We have owned a speaker-phone for many years but never really found the voice quality and reception very good at all. In fact I would say it was practically impossible!
At the time we had bought one of the most expensive models we could find thinking it would give the best sound quality through the speakers and microphone, at best the caller's voice was muffled and the microphone would only pick up our voice if we stayed within about a foot of it and spoke more or less into the microphone. Not good at all when wanting to have a telephone conversation at the same time as preparing a meal.
After a bit of research on-line and visiting a friend of ours who already owned a Panasonic cordless phone, we decided to get the Panasonic KX-TG8324E. This is a set of 4 cordless dect phones, and we are not disappointed with the results.
Setting the phones up was simplicity itself. I simply took them out of their packaging, plugged the main base unit into the mains and phone line, put the two rechargeable AAA batteries into the handset and stood it in the docking station of the main base unit, and within 5 minutes it was charged enough to send and receive calls, and to set up the answer machine outgoing message.
Each of the other 3 handsets has its own docking station that plugs into the mains and will keep the batteries topped up when not in use. There is no connection with these units required to a phone line as they communicate with the base station via digital radio waves. I found the signal extremely strong from one end of my house to the other and out into the garden.
To test the unit's hands-free clarity I went outside and called my wife from my mobile phone. From my mobile I could hear her absolutely clearly even when she crossed to the other side of the room and had her back to the handset, which was stood up on the desk. She reported that she could hear me just as clearly through the speaker of the handset too. So I have to give Panasonic a 10 out of 10 for the call quality of the phone.

Phone Book Entries
It took me about 5 minutes to enter in my phonebook entries into one unit. I entered the person's name and telephone number and then took the option to send it to all four base units.
Answer Phone
There is already a greeting (outgoing message) in the telephone and this can be left to answer calls when you're not available if required, but I wanted to enter my own message and all I had to do was to select "Record Greeting", spoke my message into either of the 4 handsets and selected OK. The phone played it back to me, to ensure I was satisfied. If I had needed to change it I could just have started recording again with a different message.
Memo Alarm
This is another feature that I was particularly impressed with. I simply had to enter the date and time I wished the alarm to sound and select OK. The alarm would sound for around 3-4 minutes.
Text Messaging
SMS messaging is for sending and receiving texts, but this is something I don't use on the KX-TG824E because I already have this on my mobile phone, but it is handy if you don't have a mobile or would like another source to send and receive texts messages.
Some of the Other Features
The display screen is a cool blue colour and there are many other different wallpapers you can use. You can also set up to 20 different ringtones, from an ordinary bell sound to different types of music.
If like me you feel that night time is for sleeping only, you can set each individual handset to "night mode", where you put in the time when you want the instrument to stop ringing and when you want it to start again. All calls then are picked up on the answer-machine feature of the KX-TG824E.
From each handset you can call any of the other handsets. Our model it the KX-TG824E, meaning we have the 4-handset system. Each handset is numbered from 1 - 4, and you simply press the handset's number and then the call button.
There is also KX-TG82E (3-handset system), KX-TG822E (2-handset system), KX-TG821E (1 handset system).
If you wish to attach a headset to any of the handsets, Panasonic recommends the optional KX-TCA 94, which plugs connects via the headset socket situated on the side of any of the handsets. These are around £25. Each handset comes with a belt clip, so using the headset with the handset clipped to your belt is very easy.
Overall, these phones are absolutely great and I must admit they are the best speaker phones I have ever used, so I must give an overall 10 out of 10 for quality and user-friendliness.
There are some good deals on the KX-TG824E series of dect phone from just under £100, which to me seems like excellent value at more or less, £25 per handset..
Additional Information
Another user has just asked how the phones would work if there is a lot of clutter...
Well, we are rather cluttered here, particularly with a TVs in each room and other electrical goods and these phones work as if there is nothing there. I have one hand-set right next to my computer that is connected to a router, and there is no interference whatsoever.
