I've been using my Palm Vx for over a year now, and I find it absolutely indispensable! When I first started researching, I considered the DaVinci, Palm III, and Palm V (the Visor, Palm IIIx, IIIc, Vx weren't available at the time). I decided I really wanted something with the Palm platform since I wanted to "beam" files to other users. I was initially leaning toward the III based on price, but my boyfriend convinced me to spend the extra money for the smaller size and sleeker looks, and I haven't been sorry!
I loved the V, but quickly became a power user and had so many apps loaded that my memory was 75% full within the first two months I owned it! Unfortunately, my V was stolen within the first 6 months I had it, but by then the Vx was available, and so I got that as a replacement, and couldn't be happier.
Because of its small size and good looks, I take it everywhere. Of course I have all my phone/addresses in there, as well as all appointments (although I'm much happier with the Datebook3 software than the original program). I have plenty of games to play to amuse me when I'm traveling or waiting (much easier to carry around than a book or magazine!).
I no longer have business cards scattered all over the desk, nor any other little slips of paper with important information getting lost in the bottom of my purse. *Everything* goes into my Vx! Grocery lists, clothing sizes for everyone I buy gifts for, restaurants recommended by friends, driving or walking directions , videos I want to rent, health records (immunizations, prescriptions, etc), recipes, websites I've been meaning to visit. I have a scientific calculator that I use frequently to find the circumference of circles of a particular diameter (I do a lot of crafts and need to know how much ribbon to buy). I also have a great app that keeps scores for up to eight players, which I use in any game from Scrabble to darts (it's great to not have to concentrate on adding scores when you're trying to relax and have a good time with friends)! Really, everything! And so many apps are freeware that you can customize and find programs that suit your needs without spending extra money.
I know a lot of people use it for business, but I find it very useful as a housewife. Reminders when to pick up drycleaning, when bills are due, birthdays; it's been great for reminding me to do periodic housekeeping chores (sometimes if I'd like to do some chore every six weeks, without a helpful reminder on my Vx that doesn't disappear until I check it off I would easily put if off for seven weeks, ten weeks, fifteen weeks. . .). I travel a lot, so I've got a full list of items that should be done before each trip (hold the mail, arrange a pet sitter, etc.), so I don't have to remember everything all the time. And if I am *really* on the ball I can get restaurant and other entertainment information for my destination city downloaded from the internet. It really helps me stay on top of things.
I highly recommend the Palm Vx for all power users. Apps really eat up a lot of memory, and if you have lots of records I do notice that the Vx can search and find data more quickly than the V. If you really do not think you will use the PDA for more than just an address book, calculator, and calendar, than honestly the Vx is probably overkill for you, and by all means get something cheaper. And if you think the smaller size will make the difference between carrying it with you all the time versus leaving it in a desk drawer for occasional reference, by all means pay for the smaller size. I've found it so useful often because I've had it in situations where I didn't *think* I'd need it, but it nevertheless came in handy. Other PDAs have color and other things, but for me, the appeal is the sheer wonder of the amount of information contained in such a small package, and at this time, the Vx can't be beat.
