Palm's new m500 is the successor to the Vx. It looks virtually the same, although the shape is now slightly more rounded and the colour somewhat darker. So what are the new features? To list them briefly: USB synchronisation, faster processor, new operating system, and (at last) memory expansion in the form of a Secure Digital / MultiMedia Card slot. In detail:
The new USB synchronisation is a long overdue development as far as Palm are concerned. The Handspring PalmOS machines have had USB synhronisation for years. The downside is that Palm have introduced yet another form of edge connector at the bottom of the device. There was outrage in the Palm community when they switched from the classic Palm connector (found on every Palm up to the IIIxe) to the Palm V type, and now this... if you're not an existing Palm owner, you probably don't care, however, if you are: none of your peripherals will work. The new range now uses a 33MHz Motorola VZ processor, rather than the 16MHz one found in the older Palms (IIIx upwards) and the 20MHz one found in the Vx. I hate to say it, but you probably won't notice any serious speed gains except in real heavyweight apps like ThinkDB and AvantGo. See my Visor Platinum review for more.
More good news: PalmOS 4.0 rocks. It addresses the worst of the issues I had with 3.5, i.e. chronic graphics slowdown when compared to earlier 3.x versions, and the inherent bugginess (I am forced to reset my Visor Platinum once a day at least, the m500 more like once a week).
The coolest thing about PalmOS 4.0 has to be the support for proper filing systems (at last!), which means applications can now access data on expansion cards much more directly. TRG (now called Handera) have been doing this for some time with their TRGpro, but the m500 series are the first mainstream units to support expansion cards like this (the Springboard flash modules work in an entirely different way).
The most important addition, in my opinion, would be the addition of the SD / MMC slot. It really is about time Palm started fitting expansion slots to their machines. The 8Mb provided really isn't enough to store serious amounts of data. I can understand Palm's reasoning for fitting an SD / MMC slot (they're very small), but I think a Compact Flash slot would have been a better choice, not least because CF is considerably cheaper, and also available in higher capacities.
I'll never forget plugging a 1Gb IBM Microdrive into my TRGpro for the first time (it's a miniature hardrive in a CF Type 2 casing). One whole gigabyte of capacity in the palm of my hand. I'd love to be able to do that with the m500. If you want the best of both worlds, check out the Handera 330 (www.handera.com). Not only has it got some seriously cool features that no other Palm device can offer, it has not only a CF type 2 slot, but an SD / MMC slot too. It's pretty ugly though.
I do have one small reservation about this device: the screen isn't quite as clear as the Vx. At least, the screen on the unit I'm using isn't as clear as the screen on my friend's Vx. Hmm.
Here's my brief conclusion on this unit: if you don't need the expansion slot, buy a Palm Vx instead. They are way cheaper, and an upgrade to PalmOS 4.0 should be out for them in the very near future (if it isn't already). If you're set on a colour screen, think about the m505.
If you already have a Palm, don't bother upgrading just yet - there's some very interesting PalmOS devices coming this way. If you're the kind of person who needs to carry around serious amounts of data, get a Handera 330. If you want flashy graphics and sound, wait for the new Sony N700C, it's got some really sweet tricks up it's sleeve.
Advantages: Stores everything you will need. Disadvantages: Complications in writing.
...entrepreneur; however I have a palm handheld. Admittedly I did not buy this myself; it was given to me from my L.E.A. as part of my learning recourses package, to help me get through university with Dyslexia. And it has managed to do just that!
WHAT IT IS
The Palm m500 is no longer top of its range, (it has limited “beeb” noises and not sound, and it is in black and white) but is still far more than the average personal organiser! Palm computers ... ...tap the icons. From most Palm tops you can link to a PC, and also in the case of the Palm m500 an Apple Mac. The memory of the Palm is 8MB which is extendable though multi-media cards.
WHAT IS DOES
Without any extensions this palm handheld computer can store 1000’s of addresses and telephone numbers, and written or drawn data. There is a diary which can be viewed by hour, day or month, you can edit the importance of each meeting, keep things private ...

Advantages: Stylish, light and functional Disadvantages: No colour screen
I've had the m500 for about two years now and it has never let me down. It's a good solid PDA work horse. The software that's preinstalled, although basic does "exactly what it says on the tin". The calendar / appointment function displays are clear and appointments can be set to repeat daily, weekly, monthly or yearly. Various alarms can be set to remind you of appointments and there is also a vibration feature with can be used in conjuntion with ... ...to set up and has enough fields to add e-mail and multiple telephone numbers for home, business mobile etc.
There is also a basic "To do..." list function which you can assign priorities to and store in seperate folders.
A useful feature for jotting things down is also available which works like an electronic post-it note. At first I thought this was a little gimmicky but I'm amazed how many times I've used it to jot down a diagram or take someones ...

Advantages: Small, Easy to use, Light Disadvantages: No colour screen, no real sound
This has got to be the best PDA for the price. I managed to pick up one in a sale for about £100. Now I know it doesnt have a colour screen and the sound is, well, awful but lets face it. We dont usually use a PDA for the kind of things that need sound and fast video.
This PDA lets you sync your email, check diary appointments, doodle, write essays or notes and best of all it lets you play games on a crowded train :)
Comes with IR built in and ...

Advantages: Gorgeous looks and feel, lovely cradle, USB sync Disadvantages: Non-upgradeable OS, nasty clip-on Springboard adapter
.5 disease just like the Platinum (see my review here at Ciao for more), despite the very nippy 33MHz VZ processor.
The nice features include the cradle (possibly the best PDA cradle I have ever seen), and the screen which has to be the clearest black & white LCD I have ever seen. The rechargable battery also earns it bonus points. It's also good to have the choice of colours, although I like the neutral silver best. This is a really good effort by Handspring, and deserves to do well, although I feel it's slightly overpriced. It's a viable alternative to a Palm V series machine, but the Palmm500 series offers far more. ...
Advantages: it simplifies evrything for you, easy to carry, easy to use, Thousands of free software applications Disadvantages: you need to use battery you can't charge it
This is my fist palm pilot. I decided to buy my palmm100 after seeing my friend's palmm500. But There was no need to buy that expensive one. I checked the models. And the m100 was the most suitable one for me. Palmm100 is a very useful device.
It has Date Book, Address Book, To Do List, Memo Pad, Infrared whic used to meam data, Note Pad, Color Face Plates, Clock At-A-Glance, AvantGo's Web Channel Manager, Link to Microsoft Outlook included, Storage Capacity, 2 MB of Memory.
Best thing about it, you can import and export your data. For example, you can transfer all your data into your address book in your email account. You can transfer your documents from computer to your palm.
Also owing to Palm Desktop, everything you have in your palm is also in your computer. You can never loose your data, since you always have back ...

Advantages: Small, beautiful, sexy and lots of 3rd party software Disadvantages: Once you have it you can't cope without it
this actually works really well apart from youru phones slow download speeds.
What else... oh yes the piece de la resistance- despite their curvy and waif like appearnce these things are like heavily armoured tanks- mine survived a spin wash and 60degree tumble dry :-))))
But what about the new palms- m500 and m505 -> well they offer card expansion (good if you have memory intensive tasks) and the m505 has a colour screen-> but since I have never played with these babies I don't know much. A good thing from them is that the wonderful Palm Vx's price will go down :-)
Want one? I can't live without one :D
