Previously called Care Mats, Pampers Change Mats are disposable absorbant waterproof mats with a white soft top and a lilac coloured plasticy underside. The Change Mats are 60 x 60 cm and come in packs of 12. The current cost is £5.99 per pack (checked with both Boots and Tesco).
They are designed mainly to put under your baby when changing napppies but can also be used for putting under a potty when potty training, to protect your furniture when your child is playing or eating, when your child is playing without its clothes and also as a protection
for your clothes when burping the baby and for protecting the bed overnight for older babies. There is a warning on the side of the package that says they should not be used for children under 12 months on a soft surface where they are unsupervised such as a cot, bed or playpen. For sleeping/overnight use for children over 12 months old, always place the Change Mat under the bed linen with the white absorbant surface face up. I think this is because the baby can get very hot and sweaty due to the plasticy underside.
My daughter will be 2 years old at the end of this month and I've been using these mats since she was born. I was in hospital for 4 days after having her by caesarean and the midwives used something similar in her bassinet when changing her nappy and although I'd never heard of this type of product before, as soon as we got home I sent my husband out to find them.
In the beginning I used them on her cot-top changing mat when changing her nappy and after her bath and I found it brilliant as anyone with a newborn will know what a messy business it is changing them. Quite often she would poo or wee when the nappy was off and with the change mat all I had to do was wrap it up in a nappy sack and throw it away, no worries about washing towels. Friends of mine have used towels to change the baby but I honestly couldn't conceive of doing that, it would be far too messy and the wee could easily leak through the towel onto whatever was underneath.
When my daughter go too big for her cot-top changing mat we resorted to changing her on my bed with a Pampers mat underneath and that's what we've done ever since. I definitely couldn't have done without them and it makes changing very quick and easy. When she was little I would need a new mat every 3-4 changes as she would inevitably mess on it but now that she's older I can go literally weeks without having to use a new one. Sometimes I need a new one as with use the old one sometimes starts to fluff a bit but that is the only downside (apart from the cost).
I also always keep one in my changing bag for when we go out and it has proved to be very useful. Most baby change rooms in shops provide paper towel for putting under your baby but I find them a bit rough and sometimes nothing is provided so I just pull out my changing mat (which folds down quite small) and use that and if it gets messed on I can just throw it away. I've also used it for changing my daughter on the grass in the park and on the floor or sofa at friends houses, without having to worry about making a mess.
The Pampers Bed Mat is basically the same product but larger. It's 90 x 80 cm and has what I can only describe as wings that are designed to tuck under a cot or single bed mattress to keep the mat in place. It comes in packs of 7 and costs £5.99.
I have a pack of these that has lasted me for about a year and I've only used them when my daughter has been ill and there's a danger that the smaller mat might not contain the mess. I've also used it under her sheet when my daughter was being sick during the night so as not to ruin the mattress and it worked very well for this. My daughter isn't yet toilet trained but I can see that this might help with bed-wetting although it seems like an expensive option. In that case I might use a plastic sheet instead.
To sum up I think the Change Mats are an excellent product and I honestly couldn't have managed so well without them. They are a bit expensive but that hasn't worried me as I think they're worth the money to save myself the stress. If you're on a tight budget then I would buy a pack to use when out and about and use your usual method at home, they are definitely worth having around.
