Ahh, stretch marks. There's nothing pleasant about them, they're ugly, unsightly and anything I can do to prevent them will be most welcome. That is why I purchased a bottle of Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula for Stretch Marks.
I bought this because I've known of this brand for a very long time and it seems to be a well trusted, widely used product so I was excited to try it. The bottle I bought seemed to definitely be for pregnant women as there is a drawing of a image of a pregnant woman on the front although I assume you could use this product even if you weren't pregnant to use on existing stretch marks as it says on the bottle that is helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
THis lotion is classified as a massage lotion that can be used all over the body. It is clinically and dermatologically tested and includes Vitamin E, collagen and Elastin as some of its ingredients. According to the Palmers website it is the breakdown of collagen fibres in the skin that can cause stretch marks, so by adding collagen to your skin with the use of this lotion it is adding ingredients to the skin that can help to prevent stretch marks.
Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from harsh elements that cause rough dry skin and can also help to improve the appearance of scars.
Elastin gives the skin suppleness and flexibility to stretch without tearing. This is invaluable in pregnancy because your skin stretches so much and it's when it stretches that little tears under the skin can cause stretch marks too.
Cocoa Butter has been used by women for years and is a proven to have superior smoothing properties.
So, it seems like this cream has all the right ingredients to help to prevent stretch marks which is good. So, how did I find it. Well, I bought a bottle that has a pump action at the top which I think is a really great benefit. You can leave this bottle on your dresser and then just pump it to get the lotion out instead of squeezing it from a jar which then leaves your hands free to help you smooth the lotion all over your body. The lotion is very thick and you can definitely tell it has some form of elasticity in it, you can just feel it so I definitely feel like the ingredients are working. It goes on smoothly though and also soaks in well to the skin, it does not make you feel sticky or greasy which you might expect from a thick lotion.
The one thing I did not like about this lotion was the smell. It really does not smell nice at all, it has a bit of a chemical smell and this almost puts me off were it not for the thought of ugly stretch marks which puts me off more. However, I would have definitely preferred if they had added a pleasant smell to this lotion which would make applying more fun.
I have used it now for over 3 months and so far so good, no stretch marks at all to announce and I have also been using it on some existing marks and they seem to be going down a little bit which is great. I'll update my review once I am about 9 months pregnant to see if it carries on the good work.
The lotion is a bit expensive but not too bad considering what it does. A 250ml bottle costs £5.59 and is definitely a product I recommend.
