Manufacturer's product description
Panasonic camcorders are designed for simple and intuitive operation. Control buttons are integrated within the LCD display, and can be operated with one hand. The subject can therefore be kept in the viewfinder while settings are being changed. The NV-GS17 is fitted with a 24x zoom. Because the zoom lenses are optical, they record both movies and still pictures with equally outstanding quality. This performance is to be found in a surprisingly compact and ultra-light housing of only 410 grams, enabling the camcorder to be taken anywhere.
Advantages: Good quality, lots of functions, easy to use Disadvantages: No scart converter, price variances.

This was difficult to find at an electrical retailer and without it you are unable to payback on most moder TV's. When I contacted Panasonic they were extremely uninterested in my comments.
It is also worth shopping around as the price varied by a much as £100 with the big retailers giving the worse deals....

...I was recently looking for a digital camera, now I have found it, the PanasonicNV-DCF7E is the perfect digital camera.
I uses a 8 mb memory card which can be removed and you can insert another one and carry on taking photos.
This digital camera simply connects to your pc via a serial interface and all you have to do is upload your photos from the camera onto your hard-drive.
The PanasonicNV-DCF7E has a 1..8" TFT LCD monitor which is perfect to view existing photos on your memory card.
This camera is fairly small, 118 mm x 66 mm x 52 mm and it is very light, approx. 370 g.
There's room for two CompactFlash cards at the same time in the PanasonicNV-DFC7E. The 1.3 megapixel camera can take still pictures....
