The Palm M130 has been in the stores for a while now, in the budget colour price bracket. With recent price reductions it can be moved to the budget bracket, costing as it does around the 150-200 pounds mark- but what do you get for your money?
The M130 is a PDA (personal Digital Assistant) and is in essence a computer version of the trusty filo fax with features such as address book, a to do list, calculator, scheduler and note pad. In addition, other software can be downloaded via the internet and your trusty PC- software i've transfered to my 130 includes more than a handful of games such as solitare and monopoly and a Microsoft Office document viewer, there are seemingly endless possibilities for you, just pop onto your favorite shareware site and have a look for yourself!
Once you've downloaded some software off the internet you'll want to transfer it to your PDA... simplicity itself with the hotSync cradle- all you need to do once you've plugged the cradle into a USB port and loaded the software onto your pc is click the PDA into the cradle and press the button on the front of the equipment, with a chirpy beep it'll set off to work- and its pretty quick!- transfer the word document viewer with a view documents and its all ready for you to take away in about 30 seconds!
So you know that when it comes to sharing information between PC and PDA (and vice-versa) is quick and painless but what about writing your to-do list or a quick reminder note.... where's the keyboard??
Well, you can buy an add-on keyboard if you wish but there really isnt any need to- Palm have got input off to a fine art with the Graffiti feature, basically speaking the display screen is also your writing page, and with a little practise in writing chracters in a certain way that the PDA understands , using the stylus provided (a 'pen' which is in fact a point bit of plastic you press onto the screen). Its not as hard as it sounds, or hard at all in fact, take it from me, i got my mother using it and she gave up on mobile text messaging because she couldn't fathom it!
Battery life is good and it recharges when in the cradle so it has never been a problem, a second cradle was a worthwhile investment (around 20-30 pounds) for me as I use the PDA at home and in the office; another worthwhile buy may be protective film that covers the display screen and protects it from scratches- however hard your try and protect these things they are prone to the odd knock or two.
So, overall a worthy buy, there are plenty of PDA models under the 200 pounds mark - many made by Palm- but this stands out because of the colour capability... is it worth opting for becuase of this capability?..... probably.... after all the 64000 (ish) colours brighten up an otherwise dull operating system...... and we all need a bit of brightening up during the working day dont we :)
Don't buy it if you don't have any use for a filo fax or diary, but if your life is one big list of things to do and people to meet, or you just want a fancy place to put your weekly shopping list this is a little gem at an affordable price.
