Introduction ************* I decided to buy the Palm Vx because I wanted a small device that I could carry around with me in my pocket and do all of my day to day needs with and that is just what it did for me.
Installation ************ It comes with a HotSync cradle for the Palm Vx to sit in which allows it to charge and transfer files from the computer to the Palm or the opposite way around. From the cradle to the computer is connected through a serial connection and a power cable is also connected from the cradle to the power socket making this overall setup very easy as well as common sense.
Once the hardware has been set up it has to be installed by inserting the Palm Desktop software CD. When the CD is inserted it is almost as if it installs its self.
Data Transfer *************** Files can be transferred very easily just by pressing the button on the centre of the cradle which up dates the files on the computer with the files on the Palm Vx. The data transfer only takes a few moments to complete depending how much data is being transferred.
Use ***** Pen – The Palm Vx is used by pulling one of two pen shaped sticks out the side of it which easy slot in. These small pens allow the user to touch the screen making it easy to select features, write words and type on the keyboard.
Keyboard – When wishing to enter words and letters there is a digital keyboard that automatically loads at the bottom of the screen when a feature is entered where it is possible to enter characters. The keyboard is very useful and easy allowing for all sorts of characters to be entered which are usually on a keyboard. When using the keyboard I can often enter words reasonable quickly by pressing the letters using the pen.
Actually Writing – The pen that is used can be used to write actual letters or numbers by the user attempting to write a character on the touch screen and the Palm will recognize it. The only down side to this was that some times it would not always be the correct character that I wanted so therefore it is dependant on your ability and style of hand writing.
Look and Feel – I found the look and feel of it to be very smooth and user friendly which looked beautiful and attractive to work with.
Features ********** Address Book – Instead of carrying an address book around with you any more the Palm Vx can do an even better job allowing for large numbers of addresses of people to be entered.
Mail – This feature is only really any good if you have a built in modem. Mine didn’t have one so I didn’t use the mail section very much unless I wanted to write something for when I got home ready to send.
To Do List – This feature displays a digital calendar where the date and time can be chosen and reminders of events can be set.
Memo Pad – Got something in your head that you forget every so often then it can be recorded into the memo pad so you don’t forget any more.
Expense – If you’re always having trouble knowing how much you have spent etc the expense section of the Palm Vx can keep track of that if you enter the details.
Calculator – A standard and scientific calculator allowing for you to carry out quick working out when you’re in a jam.
Games – When ever you’re bored or have some spare time on your hands you can play a number of games on offer. F you get a little bored of playing the same games over and over again new ones can be downloaded from the internet using your computer and transferred over to your Palm using the cradle.
Security – If you don’t want any one coming up to your Palm when you’re not around and having a look through the files on it then you can set a password so when it is turned on a password box is displayed preventing unauthorised users from gaining access.
Extra ****** The Palm Vx comes with a cover which can slot into place where one of the pens are allowing protection from scratches and dents to the screen as well as making the Palm seem more like a wallet rather than a miniature computer.
Specification ************** CPU Speed: 20MHz Size and weight: 4.7" x 3.2" x 0.4"; 4 oz. Storage capacity: 8 MB (approximately 10,000 addresses, 5 years of appointments, 3,000 to-do items, 3,000 memos, 400 e-mails, plus a whole lot of applications
Included applications: Date Book, Address Book, Mail, To Do List, Memo Pad, Expense, Calculator, Games, Security, HotSync software, link to MS Outlook, AvantGo web channel manager, Palm OS 3.3
Included hardware: Palm device and cradle battery recharger
System requirements: IBM compatible running Windows 9x or NT, 8 MB RAM, one available serial port, 20 MB hard drive space, CD-ROM drive
Conclusion ************* I found the Palm Vx very useful and would recommend it to anyone with business purposes or for personal reasons such as remembering certain events. The only small dislike that I with this product was that it wasn’t in color however I believe that this feature will be put into future versions.
Advantages: Lightweight, lots of memory, huge range of software available Disadvantages: monochrome display...but that could also be an advantage
The Palm Vx is for all you people out there who, like me, find that the pace of modern life rather outstrips theability of your mind to keep everything in order and running to schedule. From its core applications to the wealth of software available on the net, virtually every need is catered for, but perhaps the most noticeable feature of the Palm Vx is its sleek and lightweight profile. Its burnished aluminium exterior exudes quality and style and ... ...which comes pre-installed in the Palm Vx (and which does not encroach on the generous 8mb of memory, being stored as they are in ROM), include the following:
Address Book: As you might guess, this allows you to store contact details for all your friends, family and other contacts. There are fields for virtually all methods of contact, such as addresses, phone, fax, mobile and pager numbers, e-mail addresses etc There are also user definable fields ...

Advantages: Lots of memory and massive speed increase Disadvantages: Not quite a web broswer
Price: £249.
The original Palm Pilot stunned the Psion and Windows CE camps by grabbing a massive 20 percent of the market in a few short months. It did this by emulating the most common and familiar human interface devices of all time - pen and notepad - using a touch-sensitive screen, a pen stylus and a conspicuous lack of keyboard.
This simple but effective design has continued - after all, why change a winning formula - to the latest, sleekest ... ...looks almost identical to the Palm V, there are some subtle differences in the Vx version. The CPU is now a 20Mhz Motorola device, while there's a whopping 8MB of memory (this is not an exaggeration - for Palm users 8MB is a huge amount of space).
New software developments mean that the operating system is more intuitive in key areas. For example, there's now an at-a-glance option for listing all appointments and to-do items for a single day. And ...

...was a great buy. What Palm fail to promote adequately is that there is a *huge* back catalogue of software available for easy and cheap download from the Internet.
Initially, it looks like the Palm rates poorly when stacked up against the included software on the Psion, however Spreadsheets and such like are only a download away. They may be at an extra cost over and above the base unit, but the standard is superb. All of the spreadsheets exchange ... ...Palm has been around so long much of the software has become amazing value for money as the price has dropped over the years - that is the advantage of not being an early adopter as far as the base technology goes. The range is bewildering - and some of it is not only essential - but free too! Quick tip for prospective buyers. Do not even consider the 2Mb model. The fact you are reading this shows you are net savvy, and being net savvy means you ...

...to no time, then the Palm is an excellent tool to have at one's disposal. It has an advatage in terms of size over the Psion in that you can really put it in a shirt, jacket or trouser pocket. The software (Chapura Pocket Mirror) supplied, which allows you to connect the cradle to your computer and synchronise your Palm with Outlook is excellent, and is something I use a great deal, rather than using Palm Desktop as a syncing tool. Indeed for users ... ...and other things to other palm owners, as well as to Siemens phones with IR. If you want to add ringtones to your Siemens phone, then the software s25util (works on all IR capable Siemens mobiles) is for you, and it also allows you to change operator logos. At launch its memory of 8mb was as much as anything offered, although other manufacturers, including the PalmOS clone, the Handspring Visor, have larger storage capacities and also expansion capacities.

Advantages: Small, Light, Clear display Disadvantages: not coloured
I've been using my Palm Vx for over a year now, and I find it absolutely indispensable! When I first started researching, I considered the DaVinci, Palm III, and Palm V (the Visor, Palm IIIx, IIIc, Vx weren't available at the time). I decided I really wanted something with the Palm platform since I wanted to "beam" files to other users. I was initially leaning toward the III based on price, but my boyfriend convinced me to spend the extra money for ... ...I highly recommend the Palm Vx for all power users. Apps really eat up a lot of memory, and if you have lots of records I do notice that the Vx can search and find data more quickly than the V. If you really do not think you will use the PDA for more than just an address book, calculator, and calendar, than honestly the Vx is probably overkill for you, and by all means get something cheaper. And if you think the smaller size will make the difference ...

Advantages: Color screen and easy to read with plenty of scope Disadvantages: Very weighty
Also known as the Color Pocket PC, this is by far HP's best attempt at a mass-market hand-held to date. Previous PDAs from the company - with the exception of the earlier colour Jornada 420 - have been large, clunky affairs, sporting loads of features but no style. This is different, and could be the machine to finally push Windows CE, in its Pocket PC form, into the mainstream.
It actually looks a lot like the PalmVx; it's a bit bigger and noticeably heavier (more than twice as heavy, in fact), but has the same style of vertical screen - although this one boasts full colour - and casing and pen stylus. That screen is something of a revelation. Using what Microsoft calls ClearType, it has anti-aliased fonts that make it easy to read electronic books and other documents. This really seems to work; you wouldn't want to stare at it ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of HP Jornada 545
Advantages: Lots of functionality, great colour screen Disadvantages: Big, heavy, poor battery life
My husband has got a PalmVx, which I sometimes use for keeping track of my personal appointments! He has since bought me a HP Jornada 548 so that we have got one palmtop each.
I like this more than the PalmVx because it has a great colour screen, and it can also play music (mp3). I also like the navigation on the device, which is very easy to use. The HP has got lots of additional features compared to the Palm device, which may put some people off, as they are not always that useful. But, with 32Mb of memory, it is highly upgradeable in terms of softwaree (i.e. games for me!!)
I guess if you are seriously looking for an organiser to carry around with you everywhere, then this isn't really for you. It's big, bulky, heavy, and the batteries (which are rechargeable) don't lost too long. My husbands Plam Vx is much thinner ...

Advantages: Very versatile, looks good and plenty of add-ons Disadvantages: May still be expensive
I was looking for an MP3 player for ages. A good one was about £150 and did more than I really needed. 15gig of space sounds nice on paper, but its actually quite difficult to fill. While browsing ebay for one, I glanced over the PDA section and noticed that ooooo....they had colour now. My PalmVx needed to go!
So a new game was created; find a portable device that could replace my PalmVx and play music. And was not too dear. And was in colour. And I liked.
So the hunt began.
Ooooooo...the Palm M505 has colour. And is expandable with its own memory slots. And was cheap. But no music. So I set the bar a little higher, and went to the comparison chart at Palm's homepage.
But what's this......one Palm PDA, some sort of 'Tungsten' (which I could of sworn was the metal a light bulb filament was made from) had a headphone jack ...
