Wow
When I saw the first ever "palm-pilot 1000" (the pilot bit was dropped after a lawsuit from the pen company) I was in love. Bought immediately and enjoyed from then on. Even its limited memory (128k to the Vx's 8meg) was luxurious for me.
Well when I finally upgraded to the Palm Vx (palm is now a seperate company to 3com) I fell in love all over again. Its curvy slimline figure, clear screen and brushed aluminum case had my heart jumping.
When we get past the physical properties and down to the specs- 8meg rom (memory), greyscale screen, a battery life that goes on and on (lasts about 1 week till I maxed it out) and an all important infared port.
To "hotsync" or communicate/transfer data with your computer you have a hotsync cradle which also acts as the charger for the inbuilt lithium ion battery. Its very simple and only requires the touch of a button to sync.
You use a special alphabet called "graffiti" to enter text into the palm which I learnt within 10minutes and you just keep on improving- you can also buy fullsized keyboards for it that fold into palmsized parts
What can the palm do? - well you literally have thousands of programs from palmgear.com among others- ranging from arcade games- including some with spectactular 3d graphics (eg RaceFever), to programs that allow you to sync word documents with your computer. Avantgo.com allows you to download any website to your palm through your computer and view it later- and has plenty of premade pages such as news and sports. Tealmovie even offers films on your palm (only minutes tho not full hour epics)
With the infared port you can connect your phone to your palm and SURF :-) apprently this actually works really well apart from youru phones slow download speeds.
What else... oh yes the piece de la resistance- despite their curvy and waif like appearnce these things are like heavily armoured tanks- mine survived a spin wash and 60degree tumble dry :-))))
But what about the new palms- m500 and m505 -> well they offer card expansion (good if you have memory intensive tasks) and the m505 has a colour screen-> but since I have never played with these babies I don't know much. A good thing from them is that the wonderful Palm Vx's price will go down :-)
