I stay home & bring up my children in the daytime & at night I turn into "MadAlice" the crazy candle lady! I enjoy new brands & products, but only vegie options. I'm married to a man, not a house.

I received a free sample of a Pampers Care Mat when my daughter (now 5 years old) was about a year old. I had no idea what to do with it, but I thought it might come in handy sometime so put it away with the other nappy-changing paraphanalia. I never used it to lie her on whilst changing - I used a changing mat for that; I never used it to lie her on whilst playing/rolling - none but the tiniest babies play in the one spot; I never used it while potty training or getting her through the night without a nappy. Heaven knows what this product is designed for. It's absorbant, like a nappy and can be used just the once, like a disposable nappy, and like a disposable nappy, it comes in a pack emblazened with wording to make you feel your child's life will be incomplete unless you shell out large sums of money on a regular basis to purchase the things in bulk. I guess it's not biodegradeable, as it's made by the same manufacturers who supply thousands of disposable nappes to occupy land-fill sites for the next few hundred years. Since receiving the free sample, I've raised another baby, through nappy changes, weaning, potty training and getting "dry at night" and still the only "Pampers Care Mat" I've ever owned remains in the cupboard. There must be someone out there for whom this product is indespensible (although disposable), as I still see them on the shelves in the supermarket. However, I cannot help thinking it's just another way for the manufacturers to get yet more money out of unsuspecting parents by convincing them of yet another "baby-must-have" product. I only wish people could hang on to a little of their sensibility when they have a baby, but unfortunately, Mother Nature gave us that lovely "I've just had a baby - don't expect any sense out of me" attitude (an interesting by-product of lack of sleep, complete terror that you have full responsibility for another tiny human being and desire to show the mother-in-law that you can cope) and this will always be seized upon by organizations keen to make a buck out of the vulnerable members of society.
I think I had a free one of these and also couldn't work out what they were for. Maybe like a diposable changing mat if you didn't want to cart a bigger one around. Although I got a small mat with my pram bag so I've never needed these.

Welcome to Ciao. A good first review. New mums are swamped by items they supposedly need. Maureen
