Advantages: Easy to use, small semi-professional cam Disadvantages: No wide angle, not good in low light conditions
The semi professional Panasonic NV MX500 is an easy to use digital videocam.
In daylight the picture quality is excellent, there is a backlight function and a optical image stabilizer. The LDC screen is big. For nightshots or indoors where light is limited the picture quality decreases significantly, much poorer than the analog videocam I had before. This is a disappointing feature on an expensive videocamera like this.

Sometimes I find that the camera does not stop filming imediately when I hit the stop recording button. This has given me a lot of clips that end with the movement when I put down the camera after filming a shot. This is also worse than the analog camera I had before.
The optical zoom is 10x, which feels a bit too little. Another disadvantage is that the widest angle is very narrow, so when trying to do "interview style" shots you end up too far away from the person filmed to avoid just having their nose on the film.
The camera has a 16 MB memory stick for digital photos, I found it difficult to switch between the video function and photo function.
I recommend the camera for outdoor filming or filming in good light, but definitely not for limited light conditions without an extra light source.
The NV-MX500 is the first camcorder to feature 3.0 megapixel still picture recording. This model also incorporates a high-resolution Leica Dicomar lens. The NV-MX500's Leica lens is equipped with the "MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer", which provides superb stabilizing power during shooting of still pictures. The camcorder also features a USB terminal, a DV terminal, and a digital still picture terminal for PC connectivity. To make shooting as easy and comfortable as possible, the body size is extremely compact for a 3CCD camera, and the NV-MX500 is supplied with a "free-style" remote control to improve operation under a variety of shooting conditions, and a free-style grip belt that also serves as a carrying strap.
