So far so good! I’ve only had this phone for about 2 weeks and I have to say it’s made a mighty big impression on me for a start! This being my first colour phone I was pretty amazed. I was a bit sceptical getting it though as not a lot of my friends have colour phones capable of EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service). I was also thinking well ‘will this phone be able to compete with my Nokia 5210?’ Fortunately it beats my Nokia by far! Haha that’s new technology for you! Doesn’t matter about the EMS – I can wait till my friends catch on.
I was looking for a new phone because erm… well ok okay I got bored with my Nokia and always like getting my hands on new gadgets! You’re probably saying ‘waste of money’ but I couldn’t help myself the phone was there, the temptation was there, how could I resist? And at £129.99 how could I say ‘no’? I bought the phone from Argos previously priced at £149.99. I thought ‘this is a bit strange. It’s colour and I bought my Nokia for £169.99.’ Both on O2 pay as you go so I can just switch the SIM card to my Genie one. I was going to get the Samsung T100 but almost everyone is going to have one of those they seem to be quite popular and I’m quite ‘individual’ on my choice of phone (yes – I have lots…) so I decided to go for the Panasonic hoping it would deliver the goods.
Now the juicy info on the phone you’ve been waiting for…
The GD67 incorporates the use of a joystick to select the menu and serves as the main function selector or scrolling tool. The rest is simple I’m sure you’d be able to work out what the remaining buttons do… Or maybe not? LoL.
ACCESSORIES:
So
far I haven’t seen any changeable mobile covers for this phone (early days yet!) Some people may find this idea a bit tacky but I don’t mind it, the phone’s back cover is see through plastic and with the phone you get 3 colourful cardboard cut outs and a template to cut out your own picture and you put this behind the see through plastic to hide the battery (I hope I explained this right?) and it acts as a changeable back cover. I know that you can use a hands free kit (I have yet to find one). The charger end that plugs into the phone is a bit chunky but I’m not really bothered by it. To protect the area where the charger fits is an IO cover. A bit of a pain to open and close but I’m getting the hang of it. It’s very hard to explain these things so bear with my limited language LoL.
DISPLAY SETTINGS:
I like the way the phone enables you to have wallpaper/background. This can be either animated or still. Some of the ones I like are: the barking dog, kitten and goldfish although I wish these animations would move about just that little bit longer! It would have been cool to actually interact with these animals as virtual pets of some sort (I know I’m such a kid!) There is also a choice of different backgrounds also downloadable off wap sites such as: - http://wap.panasonicbox.com - http://www.picturemessaging.com/mms.asp The only few I know which are free. Hopefully more to become available as these phones become more widely used.
The phone is very colourful and gives you the option of changing the display settings to suit you. You can change the background colour out of a choice of 7 colours. You are able to set yourself a welcome greeting for when you switch the phone on. Other things changeable is the setting of the contrast, how long you want the back light to remain on and to change the animation for when the phone is turned on and off unfortunately there is only 2 to choose from or you can disable it from occurring.
TONES TONES:
The tones I have to say aren’t very impressive but with the availability of polyphonic ringtones being sent to mobiles we could get round this slight problem for you ringtone maniacs out there! You have a choice of 20 to choose from and 2 spaces to record whatever noise you wish although the outcome isn’t very good as it isn’t very loud anyway. But if you don’t wish to record anything you are left with a siren which, gets louder or a racecar zooming past (I played it in class when it was quiet – very amusing!). Overall the tones sound as though they have been recorded and aren’t very crisp so I guess 7/10 for tones.
PHONE BOOK:
I haven’t quite got round to working out how the ‘group setting’ works but apart from that you can store a lot of numbers in here. You have the option of browsing numbers, creating, and if you like adding voice commands, setting up an alert profile for certain people which is pretty cool (giving them a specific ring tone and animation/background).
GAMES:
Very important in my book (See! Still a kid at heart!). Unfortunately there are only 2! And in comparison with my friend who has 11 on his phone (I can’t recall which one) I was disappointed! Oh well no harm done, I’ll live. There is a game called ‘Atum’ which I play the most (mainly because I understand it better than the other one which just confuses me… I’ll suss it). Remember your chemistry science lessons? Basically you have to join the atoms together in a grid so that there are no loose bonds and you’ve got it! The other game called ‘Kimang’ well just use your joy stick and try get the ball to fetch the ticks in the limited time (make sense? Thought not!) HaHa! Apparently you are supposed to be able to download games into the phone but I don’t think this has been put in motion yet. The manual gives instructions on how to do it but I can’t do it nor can anybody else so it’s a waiting matter I’m afraid.
WAP:
Found it a bit hard to get to grips with but I’ve figured it out. Nothings changed – just a few spots of colour here and there for sites that enable it. By using this you can download wallpaper. Trying to get to the favourite menu was a bit tricky. You have to start the browser (you don’t even have to be connected to the server to do this) and there is a menu at the top giving you a list of options (very confusing I know but I got the hang of it). Also, beware using WAP for a long period of time will run the battery down quickly (damnit!!)
TXT MESSAGING:
Wow! This phone is a gem! My inbox gets filled up pretty quick and you will not believe this but so far I have left my messages in there without deleting them and am able to hold 65 texts so far. I do not know the maximum limit but 65 is definitely a bonus! The phone as I have said previously is able to use EMS less advanced than the new MMS (Multimedia Messaging). I haven’t been able to try this out yet but I have toyed about with the options and you can copy and paste, insert pictures, animations i.e. angry face, crying face etc. and melodies. Unlike the Nokia you are not given a limit to how much you can type up. This can either be a downer or not much of a problem. Not much of a problem for me as I can send texts free anyway HaHa! Unlucky! But before you send a text to a person the phone will state how many are being sent which isn’t too bad. Unfortunately unlike the Nokia (again… especially for you hardcore Nokia fans) texting with this phone may be a bit tough and frustrating. For example on a Nokia you press button 1 and you get the choice: A, B, C, 1. With the Panasonic to much pain and frustration you don’t get the numerical! You have to take the task of selecting the number option. I shan’t go into too much detail on this… There are too many horrible things about the messaging but if you have any questions feel free to ask. I’m just saying this is a great leap from a simple phone so be prepared! Also, when you send a message it is then saved in your outbox.
On the speaking side I’m going to be a bit mean. I can hardly hear a thing when taking a call. The volume is on full blast but maybe I’m deaf. I find it helps to use the hands free option, which puts the speaker on speakerphone. Apart from that the quality is good. And I’ve found that I have better reception with this phone and my Nokia 5110 than any of my previous phones.
Phew! That wasn’t so bad now was it? If only I could write like this for my history essays LoL. Other nifty things this phone has are the: Scheduler, Voice Memo Play (woo-hoo a little snippet of conversation can be recorded), Clock Function, Calculator, Currency Converter, Quiet Mode (HINT: Hold down the Hash key), Media Folders (to keep pictures, animations and melodies), and the traditional locking of the keys.
Well I think I’ve just about covered everything. Overall it is a really good phone and a new experience for me! I only rate it 4/5 because there are some things which are just too much hassle. This phone could be improved. Its incredibly light and I fell in love with it instantly, I hope you do too! It’s not as up to date as the other expensive phones on the market with digital cameras and such but if you want a change from your colourless mobile then this phone will be great.
