My Motorola T191 was broken (just outside the warranty) so I had to get a new phone. I browsed the various web sites….Orange, Vodaphone, Argos, index, T-Mobile, The Carphone Warehouse. I was looking for 3 main things, a phone that can hold more than 10 text messages, capacity for more than 100 phone numbers and polyphonic ringtones.

I was with T-Mobile so checked their web site first, but they had nothing affordable that I liked. I also visited The Carphone Warehouse and neither did they.

Then I remembered Virgin, after browsing for a while I found just the phone at the right price. It cost me £99.99 with £15 airtime and I am delighted with it.

You manoeuvre round the menu using a joystick, which can actually move faster than I am expecting it, shooting past the particular choice I want which can be a pain but I can live with that.

The phone is not very large and extremely light almost toy like. It’s a trendy silver and grey colour with quite a large screen which shows up to 5 lines of a text. The back cover comes off and you can put on of the 6 pictures in or customise your own using the template.

Here are some of the features:

It’s got a colour screen with a choice of 18 idle screen pictures ranging from a kitten to golf, from a puppy to a clock, another clock to a racing car. I use the kitten one and when I unlock the keypad or come out of the menu, the kitten chases a butterfly, cute.

The polyphonic ringtones are fun, but the phone is never that loud, well not as loud as my last phone anyway. There is a choice of 20 ringtones already in the phone and you can record 2 of your own and have them sound for text, voicemail or call. I have recorded ‘You have a message, you have a voicemail message’ I played it back at work today and they were all rolling around laughing, it sounds great. I might just say ring ring into the phone and set it for my calls. I just want to see peoples faces on the bus when my phone rings…..he he he. You can also compose melodies if you are musically minded, I’m not.

The phone does vibrate and this is set using the hash key, although if you want the phone to vibrate only, then you have to turn the volume down using the menu. Once the vibrate mode is on, you cannot adjust the ring volume, it seems to lock you out.

I wanted a phone which held more than 10 text messages, at the moment I have 22 in my inbox and 11 in my outbox. Your outgoing messages are stored in the outbox as soon as they are sent, I like this idea. Texting is quite easy, I say this because I always have trouble learning the texting on new phones, you can access text messages by using the off button or using the menu options. The phone does do predictive texting and it’s very easy to get capital letters or numbers and even easier to access punctuation by using either the menu or press the no 1 key and scroll through that way. When the inbox/outbox is full, the envelope with stay permanently on screen.

The phone will hold 100 phone numbers, but as I got mine from Virgin, the sim card will hold another 200 numbers so that’s ample for anyone I should think. You can set up voice commands in the phone book if you would rather shout at your phone when you want a number, not great for me when I am on the bus.

There are only 2 games on the phone and as I am not bothered by the games it’s not a problem, but if you like your games, then this phone is not for you.

There is a clock and alarm, a calculator and currency converter, there is a divert calls option, you can set the phone to power off and back on saving the battery overnight. If you set the alarm, you can set it for a daily alarm or just once, you can also have one of the 22 tones to wake you including the ones you record yourself, you could record yourself singing ‘get up, get up, get out of your lazy bed’ and then set the alarm.

There is a calendar option where you can set reminders for holidays, birthdays, hospital appointments any thing you like, it’s really easy, you pick the day you want to set the reminder, chose create from the menu and enter the time. Chose the repeat type, Once-Yearly-Weekly or daily. Then type your reminder message, you also have the option to put a phone number in if your reminder is to ring someone. It’s just as easy to delete a reminder.

The web is accessible from this phone, but I never use it and have never tried, so sorry but I can’t comment on this feature.

The phone has a quick charger and charges in approx 90 minutes and the battery will last for quite a long time even when used heavily. But I will say that when the battery in almost flat, it doesn’t beep intermittently like most phones, it just switches off which can be a pain. The charger is very light so easy to carry around, just not much use on the bus is it? There is a little flip lid at the base to remove when charging the phone, I can’t get on with this and am convinced I am going to break it.

The phone came with the usual handsfree kit, but it also has a speaker phone built in, once a call is made or received you can put the speakerphone on. i have ised it to listen to, but not to speak into, however it very clear when you record your own voice so I suspect it will be the same for holding a conversation, or at least similar.

All in all it’s a nice phone and as I learn more about it I will add to this op.

Hope it’s helped someone in their quest for a mobile phone.

Many thanks for reading.
