Having not owned a camcorder before I decided that now was the time jump into the market, I was looking for a resonably priced digital camcorder that would also take still pictures (to kill two birds with one stone so I did not need to buy a seperate digital camera). After looking round on the internet and collating all the technical specifications and prices the best value for money product appeared to the Panasonic NV DS55B, I wanted a good quality mid range digital camcorder, but without going into the upper range which has numerous extra facilities which generally don't really get used. One other criteria was that it was reasonably small and compact. The NV DS55B appeared to fit the bill so off I went and purchased one. The camera came in a very comprehensive package, with all the additional cables you could ever need for connection to video recorder or PC, it also came with additional software and cable for transferring the still shots from tape or card to the PC. The instruction booklet again was comprehensive and very simple, individual steps were accompanied by useful diagrams and each step took up half a page making it very straightforward to pick up the basics and then move onto the more complex functions. Picture quality is excellent and the zoom facility is truly brilliant (15xzoom, with upto 150x digital zoom). The camera has a very clear 2.5" viewing screen. The on screen menu is very well laid out and extremely simple to use, this provides numerous features, too many to go into in a short piece like this. The only downside to this camera is that is a relatively new product and when I called enquiring about add-ons, I was told that they would not be available for a couple of months, they should be available anytime now. The proof of the pudding of my decision to buy is when a number of friends who already have camcorders have commented on the quality of the camera.
Advantages: Both a Digital Video and Digital Still Camera with great quality Disadvantages: It takes you a few sessions to fully understand all features
...camera. When we found the Panasonic NV DS55B we were in luck! It is compact and comfortable to use. We are not impulse buyers and spent many weeks looking, trying, picking the brains of sales staff, borrowing various camcorders from people to try them out, reading Which magazine reports etc. Welove this camcorder and have been using it for three years now. It came with absolutely everything we needed. All cables for transfer to video, recharger, ... ...for printing and editing etc. The instruction booklet that comes with it is very clear with pictures to aid you. It has a remote control facility so you can stay seated and edit film on your TV. We have travelled abroad a lot and it always goes with us. We also have grandchildren so we have taken hours of footage and hundreds of photos. Whilst standing at the top of the Empire State building NYC, we changed the zoom to it's maximum and had really ...

Advantages: Small, compact and easy to use. Disadvantages: Unreliable and faulty
When we first got this camera I loved it. It's really easy to use, the zoom is great on it, and it's easy enough to link to the pc for recording still images and videos. It has some great features including sepia recording. The battery life is fairly good compared with previous camcorders used.
However we only had this camera six months and it went faulty. It had to be sent away twice before it was repaired. Since then over the four years of ownership ...
