I eventually removed the circuit board and repaired the auto reverse switch (a spring was out of alignment).
Having taken the cassette player to bits I now realise that this is designed as a throw away unit. It?s certainly not very robust and I would not recommend the unit for young children for this reason. Panasonic used to be a quality manufacturer, now it seems they are looking at cost cutting savings resulting in lower quality units.
