Forget Lifeboat, Liferaft or even the mint with the hole in the middle, this device is truly a lifesaver. I used to have a Sharp electronic organiser - one of those you can pick up anywhere for about £20-£30. It had everything on it including passwords for my work, flight details, important telephone nos. of family and friends (and even nos. of those people whose details I didn’t want to see on my mobile phone – you know what I mean…those banished for a social misdemeanour :-)
Then disaster happened – my screen broke on the Electronic organiser and I was not able to see anything on it – save for e.g. a ‘t’ on the end of a word or a ‘0’ at the beginning of a no. I went to PC World, Dixons and even a second PC World branch (just to make sure) to see if they could retrieve the information. They said that they would have to send it away and the cost of retrieval will be about £70 and more.
So I started looking into the Palm pilots on the market. This of course after 2 years of thinking about it, thinking about whether I can justify the price and then thinking that palm pilots were only for snobs who wanted to show off on the train. I checked various websites including www.palm.com to see the range of devices they had. Then I came across a site called www.luzerntech.com. They’ve got a range of palms available including the M130.
Now the beauty about these palms is that you can buy them either (1) New or (2) Factory Renewed (3) Blemished and the price differs according to the one you buy. I got a factory renewed one. These are typically e.g. ones that are perhaps bought and returned to the manufacturer if a buyer didn’t like the features. I’m quite anal about details of devices that I need and do a lot of research on a pair of curtains if I need to. This was no different, I was looking for price, feel, whether there was a colour screen, and most importantly if I can save the details on my computer so that my information is safeguarded (say in the very almost impossible far fetched event that the screen broke..J.
This deal was good cus I was looking for size, screen colour and you can upload your data into a computer. Plus something fairly simple as I am not a techie person and didn’t want to overcomplicate things…gosh, I don’t even know all the features on my mobile phone. Ok so what else does it actually have - the hard facts are:
- Address book - Colour screen - Calculator - Clock - Date Book (you can set an alarm on appointments, meetings that you can’t afford to miss) - Memo Pad - Note Pad - To Do List - Sync feature to sync details with your computer - Size: 11cm x 7 cm x 1.5 (l,w,d) or 4.5 in x 2.7 in x .5 in
In terms of charging, it is advised that you charge it every day. However if you don’t, then the battery life can last up to about 3 days. Like all palms, there’s a stylus (the pen thinggie) that’s included and which you need to use to navigate around the device. It’s simple to use and if you want to use e.g Address, just touch the Address icon and then fill in your details. You can either learn to write using your stylus by learning the ways that the palm recognises letters (this is really simple and most of the letters are the way you would write normally) or you can use the electronic keyboard and just point away at the letters and nos. that you need to use to write your words and numbers.
I think it is a good buy and at a Price of £82 including Shipping and Handling (it comes from Dublin) how can you go wrong. This is good if you want something simple and functional and not too techie. It’s not for you if you want things like MS Office on it or email as it doesn’t possess those features.
Palms from Luzern Tech are also available on ebay. If you go on www.ebay.co.uk and then select ‘ebay Shops’ under Specialty sites and then select ‘Shop Name and Description’ and type in Luzerntech (all one word) you can see their range of items. Just before writing this review, I spoke with the guy from Luzerntech about the M130 as I didn’t see it on the Luzerntech site but rest assured, he’s still got them. If you do want to talk to someone from Luzern, their contact details – well at least the tel. Nos. - are on another site – called www.luzernsolutions.com.
If you are one of those people who have always been sceptical about these things then be sceptical no more. Even if you don’t get the M130, do get a palm. Everyone’s using one, people in my office, my electrician who was fixing my boiler last month, a taxi driver who I saw waiting on a passenger and of course those snobs on the train. So don’t delay, choose a palm today !
Advantages: Cheap, does the job, good screen, SD slot Disadvantages: Dated, quite bulky and heavy
...to PDAs started with the Palm m100. My friend got it back when I was in school and everyone was drooling all over it – it was such a novelty. I set my sights on getting one as soon as I could. By the time I could afford one the best one to get in that price range was the Palm m130. Looking back on it now it was pretty bad, however for the time it was brilliant – partly due to the fact that it was one of the few models with a color screen. These days ... ...also quite funky. I think Palm was trying to position this as a teenager’s device since it has sleek curves and rubberised edges. The screen is quite small – about 2 inches across, and is only 160x160 pixels, however its enough space to use most programs comfortably and the colours are done quite nicely. The top side of the device houses an expansion slot and you won’t find the AAA battery slot on this unit, because unlike the earlier m100 models ...

Advantages: Price, colour!, ease of use Disadvantages: Handle with care!
The Palm M130 has been in the stores for a while now, in the budget colour price bracket. With recent price reductions it can be moved to the budget bracket, costing as it does around the 150-200 pounds mark- but what do you get for your money?
The M130 is a PDA (personal Digital Assistant) and is in essence a computer version of the trusty filo fax with features such as address book, a to do list, calculator, scheduler and note pad. In addition, ... ...really isnt any need to- Palm have got input off to a fine art with the Graffiti feature, basically speaking the display screen is also your writing page, and with a little practise in writing chracters in a certain way that the PDA understands , using the stylus provided (a 'pen' which is in fact a point bit of plastic you press onto the screen). Its not as hard as it sounds, or hard at all in fact, take it from me, i got my mother using it and ...

Advantages: Great little thing to mess around with Disadvantages: Haven't used it all that much in 2 years!!!
It got to the point during the summer where i hadn't really spent ny of my summers earnings and they were now burning an enormous hole in my pocket!
In all honesty i bought this to try to organise my life. In truth, i should have just bought a diary. I really haven't used this thing a lot for what i original intended it to be used for. I'm not disciplined enough to keep a diary so i thought if i had an electronic diary then i'd definitely keep one. I wish i'd saved my £180!
The only thing is use it for is essentially the games. I can download bits of shareware and upload them onto it via its cradle. Its quick and easy to do. Its got loads of cool stuff besides games mind. You can do all sorts with digital ...

Technicolour dream device
The Palm m130, which is the same form factor as the m125 and slots neatly into the series above this device. What this latest model adds, though, is a colour screen - the first time Palm has offered colour on its lower end products, although the higher price immediately pushes it out of the budget category. Admittedly the colour screen does look good, and it makes the whole experience of using the device more pleasant. ... ...greater demands on battery life, Palm has swapped the triple A batteries found in the m125 in favour of a lithium-ion battery on the m130, which recharges whenever it is plugged into the docking cradle. The final new feature on the m130 is Palm OS 4.1. This new version of the operating system has been enhanced to offer better Bluetooth support, and allows you to dial direct from the phonebook via a single tap. The m130 is great for students and buiesness ...

Advantages: Size and weight, expandibility Disadvantages: Not much choice of hardware
My first PDA was a Palm M105, which I got from my wife as a Xmas present. I didn't think I was going to use it very much, but I was about to be surprised. I started having a look around the net for programs and you wouldn't believe how much free stuff there is out there for PDAs. About a year later, the 8M of memory were becoming a bit crowded, so I decided to upgrade to an M130 for the colour screen, the rechargeable batteries and the SD expansion ... ...(not many) to connect via the SD slot, such as tiny cameras, blue tooth, etc.

Advantages: SImple installation; easy access to common Palm apps and functions Disadvantages: Universal connector now superseded; fitting sometimes tricky
the keyboard. The connector cover pulls away to reveal the connector, which fits Palm models with the Universal connector (Palm i705, Palmm125, Palmm130, Palmm500, Palmm505, Palmm515, Tungsten C, Tungsten E, Tungsten T, Tungsten T2, Tungsten T3, Tungsten W, Zire 71). I used it with a Tungsten T.
The underside of the connector cover flips up to become a rest for your Palm device. To attach the keyboard place the connectors together gently. This was fiddly at first as the connecting hooks are very tiny but eventually I got the hang of it. To detach, rock the device forward gently. Again, this takes some getting used to, but I can do it quite easily now.
To fold it up again, slide the black plastic back into place, release the locking tab on the upper right side, tug slightly at the right side till it lifts off, then push it to the left ...
Advantages: Its a palm sized, fully functional computer Disadvantages: Grafitti interface can go haywire with overuse
the old pocket protector. But with the right soft case, it sits comfortably at your side, ready for action!
The TT comes with all the standard PDA software: Datebook, To Do List (now Tasks in later models), Address Book (Contacts), Notepad, Memo, Clock, etc. It still uses the original Grafitti user interface, which is a bit of a let down, because the newer Palm models have the Grafitti 2 interface and also allow direct input on the screen, so that your handwriting becomes typed letters. I've experienced handwriting recognition issues after prolonged inputting, but then again, I wrote a fantasy novel using the poor little TT, and that might be to blame. But, that's a minor negative because of all the positives the TT offers. The color screen is a fantastic hi-res 320 X 320 pixel screen, a huge leap forward from earlier models (m130, Palm ...

Advantages: Amazing screen, easy to use, lots of features Disadvantages: No Wi-Fi, quite expensive
I got into PDAs a while ago and after owning a couple of them, as well as test-driving quite a few, I settled down with a Toshiba e750 (see my review). The downside of that machine is that it?s geared up to sync with Microsoft Outlook, and at my new job I have to use Lotus Notes. I then heard from some of my co-workers that Palm machines handle the sync with Notes better, so I decided to try out my friend?s Tungsten T3. This is the second time I?ve ever used a Palm device since I had my m130 (see my review) and I was quite impressed at how far Palm have come in their OS and features in the last couple of years.
Design:
The T-series Tungsten?s share a similar design and feature the slider that usually covers the writing area. It looks very similar to a T2 or a T Tungsten and in fact the devices are the same size. The main difference ...
