#1. It's a Palm! One of the ONLY businesses that's still in the business of making and supporting PDA's. I have nothing against the Blackberry, Treo, I-Phone or others, but it's comforting to know that the product I bought is backed by the same business that started it. 5 Reasons I think the Palm T/X is a great find. I began my PDA journey with the Handspring Visor , outgrew it and moved on to Handspring Visor Deluxe; bought most of the springboard modules, fax/modem, camera, memory, keyboard, etc and finally sold it and turned to the (all in one) Sony Clie NR70V (which I subsequently over worked and burned out). Thus began my 2 year search for a better PDA. I don't know why it took me so long to come back to the originator of the PDA, but I choose the Palm T/X, for five reasons.
1. It's a Palm! One of the ONLY businesses that's still in the business of making and supporting PDA's. I have nothing against the Blackberry, Treo, I-Phone or others, but it's comforting to know that the product I bought is backed by the same business that started it. (what happened to Handspring, the Sony Clie' line, and others?
2. The Palm T/X does what a PDA is supposed to do...manage your personal, professional and business information. No- it doesn't have a little camera that takes still photos or a short video clip, but how many people who have camera phones use them for real photography anyway. I have a digital camera with 6.1 megapixels if I want to take a picture worth developing. No- my Palm T/X does not double as a cell phone. I have a cell phone with one of the lowest rates around. When I get a call on my cell phone I don't have to "write" down the information somewhere else then enter it into my PDA...my PDA is ready for use right now!
3. I can actually use my PDA as a multi-media device! I already have dozens of songs saved that I can listen to while I'm doing something else. I have several programs I use for lectures and presentations as well as for writing.
4. WiFi is available! My Palm T/X picks up WiFi at the local university, nearly every fast food place and major hotel chains as well as our local library...for free. I can surf the net, check my e-mail, and generally do what I would be doing on my bulky desktop or slightly less cumbersome laptop.
5. Plenty-O-Software Applications! I never have to worry that I won't be able to find an entertaining game or interesting application for my PDA. There are still a lot of Palm OS designers out there who are making some really GOOD stuff! Unlike other systems which seem to have a perpetual "COMING SOON" attitude toward software, Palm is more like "...THIS JUST IN!" I hope that helps...now for the Not-so-good
I don't like the incompatibility with Vista. I have a brand new laptop which came with Vista installed and even with the latest download 4.1.4e Palm T/X does not play well with Vista. I can neither cable/cradle hotsync, nor can I Bluetooth hotsync. My solution - hotsync to my desktop running XP and just download information through my SD Card and my laptop if needed. ('nuff said) I'm also not crazy about the standard flip cover case. I think they could have done much better coming out of the box...the flip cover is pretty much worthless so I'll be investing in a better carrier soon.
Advantages: Stable, excellent OS; masses of free software available; still the top dog. Disadvantages: None.
The Palm TX has been around for a while now and so you may find it a little odd that I'm writing a review of it.
More odd is the fact that the TX is still sold new, years after it first came out.
The reason? As a PDA, it has yet to be surpassed.
Not only is it extremely easy to use and connects to open wifi hotspots with ease, it also has a massive collection of free software available online - from games to productivity, from connectivity to ... ...(Blazer) but you can also run Opera and some other browsers on it too. The email software is also more than adequate.
It is also a top multimedia player and when used in conjunction with the right software, can happily display streaming tv and, if you connect it up to a stereo, makes a handy internet radio.
If you are using it as a souped-up iPod replacement, you can upgrade the storage using any SD card (and they are stupidly cheap at the moment) ...

Advantages: everything! cheap reliable, fantastic features Disadvantages: no spare stylus or screen protectors in box
I got my new Palm TX in August this year and I have been very impressed with its performance and flexibility. I previously owned a Palm Tungsten E which screen was 320 x 320 resolution and had no Bluetooth or Wi-fi, so these 2 features are great additions for me.
For those who have never used a PDA they are all touch screen and most have handwriting recognition to save having a keyboard and in Palm handhelds this is called Graffiti and is very handy ... ...those long journeys.
The new palm desktop software is similar to the previous but has a much easier interface for adding photos and videos by simply dragging and dropping and a similar new tab for adding your Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.
The software package includes many useful programs. Pocket Tunes is an excellent MP3 and WMA player although again requires an SD card to store the music, The latest version of documents to go is included ...

Advantages: Easy to use, fast, and capable Disadvantages: No Cradle
I have worked the TX in a busy environment. utilising the WIFI, bluetooth and email, sms and mp3 ona daily basis. I must say it is very reliable, fast and easy to use.
It is a great all round personal management tool. Slip a 1gig expansion card in it and you have plenty of room for mp3s, pdf docs, word, excel files and ebooks.
Battery life is good however extensive use of wifi does drain it somewhat quickly but i've never experienced full drain. ...

Advantages: Modernized for communications Disadvantages: Steps backward for user-friendliness
A step backward from the Tungsten T, my previous palm. The T/X has not moved forward, design-wise. And cut some useful features. No charge-indicator LED. Screen less responsive. It seems like its forever resetting itself, losing a number of settings along the way. Bottom of screen permanent virtual buttons are not user-configurable! BAD! This is not a happy camper! And this: now extra $ for cradle, which is badly designed, with insufficient place ... ...full-time glow. T/X has no "back" button, like on Sony palms, that was a brilliant function for navigation. Tungsten spring-loaded stylus was lightning fast to deploy, even in hardshell case. Latter case also allowed headphones. Now T/X has done away with both possibilities. Awkward to use. And apparently a slower processor than in its immediate predecessor. Seems like they are slowly closing down their business. Perhaps because of Treo phones? Too ...

Advantages: Good looks, good protection Disadvantages: Not a snug fit
So, you've spent your hard earned cash on a brand spanking new Palm PDA and you intend carrying it around with you on a daily basis. To guard the screen from unwanted scratches, you've applied one of those peel and stick protectors, but what about the rest of the device?
Faced with a similar scenario and not wanting to add years to my brand new, shiny bright PalmTX, I searched around for a cover for my new toy. The two main options available at the time were all-aluminium, fully enclosed cases or, the Proporta Alu-leather case. A quick search around the internet revealed mixed opinions on both cases and , more frustratingly, a lack of information regarding the compatibility with the PalmTX - many reviews at the time suggested that the PalmTX did not fit the cases or, where the TX did fit, the case provided a very slip ...
