So, ok we haven't really seen the sunshine yet and our normal summer is over, but i write this just in case the weather forecasters somehow manage to predict correctly that we do get an Indian summer!!
My son is your average normal toddler won't keep still for more than five seconds at a time. I'm sure you can imagine the mess we get into if i decide to put suntan cream on him whilst we're down the beach... all the sand is such a distraction to the poor lad and protecting his skin doesn't seem to be at the top of his priorities. Surprise Surprise! So in come Sunnies to save the day, and my patience!
Ok so what are they I hear you ask. They are wipes, same size and texture of a baby wipe (think johnsons not huggies for them mums in the know), the main difference with sunnies is that they contain
suntan lotion. Factor 30 suntan lotion to be correct.
The wipes come in packs of 30's in similar packaging to johnsons wipes, but in bright canary yellow. You can either buy a refill pack or a starter pack which includes a bright yellow plastic case to store them in. The starter pack also comes with some handy sun stickers. They tell you once your child has had enough sun. Just pop the sticker on an article of clothing, I tend to put it on my lads sun hat and cover it in sun lotion. Once the sticker changes colour you know that your child has had enough sun and should be covered up or placed in the shade. I found this very useful being a 1st time mum and being worried about my boy getting burnt. They are an ideal size to pop into your handbag or baby bag, but still leaving room for all essentials. Now they aren't cheap which is a downfall, the starter pack will cost you around £8, for a refill pack you are looking at a RRP of £5.99, but i have found they are sometimes on offer in Lloyds the Chemist and Boots, and have brought them as low as £2.99 a pack.
So, they are very easy to apply, initially they go on white so you can see the coverage, but then they sink in very quickly, so you don't see your kid wondering round looking like they've seen a ghost. My sun has been blessed with olive skin, and he never looks white so it does work! Being that the sun cream is in a wipe its also very easy to cover hard areas, such as his ear lobes, fingers, cheeks (no more worries about putting sun tan cream in their eyes!) I must say that they are also waterproof which is a godsend, but the pampers website advises reapplication after swimming.
Ok so what are the drawbacks? first of all they do tend to be expensive, so you really do need to shop around for offers which takes time, time which busy mothers don't seem to have. I tend to need 2/3 wipes to cover my 22 month old for each application, and i reapply every 3 hours or so and every time after he's been in the sea. This means if i go down the beach for the day I can easily end up using 1/3 of the pack
The plastic box which comes with the starter pack is quite flimsy and was cracked within 2 weeks, and the sticker tab on the plastic refill pack tends not stick down too well once you've opened the pack a few times. Never mind getting full of sand too! This leads to the wipes drying out, so i often end up throwing away the top wipes as they have dried out. So they are wasted. I have since found a Tupperware that contains the wipes quite nicely without taking too much room so this has stopped the wastage.
They also only come in SPF30 - which will be little use if your child has very fair skin. They also tend to leave my hands white and a bit greasy, however my lads skin is never like this.
So would I recommend them? Well yes I would, but not for use all the time as they work out so much more expensive then a bottle of sun tan cream. If you are going on holiday I think they are ideal. Or just putting them in your babybag for when you are out and about.
Personally I think I have found an ideal solution, and the best protection for my son. I use a ‘sun suit’ for my son which has an SPF60 and then use the sunnies for all his visible bits such as face hands and toes. A pack which once lasted me only 3 days now lasts me nearly a month.

Thanks for this review. I bought some of these and they ARE really expensive. Hadn't considered that fact that they would dry out so will end up buying some spray or lotion too!!!
