When we first started living together, like a lot of other people, we had a lot of essentials to get and not a lot of money to spend. We bought the best we could afford on our limited budget with the intention of replacing each item in turn when we could afford better. The Panasonic KX TCD735 was the best bargain we could find as it is a good quality phone with lots of high tech abilities included and it was cheap on eBay at £40. It has actually turned out to be one of our best bargains and we no longer intend to change it; in fact we bought a second.
The Panasonic KX TCD735
This is a cordless phone/answering machine with a hand free operation. The hand free is accessible from both the handset and the base unit. You also have the option of using headphones which is useful if you are on the phone while typing on your PC (although this can cause some very minor buzzing on the line). The handset also has a belt clip which is mightily useful if you need to be in the garden, garage etc but are expecting a call, it operates to around 50 metres of the base unit when indoors but further when outdoors although our garden isn't all that big. Another very useful thing is its ability to call the other handset - great when you want your partner to come to bed! You can have up to 4 units connected and can conference call with them.
It looks quite nice if you like functional styling and would fit in at work as well as at home. It comes in a mid silvery grey trimmed with a very dark grey. The handset is very light (154 g) and feels more like a mobile phone than a traditional cordless. The phone can also be wall mounted if you choose but we haven't.
The line quality of this phone is phenomenal, as I said if it is right next to the PC you can sometimes get a very minor buzzing, although the only reason this is noticeable is because the line is usually as clear as a bell. The answering machine is digital and its recordings are also of a very high quality so you don't have to replay the message several times to catch details such as numbers or directions.
Details about the phone
In the box you get the: Hand set Base unit, Ac adaptor Telephone line cord 2 rechargeable batteries, Handset cover Belt clip Telephone plug Wall mount
1) The handset. Right at the top front of the phone is the receiver. Under this is the display screen which is clear and easy to read. Under the screen are 3 buttons which are (from left to right); the phone book, the redial/pause and function/ok.
the next 2 buttons are set to the side of the face and consist of the talk and power/off buttons. Below these is a navigator key which has 4 directions (left, right, up, down). On either side of this are the speaker phone button and the clear button. Then you have the key pad which has a traditional layout 1-9 in rows of three with the zero in the centre of the 4th row, on either side of the zero are the *and # keys. Right at the bottom are the recall button and the intercom button..
2) The base unit
The handset fits on the left of the unit and under this is the speaker. The sound reproduction from this is good, both on speakerphone and on the answering machine messages. Next to the cradle for the handset is the display screen, this again is clear and easy to read. Under this are 6 buttons, from left to right: answer on, memo button, greeting, stop and new message. Beneath the first 5 buttons is the key pad which is laid out the same as on the handset.
Beneath the sixth button are a column of buttons which control (from top to bottom) the recall button, cancel button, redial/pause and the mute button which has an LED indicator which illuminates when it is on. Adjacent to these buttons are the caller ID indicator and the in use indicator. On the far right at the top is a navigator button with 4 way keys as in the handset. Under this are the clear button and the phonebook/function button. Below these are the page/intercom button and the hand set select button. In the bottom right corner is a chunky triangular button which operates the speakerphone; this also has an indicator.
All of the buttons feel good and depress cleanly, they are large enough to make it unlikely you will hit the wrong one. They are laid out well. The backlit displays are customisable to a choice of colours, green, orange and red, I use green but I wish there was a blue choice. All the buttons make the phone look difficult to use but it isn't. It comes with an excellent manual which takes you through every step and you can do most things from either the handset or the base unit but you can only use one of them at the same time. The phone needs fully charging prior to use (which takes 15 hours so there is ample time to read the guide.
the basic operation of the phone is easy and just a matter of picking up the handset and pressing the talk key then the numbers and to answer a call you again just pick up the handset and press the talk key although you can set the phone to any key answer. To end the call you place the handset back on the base or press the off button. You can also use the base unit to make calls using the speaker hone without lifting the handset.
3) The answering machine.
This has 2 prerecorded messages and you can also record your own. It will add the date and time of the call as long as you set those details in the phone. You have the ability to remotely access the answering machine so you can check messages when away from home; when on holiday for example. You are also able to record a telephone call which is great if someone id giving you directions or quotes etc,
4) Other useful functions
Redial It will automatically store the last 10 numbers you have dialed which is very useful Ring tones You have a choice of 20 ring tones. When you enter numbers into the address book you put them into categories and you can then identify a particular ring tone or back light colour. For example my mobile, my partners mobile, our parents and very close friends have a separate ring tone and the backlight is red. Other friends acquaintances have a different ring and are orange, other calls are green with a different ring tone. This makes it very easy to decide if you want to answer before you even get out of your chair. Phone book You can store up to 200 numbers in the handset book. Any number that is stored in the book will add the name into the display when they ring you as well as flash the colour choice and use the selected ring tone. you can also store 20 in the base unit. You can copy numbers from the handset phone book to the base unit phonebook simply without having to enter all the details twice. Hot keys Using this enables you to store up to 9 numbers that you can dial with just one key and to make a call using this its just a matter of pressing and holding that key in. the hot keys are the numbers 1-9 Alarm function with a choice of rings, this can be set to go off at different times throughout the day with different rings to jog your memory Restricted digits This is useful to useful to exclude premium numbers for example.
My opinion
All in all this is an excellent telephone and I don't have a bad word to say about it. I would highly recommend it. It does everything well. The calls have excellent clarity. The phone facilities are easy to use and there are plenty of them but they are all useful and not gimmicks that you will never use. If you come across one of these my advice would be to buy it.
Advantages: Jam Packed Full Of Features, Has Answer Machine Disadvantages: A Bit Pricey
The Panasonic KX-TCD735 has been my constant indoor companion for about the last 12 months. It cost me about £130 to buy and although that sounds a bit expensive just for a phone it really is worth its money.
The phone consists of two parts. The Base Station and the Hand Set - from here in known as the BS & the HS! If you can make out the picture which Ciao put along side the title then you can see that the HS slots into the BS. The BS can be either ... ...rarely touch the BS.
Panasonic certify that this phone is Caller ID Compatible. However, they only state that it is compatible with BT's Caller ID system. I do know though that it is also compatible with the NTL system as I am on NTL and have the Caller ID service (please take the time to read my NTL op when you have the chance - thanks).
Now, this isn't just a phone. It's a phone and an answering machine as well. The answering machine has about ...

Advantages: Bristling with features Disadvantages: Err... doesn't audio stamp date/time on answerphone messages
Have been using one of these as my main home landline phone for quite a few months now. I bought it for about £150 from Argos.
You can control just about everything from the handset, including full access to the answering machine. The menu system is driven by scrolling a four-way rocker key up and down to choose menu items; right to go into sub-menus or to confirm input and left to go back a level. Sometimes you have to press other keys to confirm ... ...is ok once you get used to it. You get three lines on the display. Setting base station functions (other than phonebook entries) from the handset normally means referring to the manual as they’re driven by keying in sequences of numbers. The manual is very well written though, with step by step illustrated examples of all functions. Control of the answering machine from the handset is made easier as the symbols for the functions are printed underneath ...

...for then don't!
The panasonic KX-TCD735 is crammed with useful features to make your time spent using your phone an absolute joy. A bit over the top I know - but I spend a lot of time on the phone and wanted one that does the job well. I forked out my £119 pounds at Currys, brought it home, and couldn't wait to get started. Only trouble was I had to...... the thing needed fully charging before I could even consider playing with the ring tone options ... ...calls – get a cheaper phone – if you want to use your phone as tool and get the most out of today’s technology then get a Panasonic KX-TCD735 and you won’t regret it. By the way – if you’ve read this all the way to the end thank you! ...

Advantages: Good quality Disadvantages: buttons sometimes freeze/stick
really love this phone as I have had it now just over a year. It is a cordless phone which means I can walk around using it. For me this is ideal as when I'm working in the office I can look for files while I chat! It plugs into the base and so charges the phone for you. The phone has an answering machine which you can record your own message onto and this is simple to do just press the silver button in the corner and you're away! Its easy to listen ... ...which will flash when you have a message. Simply press the play button and it will go through the message you can either delete them by pressing the button with a cross by it or just leave it if you want to save the message! You can skip through the messages by pressing the left or right arrow buttons. The quality is not brilliant when people leave messages but Its good enough that you know what people are saying, it can just sometimes sound as though ...

Manufacturer's product description
Finally, the digital cordless DECT phone arrives - like this Panasonic KX-TCD735 - and you can move without buzzing. Apart from improved reception you can also make internal calls from one handset to another and even have conference calls between an external number and two handsets. Panasonic added some of the elements of a mobile phone to the KX-TCD735, so it is small and light. This DECT phone features are 160 hours standby, 20 hours talk time, and a 50 number call log. You can have up to 6 handsets working from the same base unit. This phone also features speakerphone on the handset, backlit LCD-display with choice of 3 background colors, calendar, phonebook for 200 names and numbers, digital answering machine for 15 minutes and second display on the base. This makes the Panasonic KX-TCD735 good for a small to medium business as a fully integrated internal/external phone system.
