I remember when I first got my Palm VII and tried to use it as a phone. To be honest it was a failed attempt on Palm’s behalf and it didn’t quite fulfil any of the functions it was supposed to. I have to admit I was a bit worried about this new device, especially since it cost me almost 400 dollars to purchase. Overall I’m quite happy with it, but it could have been even better. Design The Tungsten W is not small or light, but I think we got used to modern devices not trying to be as small as possible. For its features, and its nearest competition – the Blackberry, its quite a comfortable size. The first drawback is apparent straight away – for some bizarre reason Palm decided to not include a speaker or microphone in the actual device, opting for users to deploy the included handsfree set. It also comes with a cradle, which is quite plain and standard. It connects to your PC or Mac via USB for syncing of contacts and appointments. An AC adapter can be plugged into either the device itself or the cradle. Features The specs are not as impressive as I would have hoped – a slow 33MHz DragonBall VZ processor runs a face-lifted OS 4.1.1 and it only sports a disappointing 16MB of SDRAM. It does have an SD port should you decide to carry some files around with you. The Tungsten is a tri-band GPRS device and even though it can be used for voice calls it does want to be more like the Blackberry. It does do the job as a phone, with functions such as texting, caller ID, conferencing and speed dialling included. As a PDA it has all the standard features and software and anyone familiar with a Palm PDA will feel at home. I was quite disappointment to find that it doesn’t support mp3 playback because of the mono headset. Overall The battery life was quite impressive and it worked for almost 10 hours before packing in. Overall this device is going to find its niche but I wasn’t impressed with it. As a PDA it is quite limited, and as a phone it’s even more limited. Hence I got rid of it and opted for a PocketPC PDA and a regular phone. Sure my pockets are bulging with devices now but at least I know that they do exactly what I want them to do, rather then poorly attempting to do too much.
Advantages: Built in phone, great battery life, built in keyboard Disadvantages: Older OS, coming to end of life
With so much choice in the PDA market, there can be only one reason to even look at the Tungsten W model.
This is a PDA with a built in GSM/GPRS functionality. Simply add your SIM card to the device, the device is unlocked so will accept any network.
You now have a PDA with phone functionality and abilility to connect to internet or to download emails/data.
The model is becoming end of life and there are a number of sites now starting to offer ...
