My son is dry throughout the day, and is virtually dry all the way through the night, but we still have the odd “accident”.
He’s coming up to five and has decided that the pyjama pants or “nappy knickers” as he calls them, are too babyish for him and now refuses to wear them.
So looking around for a solution to the odd night-time accident led me to Pampers Bed Mats.

Pampers have two similar sorts of products here – Change Mats and Bed Mats. The main difference is the size – the Change Mats are small enough to be put in your bag (square 60cm x 60cm) and carried around for baby changes. The Bed Mats are that much larger and have “bed wings” to allow you to secure the mat on the bed. These were what we were after.

The reason we opted for this type of product was that I didn’t particularly want to use a rubber mattress protector, as we are invariably woken up at night and need a quick total bed change. I don’t want to be mopping down and disinfecting a rubber mat at 3 o’clock in the morning. So they are the most convenient option for us.

-Quantity and dimensions-
Pampers Bed Mats currently come in packs of 7.
Each mat is 80cm wide by 90cm long.
They are folded in four in the pack. They are not individually wrapped.

-Appearance-
Resembling a small cot sheet when open, one side is plastic coated to prevent moisture from going through to the mattress. The top side has a diamond quilted central panel to wick moisture away from the child.
There are clear instructions on the waterproof side of the mat advising you which side should face the mattress.

-Quality-
They aren’t overly thick, but serve a purpose. I have noticed however, if they stay on the mattress for a while the quilted side, which is paper-based does tend to bobble up, but I’ve not found that it affects absorbency.

-Use-
You place the mat directly onto the mattress widthways across the bed about a third of the way down (make sure the child’s bottom will be central on it). The mats have non-quilted “bed wings” which are then tucked under the mattress to hold it in position.
A sheet is then placed over the mat and tucked in. The duvet or sheet and blanket are then placed on top of that.
These mats do not prevent the bed linen from getting damp, they are to prevent the mattress from soaking up the urine and becoming damp, unhygienic and stained. Be prepared to have a bundle of bedlinen and pyjamas to wash. Once soiled you will need to throw the Bed Mat away.

-Cost-
A pack of 7 typically costs me around £4.96 per pack at Asda. Waitrose are charging £4.99. They are not cheap, but my son has an accident on average once a week and so a pack lasts a fair amount of time.
There are several on-line sites where you can buy in bulk, which can work out cheaper.

-Try them-
Go to ebay and you can find small quantities for sale. I was unable to find any free trial offers, sadly!

Apparently Pampers Bed Mats can deal with the contents of up to a 10 year old’s bladder. I just hope my son is dry by then!
