It is actually one of my dream comes true product, plus something that i have been waiting for some long time. i still remember year ago, when i fall in love with the PalmOne Tc due to it mini keyboard & build in Wi-Fi, BUT later found out so many bad thing of this product plus the so expense price tag so i wait til today, finally a palmOne products that all in one OR what i need.

but i do understand this is not a easy review, as the Treo 650 can do TOO much plus LOT of function that you can do...so if any point that i didn't touch, you can either ask or request me to add later. BUT i will not touch any of the standard PDA or much of phone software here but only some of the point that related or new to Treo 650.
THE TREO PACKAGE
  • The package comes with a Treo 650 unit, a charges, battery, USB Cable, cds, a manual with a screen protector inside and a free headset.
  • This unit comes with 30 days one to one swap, that mean if any problem you can request the shop to give you a new unit while you give back your old unit.
  • 90days free phone support from PalmOne.
  • 1 year replacement warranty but the unit that you get may "as good as new" only.
THE TREO OVERALL LOOK
  • I personal feel very fine with this Treo 650, it is almost same like Treo 600 except the keyboard and also screen has been improve PLUS added some button.
  • it is in reasonable size, in fact personally i hope it will be bigger with bigger screen cost as a PDA...Hehe.
  • The overall material and build is very good and in high quality, except you may very easy to have "thumb trail" around the screen area cost of the "steel" part...sorry for my poor english.
  • The unit comes with a replaceable battery, that you will need to insert yourself but a very good things for traveler that can get extra battery.
  • there will be a service light keep flashing, i like it very much and you will be able to see your network is available or not. it also used as charging light, alarm/reminder (3rd party software)
  • Treo 650 also support build in vibration, which is reasonable strong for me.
THE TREO LCD SCREEN
  • i do believe one of the good and strong selling point of this Treo 650 is the wonderful screen, it resolution is at 65k color 320x320 and can display very nice photo (some download photo) and overall experience to work with the screen is very good, you also have the option to adjust the brightness (which mean need more battery power)
  • The overall size of the screen is more than reasonable if you take it as a normal mobile phone, OR Great if you compare with mobile phone.
  • The quality of the screen also able you to view the LCD clearly under the direct sunlight, as i still remember the old days with my Palm IIIc that you almost have to hide under your car if you wish to see any info.
THE TREO PHONE FUNCTION
  • the Treo 650 comes with a normal phone function plus some basic application.
  • To on the phone, what you have to do is just press and hold long the "switch off/hang up" button then the phone network will on, NOT like normal handphone use it to switch off your phone. In treo you use it to on and also off your network as palm PDA do not switch off.
  • There will be a nice menu in dial mode, comes with changeable wallpaper with some "favorites" that you may wish to have direct access not only program, but also contacts and also speed dial with a list of 14 and up to 5 pages with a total of 70 space is available.
  • All contacts comes with a build in Photo Caller ID, you also able to edit, add and delete contacts with a choice of photos in your Palm desktop software.
  • there will be no caller group/ringtone assign to contacts, except using some 3rd party software OR assign your contacts at "favorites" page.
  • The overall calls quality of this unit is still acceptable for me, even there is some complain over the internet but for myself that may also not always using this unit to make calls, i face no problem at all.
  • The phone also comes with a very simple call log, that you can check back number that you dial or receive or missed.
  • Basic phone setup like call waiting, call hold is also available.
  • setup up network, GPRS and MMS in this phone is troublefree with auto setup. this also the 1st that i saw, i no need to do anything then on the service with the network operator.
THE TREO SPEAKERS/RINGTONE
  • The overall ringtone quality and sound volume of this Treo is GREAT! (for me) you almost can heard the phone ring from other room that far away (may not included some midi file) and the sound is clear and loud with standard Treo ringtone without any breaking sound even set the volume to maximum.
  • The speaker of the phone is at the back, it look like build in good quality and it is SUPER while playing MP3, just like a mini walkman or better than some cheap walkman but GREAT if compare to any mobile phone like nokia.
  • Treo 650 support normal midi or standard format ringtone and also MP3, but you will need to install 3rd party software to have MP3 ringtone.
THE TREO MESSAGING SYSTEM
  • one things i like Treo messaging system is it comes with a "chat mode" or works like Gmail will group the message from same contact into one list you can view it easily.
  • the message system also support Smily icon, just choose what kind of cartoon face you wish to put and the phone will display the cartoon NOT the :-) type.
  • It support long SMS, and standard MMS with video, sound and photo.
  • Typing using the phone keyboard is easy to work without any problem, therefore this phone do not comes with T9 or maybe not needed.
  • The phone support English only, for some asia country will need to install software to work with text like Chinese.
THE TREO BUTTON/KEYBOARD
  • Working with Treo keyboard is very easy actually, at 1st you may facing some big delay but after sometime of using you will be able to speed up and found out that Treo keyboard is actually work just fine!
  • the keyboard comes with wonderful backlight, it will shine up your face and make you look like a Alien BUT it is without on and off switch that which i think Palm is too stupid on this, cost it waste battery life and no needed for something like that EXCEPT you may need to use a 3rd party software to turn the keyboard lights in auto or manual mode.
  • the software that i use is KBlights that work just fine for me.
  • enter symbol in this keyboard may need some brain power to remember which short cut is for what symbol, because this is NOT a full size keyboard but i face no problem while using it. As after you enter a "familier" look of symbol then you press ALT and you will have a list to choose list of symbol that belongs to that key.
  • by using a software call KEYCAPS, you also able to press and hold any key in a period of time to make the letter capital without need to use the "shift" button.
  • There will be a volume control key, which is not very useful other than adjust volume, as palmone is suppose to make it work better when the phone is running some software as scroll button or whatever but a software called Butler will solve all these.
  • There is also a user accessable hard button just below the volume button that you can assign to any application to work with other than the standard 2 datebook & mail button (Treo 600 is 4 standard button but now has
    Pictures of Palm Treo 650
Palm Treo 650 Picture 745426 tb
    Treo 650
become dial and hang up for phone then add another two is Home and option)
  • The most powerful and useful switch in Treo, i think is the silent button on top of the phone which is kind big in size that you can just slide it to set the all sound off, or on it back again.
  • The Treo 5 way navigator key is also easy and good to work with, except kind of soft and without much feedback is what i notice. BUT not all application support this 5 ways key, some may not work but you have to use the stylus which is in high quality and sexy look just place at the back near the speakers.
THE TREO CAMERA
  • The Treo camera is a plus for this model, even it still do not provide the "state of the art" quality of photo and video, if not this surely a SMART device.
  • Photo taken with this camera is basic or which is standard for most good model in Nokia range, except the photo quality do look bit "cartoon" in term of coloring.
  • You can save all your photo to phone memory, and also in memory card or transfer later to both OR backup to your PC through the desktop software.
  • The camera also able you to take video, the video seem long depend on the memory that you have. i do try take video, the indicator show i got 2 min but after 2 min it will continue shooting the next 2 min til you stop which is better than some mobile phone.
  • Video quality is actually ok for me, it can allow you to take in two resolution which is 352x288 and 176x144 and photo quality can be set as well from 640x480 and 320x240.
  • i do found out the build in photo/video viewing application in Treo 650 is kind of slow, so you may need some 3rd party software if you wish not to wait seconds for every single photo that you wish to view.
  • the camera lens also comes with a self mirror near it, which is useful to take self photo but sadly there is not much function in it camera mode like self timer, maybe some 3rd party software will solve this.
  • The camera can perform well in low light condition, which you do not need to setup or activate like night mode.
THE PHONE MEMORY
  • Treo comes with 32M build in memory which didn't left much around 10+MB after you have your Treo and installed some of the standard CD software, so what 10+MB can do? except you may need to extra memory card as Treo support SD and MMC.
  • The so called memory system problem (NVFS) may already have solution while you read this review, as the latest patch has improve on this issue even palmOne also sent me a free 128MMC card which is some cheap brand card.
  • You will be able to format or rename the card that you insert, BUT you may not able to view the content of your card like explorer in windows, maybe some 3rd party software can do the trick, as when you view using palm build in application, it only show you overall space used for image, sound, application directory and others only.
THE PHONE CONNECTIVITY
  • Treo 650 comes with bluetooh, which is good to work with some devices like other Treo, PDA or even using it for backup in your PC.
  • Treo 650 also have infra red build in, which is very useful to communicate with some older devices BUT treo 650 infra is kind of weak in power, you will need to use it at close range and maybe have to say good bye too to those remote control software until they comes out a solution later maybe??
  • Treo 650 also comes with EDGE, which is great for future upgrade or some country or network that service is available at high speed. except i do hope this Treo can have 3G, then you may no need to buy new phone for a period of long time...hehe.
  • You can use the USB cable that comes with the package to sync with Palm desktop or backup or restore data which is working fast without any problem.
  • One BIG issue that people not happy about this Treo 650 is surely there is no Wi-Fi, even this unit comes with a website browser but you may not want to use it then cost every single KB that you used by GPRS or EDGE. hopefully one day a driver or something will be out, but you will need money to purchase the Wi-Fi card. BUT there is some Treo user also using bluetooth to connect Treo to internet, except i didn't try so cannot comment here.
THE TREO BATTERY LIFE
  • i personally do not found my Treo after replaced one new battery (the last one can't fully charge or weak) can work like what palm mentioned last for week of battery life, even i am not a heavy user.
  • For every 15 min i on my screen, my battery will drop 1% even i set my brightness to around 15% only.
  • The overall standby time is still ok, 2 hour for 1% of drop or after fully charge is 6 hour for the 1st 1% drop.
  • For normal use, the unit will last you maybe 3-4 days before you need to recharge again should be standard for most user.
CONCLUSION:
Sorry but i have to stop, or maybe add more info later day when needed. BUT overall Treo 650 is a good buy, at least not very expense if compare with some mobile phone that even cost more like SONY P series that do less than Palm OS. overall Palm Treo can work like a PDA and also standard mobile phone or MORE as you have tons of software to install and unlimited space for you if you get some big memory card.

But there is lot of software may still not compatible with Treo 650 yet, the best way to test it out other than make sure before install OR after install the software then run it if cannot or reset happen, uninstall it then you Treo should be ok without reset while in normal use. As i do understand some other user keep complain their unit will reset many time, but i used month now, only 1 reset while i using datebook.

Any question or some function that i not mentioned, please feel free to contact me, and please forgive if there is lot of things i have missed as it is too much to talk about for this product if want to provide a FULL review. Thanks!
