Advantages: The best bread you will ever taste, on a timer just ready in time for breakfast. Disadvantages: If you can't wait since it smells so good... you might burn your fingers like me!

This Panasonic SD 254 bread maker was a spur-of-the-moment impulse buy from Macro when it was on special offer about a year ago, for £50. My mother needs to eat a gluten-free diet which means she cannot eat regular bread but with this machine she has been able to create loaves both from a gluten-free bread book and also just herself from the skill she has honed with this machine. I have tried both the shop bought and homemade wheat-free bread and there is no comparison, hands down the Panasonic SD 254 wins.
When purchased the box was extremely heavy as this machine contains a lot of mixing equipment which has been cast in metal to make it will last under the pressure of mixing thick dough. Protected by polystyrene box inserts the machine came along with a small measuring cup, spoon and the usual user's guide as well as a warranty card. An excellent touch was the simple Panasonic Bread Cookbook which has now found itself well and truly thumbed as the recipes it contains make the best tasting bread I have ever had.
For making regular bread loaves I have found the pleasure of this machine to be exquisite. Admittedly due to laziness I only really have this machine ready and set on the timer to make bread for a Sunday morning. On Saturday night before going to bed I pour all the ingredients into the metal bread tin that slots into the actual maker, making sure to add them in the right order which is the most important part of using a bread maker. Once ingredients are in place I simply slot the bread-pan into the machine, twist it into place then close the lid and used the digital controls to start making the bread.
This machine has a timer and so if the bread takes four hours as my favourite recipes does, the machine can be set to start making bread at 7am to be ready for a 9am breakfast during a Sunday morning long lie.
The supplied bread cook book that comes with the machine gives recipes for all sorts of bread to pastries and speciality loafs such as gingerbread. I ordered a bread maker cookbook for £9.99 of Amazon but have to admit I flicked through it and used one recipe then went back to Panasonic's own free cookbook since it excellent.
I have found few issues with this machine other than the fact that the bread smells so good I often find I cannot wait for it and end up burning my fingers on the bread tin when I try to remove the bread before it has cooled properly, but then this is hardly a manufacturer?s design fault!
The white-bread large loaf that I always tend to make is delicious when made with Hovis Strong White Bread Flour and usually lasts about two days before going stale. Unlike shop bought bread, home made loafs do not have lots of preservatives and so need eating within 48 hours so they don't go hard. In a household with parents and kids though you'll be lucky if it lasts that long, especially if little fingers are massacring the loaves into thick doorstep sandwiches.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting better quality food in their lives. I do think that it is more expensive to make your own bread maker loaves than to buy them in the supermarket but if you can afford the ingredients you will never once regret using this machine and neither will the people you share it with.
Advantages: fresh un mucked about bread Disadvantages: can take long to make if using normal programme not rapid
I recently bought this for myself as i wanted to started making my own bread/cakes buns from scratch. This machine came highly recommened and it didnt fail to impress me. Very easy to use with a little bit of practise, oh and not forgetting to put the kneeding blade before adding ingrediants etc.. helps !! At first using the normal programme for medium white loaf seemed to go on forever as it does take 4 hours. But i highly recommend using the fast ... ...there is a timer feature on it which means you can set it to start say before you get up in the morning so you can wake up to the lovely smell of freash bread, but is that a good idea because you will just want to eat it all ! I find using the fast bake option more than adequate for general sandwich bread , and i have made gingerbread in it also. As i have only had it for two weeks so far i havent quite got round to trying any of the other programmes ...

Advantages: Easy to use, great results Disadvantages: Can be difficult to turn out loaf
I bought this breadmaker at the beginning of December, not having owned a breadmaker before and I am very happy with it.
It is simple to use, easy to clean and produces very nice bread. The instructions are clear and there are lots of receipes included in the instruction manual - the French bread and Brioche are favourites in my house! The crust is good - I always use the dark setting which gets a great result. Its also a really nice feeling to ... ...that you know exactly what is in the bread, which as a new parent has become very important to me.
The timer is easy to use and you can set it to up 13 hours ahead - which makes it easy to set it so you have fresh bread for the morning.
The paddle doesn't make too much of a hole in the base and the texture of the loaves is excellent.
I've used to make dough for pizza bases as per the instruction manual and it turned out beautifully.
Only bad ...

Advantages: Produces excellent loaves. Quiet. User replaceable pan shaft assembly. Disadvantages: Very minor; Controls not intuitive
I received an SD254 for Christmas to replace an existing breadmaker with bearing & non-stick coating failures. These problems are avoided on the SD254 by an owner replaceable shaft assembly and a pan with a hard finish. Operation is quiet. Loaves look just right with an even consistency and minimal 'paddle damage'. Turn-out is clean. Instructions are clear, but indispensable initially as the control panel is not intuitive. For example, certain functions ...
