Manufacturer's product description
The 4,000-lumen, 1-chip DLP system has further increased image quality and overall system efficiency. Panasonic's DLP system projectors have taken another step forward. Now they produce even better images while maintaining all of their highly reliable functions. Visibility has been improved in rooms with the lights turned on, and durability has been increased with the AC lamp. The PT-D4000E offers 4,000 lumens of brightness, thanks to the newly developed AC lamp and more efficient reflectors and synthetic mirror. Real-life images are also produced in rooms with the lights turned on.
Advantages: Works in relatively bright conditions, quiet Disadvantages: unreliable, very big, short bulb life
...Updated review.
I have been using the PanasonicPT AX 100E as my main TV, in conjunction with a freeview box and a DVD player, for just over a year now. I paid £900 for it then, but the price has dropped and even the improved PT AX200 can now be bought for about £700. The reason for the low rating is because of it's unreliability and Panasonic's inability to fix it when it went wrong, as described below. In all other respects it is a very good projector.
The picture quality is extremely good in a dark room and quite watchable during the day even with the curtains open for all but the darkest movies. In bright conditions the colours can become a little washed-out although there are various viewing options on the remote control to compensate a little. For some very dark films however you should wait until the room can be blacked out...

Advantages: No screen door effect, high contrast ratio, cinema colour, quiet, all the inputs you need Disadvantages: there really are no significant disadvantages
...The PanasonicPT-AE900 projector is the latest and most impressive projector in the award winning PT-AE series. It is a true high definition progressive scan 16:9 projector with a native resolution of 1280 by 720. This liquid crystal display projector challenges the picture quality; smoothness and contrast of the more expensive digital light processing models. The on screen image can truly be described as cinema quality.

...with no problems, although having said that the walls are freshly painted and we don't smoke. The picture brightness is fine, but then we watch it mostly in the evenings with the curtains drawn anyway.
We have also scorned a bracket, preferring the flexibility of being able to watch the picture on different walls and in different rooms. It takes about 5 minutes to set up so that the picture is a good size and square, we often use a table and a telephone book.
The projector:
Overview
This is a projector that has already reached the end of its shelf life in the shops, Replaced by the Panasonic AE500 and then the AE700 as the technology has moved onwards and upwards it is probably only available discounted now. Mine certainly was, an ex-display model with 300hours on the clock (there is a built in timer accessed from the main menu so that you can...
