PalmIIIxe? Well, in my opinion, Palms (and more likely, palm and mobile combi-products) will one day soon be as popular ...

The new Palm IIIx is one example that proves the sequel can be better than the original! A more advanced extension to the Palm III, the Palm IIIx provides twice the memory of the Palm III, includes an enhanced display, and delivers dozens of capabilities to make life easier! In a category of products where 2MB of memory is considered more than sufficient, the Palm IIIx offers a large 4MB capacity. This means you can instantly access and store up to 12,000 address, five years of appointments, 3,000 to-do items, 3,000 memos, 400 emails, and tons of applications! With the enhanced LCD screen on the new Palm IIIx organizer, you don't have to strain one bit to read this data you've stored. The advanced display technology improves viewing in dim or bright lighting conditions with its razor sharp picture. The serious road warrior considers fast and easy synchronization capabilities in their PDA, a must-have. The Palm IIIx builds on their synchronization technology of past Palms, to bring you the fastest synchronization yet. The HotSync cradle is your convenient means to quickly exchanging data between your PC and your Palm IIIx. The HotSync cradle also doubles as a battery charger! You may also choose to exchange data with other Palm devices using the infrared beam incorporated into the Palm organizers. You can exchange business cards, phone lists, memos, and even add-on applications through the IR port. You simply hold down a button and beam it over! You can even use third-party beaming applications to make use of IR phones and printers with your Palm IIIx! Even more expansion possibilities are available with the open connector slot that lets you easily add hardware components and customize your Palm IIIx. You will be able to add pagers (when available), and memory card upgrades for even more data storage. The Palm IIIx is Internet ready with TCP/IP software included to enable Internet based applications and email. All you need is the Palm Modem optional accessory (located in the Accessories link on this page), to take advantage of this valuable functionality. You'll be able to read and reply to emails remotely and exchange back-up data between your PC and your Palm IIIx. Small and powerful, the Palm IIIx lets you store, share, and access the critical bits of information you need daily. After you try it, you'll wonder how you go by for so long without the power of a Palm.
