At the Lincoln High School Music Dept., the NV-DS27 has had some very thorough testing. It is one of the two cameras owned by the department, and are used frequently for filming of music concerts, assessments and other events. I was one of the technicians using the camera.
The DS27 is a very versatile camera. It has all the features needed for home use, including 400x Digital Zoom, 2.5" Color LCD monitor, zoom mic, 0 lux night shot, image stabilizer, and color viewfinder. It also has digital effects options, as well as being able to take stillshots onto the SD Memory card.
It is very compact. Its small size was a drawback for professional use; when needing to use different options quickly, the buttons are very small and fiddly to use. The size would be of advantage to a home user, however, since it is very light and compact. The camera has a strong and durable case, made of light aluminium.
It is VERY EASY to use. Color GUI menus greet you when choosing options, and there is a nice scrolling knob which allows you to move between menu options, and selecting them by pressing it down. One finger operation, for many options. However these menus aren't very practical when you need to use something in a hurry, but that would only matter in pro applications. There are a lot of automatic functions, including Zoom Mic and Program AE. It also has some more advanced options, like manual audio level, manual focus, night shot and sensor triggered recording.
Editing is not possible without specialist equipment, as there is no built-in feature. Still picture capture can be achieved using DV Studio 2 on PC. The camera can be connected by serial port or SD Card adapter.
The picture quality is comparable to that of other home video cameras. It is not really good enough for professional use, but would be more than adequete for home filming. The sound quality is excellent, with PCM stereo recording, and built in stereo mics with zoom. An option to cut wind noise, for outdoor filming, is also inclided. A small sound monitor speaker is also built in, for replaying films on the spot.
There are several effects which can be used, too. It also allows you to change or add an effect later on(not recording the effect on tape.) This allows you to choose the effect later, and add it on while dubbing and editing the final tape. It also saves mistakes if you need an effect only for a certain scene, and forget to change it back to normal.
The DS27 is very good value for money. Even though it is more to the lower end of the range, it still has many good features. You only miss out on a few features, and get it for a much lower price than other cameras. It would be a perfect camera to film a vacation or other outdoor activity, as it is small and compact, yet very versatile.
Advantages: Build quality, reliability, size, performance Disadvantages: non really, it is what it is for the price, a point and shoot camcorder with brilliant imaging
...equipment and have about six Panasonic items in the house. All of these purchases have been researched using sites like this and Which magazine.
Panasonic always seem to come out best as they did with this camcorder.
I liked the size (although they are even smaller now 2 0r 3 years on!) and the flip out lcd screen is kinda cool but I don't use much because it drains the battery that bit faster and I have seen clearer screens on different makes. ... ...has an easy to use menu system for setting the camcorder up to tour own specific settings like Widescreen mode if you have a widescreen TV.
It has Program modes which I suppose would be useful but I tend to keep it in Auto which is fine for day to day use.
It has a Manual focus setting for if the autofocus struggles with certain conditions like high contrast scenes but I have never had to use it.
Another rather cool setting is the 0 Lux Night ...

Advantages: Good reproduction Disadvantages: Reliability very poor
Having had the NV-DS27B now for 7 years, I am about to change it. The reliability of the unit has always been poor, I have had the unit breakdown now on 5 occasions, twice under the warrantee and 2 subsequent breakdowns under the extended warrantee. I can not faultier the quality of the reproduction, but it is just unreliable.
The slow start up speed is a problem when wanting to use the camera very quickly.
