First the expected benefits. Its built in organiser, address book, calculator, notepad and little sketch pad all work well. (My four year old daughter loves the sketchpad). Its replaced all the functions of my paper organiser, and its only 1/3 the size and weight. At £130 (but shop around, there are bargains down to £100 at least in some places on-line), its cheap enough to be carried around without worry. I had just attended a conference on mobile computing, and I was interested in finding out how usable a stylus text input method would be. I find it acceptable and quite easy. Its about as fast as hand writing in capitals (for me, maybe some are much faster), so OK for a few sentences, brief notes in a meeting etc, but would get wearing if used for much more... The PC or Mac software works fine. I use either a desktop PC, or a PowerBook (no serial port), and I found I could synch using the IR port on the Mac, although its a bit hit and miss. I emailed 3Com about it, they say they don't support it, but its OK most of the time.
There is plenty of software (free/sharew/commercial), and ebooks about, and I found that carrying an ebook is much easier than carrying a novel about. First unexpected benefit was the usefulness of ebooks. I also discovered a service called Avantgo, that allow you to download abstracts of daily newspapers, even cartoons like Dilbert, I even found out about ciao.com by reading the article in the Guardian's online section on my M100. Thats great. A really unanticipate benefit is that with the right software you can use it as TV remote control, bizarre (but quite useful!).
Biggest problem is the memory, I've had to strip off a lot of stuff to make room for an ebook, and my daily newspaper, address book, organiser, and TV remote control. Its not easily upgradable, no expansion slot, only way is to solder an 8M chip on the board instead of the 2M one (shudder). 3rd parties will do this, but it isn't cheap. Also the display is really small, and fairly low contrast. I've found quite a few conditions where I'm really straining to see the screen, even 5% bigger might be an advantage... Battery life is usually 2 weeks, but if you use the backlight then the battery life is a lot shorter. I've moved to NimH cells, so I don't feel guilty about turning on the light.... However I'm pleased it also uses alkaline cells, so I can just buy some if the battery runs short. I have had it crash a few times, but resetting is easy, and I have NEVER lost any data.
I'm pretty sure I'd buy this again, with the one proviso that I'd probably buy an 8M version if there was one.
Advantages: Small, easy to use, very customisable Disadvantages: Stylus too light, cover can be too flimsy
...doing an offer on the Palm series, and I decided that I'd take the oppurtunity to get the Palm M100 at half price. My mate had got a Palm device and had used it every available chance so why not me? After all at least I could synchronize my address book and calendar with the PC...
The unit itself is pretty small and lightweight and has a handy flip top cover to stop the monochrome touch screen from getting scratched. I do have one gripe with the ... ...the screen which makes the Palm think it's being used and thus negate the auto-off feature to stop the unit from powering down if not in use. A small niggle though.
As I've mentioned the M100 is touch screen and you use a stylus which fits into the back of the unit to navigate around and enter data. The stylus does feel a little too light, but it is bareable. If your just navigating and not entering data I've found fingers work just as well to push ...

I was given a Palm m100 handheld computer recently and I've seldom put it down since. Not only do I find this device invaluable in my job, keeping me organised, but when it comes to leisure time it pulls it's weight too (connecting to the internet for film reviews/cinema listings and SMS text messaging via infra-red connection to my mobile phone).
Now I know that this machine has been criticised for having a smaller screen than other Palms and for ... ...(much more convenient that the Palm III's cover) but it would have been nice if it clipped into place whether open or closed to prevent it flapping about.
Two AAA batteries are what power this light yet rugged machine and, so far, I have found the battery life to be excellent.
All in all if you're looking for an affordable way of joining the growing army of PDA owners and you're not fussy about all the bells and whistles of more expensive units ...

...but you don't want your Palm mistaken for one. Plus, this PDA is the runt of the family and a little bit flimsy as a result. Keep it away from your five year old nephew!
Unfortunately these things will eat batteries. Pity that you can't get a solar panel that you could attach to your belt and then cable to the PDA.
Also, don't try and store anything that wouldn't fit on a floppy disk. 2Mb is your limit on this baby. You can't add to it either. ...

Advantages: Cheap, easy to get to grips with, plenty of additional applications available Disadvantages: More memory would be nice, stylus is less than brilliant
...the power of its bigger Palm cousins (for example, the m100 only has 2MB of on-board memory, as opposed to the 8MB which is standard on the higher models) but for casual users, it's perfectly capable of doing everything you could possibly need it to; in fact, once you've gotten used to it, you'll wonder how you ever did without it!
The 2MB of memory might not sound like a lot, especially if you're more used to PCs with storage typically measured ... ...than the rest of the Palm family, but not significantly so. Power is supplied by two standard AAA batteries, unlike the rechargeable batteries which most other PDAs use. The Grafitti handwriting recognition software takes a little getting used to, but you'll soon have it down to pat. The unit comes supplied with a great little flip cover, which as well as protecting the screen gives easy access to the "clock" function; one press of the Up button ...

Advantages: Price, compatibility, size, style Disadvantages: Memory not expandable
With the introduction of the Palm m105 - with 8Mb instead of 2Mb in the m100, I recommend the newer model, although if you can pick up the m100 for a song - go for it!
Do you really need a PDA when you already have a PAD? The recent introduction on the Palm m100 will have a lot of people wondering if now is the time to ditch the old diary and switch to a handheld. For anyone who already uses MS Outlook for his or her diary, to do list and address ... ...YOUR POCKET The Palm m100 is an all new handheld that easily slips into a shirt pocket and boasts the power and the memory of far more expensive machines. There are two software packages on the CD ROM supplied, the first synchronises your m100 with MS Outlook, the second is a “personal information management” tool, similar to Outlook. HOT SYNC Plug the HotSync cable into the computer and the neat plug into the m100, press one button and ...

a pda (personall digital assistant) is a organiser with a diference. i hope this review will help you in your choice.
They say sequels are never any good, but that's in the movie business and doesn't really count for PDAs. Palm's m105 is the successor to Palm's first entry-level series model with the same name as the series, the m100, and offers improvements such as a RAM boost, mobile Internet connectivity with e-mail support and a synchronization cradle. The question is: Has Palm made a device that falls between two chairs by trying to make an entry-level device that boasts some major league features? Let's take a closer look.
The hardware
When I opened the stylish, new package from Palm I was surprised by the low number of items inside the box. All that was included was the device itself, the synchronization cradle and some ...

Advantages: Cheap, does the job, good screen, SD slot Disadvantages: Dated, quite bulky and heavy
My first introduction to PDAs started with the Palmm100. My friend got it back when I was in school and everyone was drooling all over it ? it was such a novelty. I set my sights on getting one as soon as I could. By the time I could afford one the best one to get in that price range was the Palmm130. Looking back on it now it was pretty bad, however for the time it was brilliant ? partly due to the fact that it was one of the few models with a color screen. These days most PDAs are superior to this model, however you can pick up a real bargain on eBay (around 40 pounds) and this little device does most things nice enough for you to still consider it.
Design
The design is a bit chunky, but also quite funky. I think Palm was trying to position this as a teenager?s device since it has sleek curves and rubberised edges. The screen ...

scrollbars if the text goes off the screen. Also, with the IR, if there is someone that has something on their Palm that you want, it can also be sent to you. If you are quite comfortable using new technology, or even if you are not, then it feels like MS Windows because it is so easy to use. The battery life is excellent and the good thing is that you can leave it permenantly charged if you are at your desk without the battery getting damaged (unlike some mobile phone batteries).
Overall, well worth buying if you are going to use it. If it is just a fashion accessory, them maybe the PalmM100 would be better as it is about 1/3 of the price and aimed more at "non-business" customers. ...
