I’ve survived for quite awhile without having an extra bulge in my pocket, a mobile phone (the other bulge being my wallet of course), but there got to a point where too many friends had moaned at me for not being able to get in touch, and I needed something to calm my parents down when I go to gigs in the evening. I had a mobile phone which I hadn’t used for years, I only got that one in the first place cuz at the time it was 'cool'. At the time. & that phone just wouldn’t fit in my pocket, as the wallet took up most the room (yes I know, lets just pretend there’s only one pocket on my trousers :P)
My birthday is near Christmas so expensive gifts always come at the end of each year, so I started a count down till December (only 11 months to go, etc), but last week by friend offered me his phone for a very generous irrefutable price, so good a price that my parents lent me the money for it (my friend wanted this months latest phone so he wanted to get rid of his current one) & yesterday I bought it off him - a 'Panasonic GD67', don’t know what it means but who could say no the sexy-looking phone.
He had charged the phone up for
me (normally it would take 24 hours before first use) and I had to buy a top up card because I don’t think the phone will receive incoming calls until there is some evidence that the phone will be topped up at least once in its lifetime. I’m sure some shops give free top upcards with the phone itself, so its worth checking out different phone retailers. As well as the charger, booklets & SIM card the phone also came with some strange phone-shaped cards. These cards go on the back of the phone so you can personalise it a bit or draw 'humorous' pictures on them to impress your friends. Naturally.
The phone is very light, and I think its half the size of the previous one I had, its certainly not a size that can be laughed at. The first thing I noticed was the 'joystick' thing in the middle, this basically acts as 5 buttons - up, down, left, right & can be pushed down to select things. Although its original & saves space, it can be very annoying when it goes up too many times when your selecting something or trying to play a game. It does mean less pressing you’re thumb down all the time though.
The phone is a colour phone, and can receive images, animations and some sound files (midis, unfortunately it cant receive mp3s or songs :o( ), the ring tones on the phone are 'Polyphonic' which means they sound nicer than standard ring tones. You can also record your own ring tone on the composer or by recording your voice (up to about 30 seconds). The is a headphone socket on the side of the phone, but this unnecessary because you can turn sounds off and put vibrations on.
When you switch the phone on and enter your PIN you are greeted with a Panasonic logo with a colour background, followed by your network logo and then a screen the time in the middle, power in the top left, signal in the top right, and at the bottom are shortcuts to text messages, menu and phone book. If you go onto the menu there are 9 colour icons; Personalise, Phonebook, Games, Browser, Key Guard, Messages, My services, Schedule and Applications.
'Personalise' allows you change display and language settings, change compose and record ring tones, and basically anything else setting-related such as sound and media.
The 'Phone Book' lets you sort your friends names and numbers into groups. You can save them onto the SIM card, but the mobile itself hold up to 300 entries. I find the mobile phonebook easy to browse through so I keep my friends in there, as the SIM phonebook comes with important information numbers stored in such as check balance and voicemail.
The 'Games' section is a let down. You would have thought that a colour phone with a joystick would have an exiting game built in, but instead there are two very basic games and you cant download any games, although there might be some game screens on the WAP mini-internet.
The 'Browser' is the WAP browser, I’m still trying to get to grips with it but basically there its a bit like a mini-internet you get from your phone. You dial up and use one of the pages from the list, such as 'entertainment, 'information', or depending on the network, there will be homepage which will probably have a link to a search engine on it somewhere.
'Key Guard' lets you lock the phones, just like the Nokia’s 'lock keys' function.
The 'Messages section' is where you can saves end and receive text messages, you can also add picture and some sound files as mentioned earlier. The phone stores quite a lot of messages, so unless your really popular you wont have to delete messages too soon!
'My Services' is a section supplied by your network, I’m on O2, and there services page has customer care, RAC breakdown numbers and other useful numbers, as well as some of the numbers stored on the SIM Phonebook in the phonebook section.
The 'Schedule' is a handy calendar which allows you to store notes about important dates & you can set the phone to alert you at that certain date, (for the guys: if you have a wife don’t tell her about this feature cuz it can be used to remind you when birthdays are :s).
The final section is the 'applications' which has a link to the games section but also lets you set you clock, set an alarm on the clock, and also has a basic calculator and currency converter, as well as a 'Phone option' pages which has call service, call divert, security and network selection.
Another key point is you can use the mobile to phone people! Sooner or later some companies going to forget that key feature. Actually I cant see any holes to speak into, but some how the person on the other end can actually hear you.
So is it worth buying? Well I got it cheap and I’m happy, but I’m sure its worth the full price (about £90-100 I think) on pay as you go, from post phone shops. I have an O2 SIM card which gives me a number of free texts and WAP minutes when I top up (only once per top up per month though) so you might want to find out about O2's deals on the phone.
