Originally designed with the business consumer in mind, the Panasonic e-wear SV-SD50 digital audio player is a self contained media player. With its flash blue and grey exterior, three small buttons on the front and a scrolling wheel stick which juts out of the side to change the tracks, it proves to be a very neat little device on looks. Although it has a small LCD screen, Panasonic has done a good job getting everything you need onto that tiny space. If you wear glasses, best to put them on when using this device and also some night vision goggles. There is no backlight for my screen so playing with the e-wear in the dark or badly lit places is a big disappointment.
The whole package comes with software (Panasonic Media Manager), USB reader/writer device and a 64mb SD (Secure Digital) media card to get you going. The software is a customized version of the popular RealOne player which you can download from the internet. It is easy to install and use with PCs running Windows Operating Systems (OS). The software is designed to convert your CD music into digital music files (MP3, WMA, AAC and Real Audio format) and organize your music and transfer them to the card using the USB reader/writer device.
The 64mb SD media card will hold about two hours of digital music. If you like bass with your music, this is the device for you. It really blasts out the bass with its S-XBS (Super Extra Bass System). I must say that this is one of the good sides of this little package. It even has an EQ playback feature for the bass which is as follows:
-Normal (Normal Sound) -S-XBS 1 (Adds Bass) -S-XBS 2 (Adds More Bass) -TRAIN (Reduces the sound i.e. if you are in a public place)
Aside from the good bass, the sound quality is nothing spectacular, nor can you complain about it. Though it would probably be better if you bought some proper headphones and put them in. The e-wear comes with the usual wire headphones, so nothing special in that department.
It also boasts an FM Radio which has okay reception rating. It is not brilliant and phases out if you go into small black spots, but if you stand in the middle of an open field with no trees and a radio mast 5 metres away, you get brilliant reception!
Like the Sony MD/MP3 players, Panasonic have finally introduced a “hold” button so that if you accidentally push any buttons, nothing will happen in “hold” mode, so you can keep the player in your pocket and not have to worry about why the music keeps skipping to different tracks.
The e-wear is powered by a single AAA battery which will power it for approximately 30 hours!
The e-wear is very easy to use and is very good but it feels like it was cheaply built and your not actually getting your moneys worth.
I haven’t tried dropping it yet but it has that ‘thin plastic feel’ where you think if e-wear meets concrete, owner feels like crying.
I bought this from Bahrain Duty Free at $120. If you want to spend that much on a media player, you don’t want to worry that it will fall apart if it bumps into its friend Mr. Concrete.
There is another product out on the market now which is the Panasonic e-wear SV-SD85 which stores up to 128mb of music, however, it costs a hefty £250. You can get cheaper products in this range out there so my suggestion is to shop around.
It is compatible with the following Operating Systems (OS):
Windows XP (Professional and Home Edition) Windows ME Windows 98/98SE Windows 2000 Professional
System Requirements: (*MINIMUM*) WINDOWS: OS as mentioned above. CPU: Pentium 233 MHz MMX, or equivalent CPU (Pentium II 333 MHz for Windows XP) RAM: 64MB (128MB for Windows XP) Hard Drive: 100MB available hard drive space for software, 200MB for music CD ROM: CD ROM drive Sound: 16-bit sound card and speakers USB: One USB port required Display: High Colour (16 bit) and 800 x 600 or more pixels.
Technical Specification Sampling Rate: 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, and 48 kHz Compression/Decompression: AAC, MP3, and WMA Frequency Response: 20-20,000 Hz (+0 dB, -6 dB) Output Level: 3.5 mW + 3.5 mW Power Supply: DC 1.5 V (one AAA alkaline battery, not included) Approximate Play Time: 31 hours with AAA alkaline battery (not included) Weight: 42g
...in the player. Alas, Panasonic insist that you use their software to transfer the files, and it stores them in SD1 format, which appears to have MP3-type headers, but won't play back in any other player that I've come across.
The LCD display is clear, but obviously limited in size, so there's no concept of scrolling down lists to choose tracks.
This player was quite expensive when I bought it, but it was worth it for the size, weight and excellent ... ...a compact player that sounds good, but I'd also recommend getting to know the software really well. I just let the software copy the files to the SD card, without setting up folders or albums, so I ended up with about 250 tracks in a single album, which makes them a lot more difficult to find.
I won't make that mistake again. ...

Advantages: Easily the best looking MP3 player available Disadvantages: Alomst TOO small!!
First of all you have to see this MP3 player to believe it. The photo doesn't do it justice. This thing is TINY!! And I mean TINY. It's the size of the christmas 1st class stamps. This thing is SO cool, everybody in the gym asks me where I got it.

The waterproof case has space for a AAA battery which extends battery life even further!!
The main reason I bought this is because of the SD capabilites. You could in theory buy a 1GB SD ...

Advantages: Tiny, can fit easily in your pocket Disadvantages: Storage is not great
When i first got my hands on this little clever mp3 player i was quietly excited. This was my first MP3 player and was really chuffed. Once i got it home i put the little memory crad which you slide in. It was easy to set up and thought i was well on my way.

Yes, 16 songs is all it holds as its quite an old unit but all works fine, volume goes up nice and loud, and all together the unit it easy to use, good to look at, and in my opinion worth the pennies you can now get them for! ...

...useless on this player. Panasonic said it has no plans to modify the software to allow the upload of legally purchased proitected files. Since the future trend is towards more slective song purchased, this is a huge drawback for usability and makes it a waste of money. I'm searching for a new player... The instructions were typical of Japanese manufactures and the operating logic is a little cumberson, typical with Panasonic electronics. Again great ...

Advantages: excellent performer, last forever Disadvantages: extra base not very effective.
I was very pleased to see the SL MP30 on this website. I still remember when i got my first paycheck at the age of 16 flicking through music catalogues looking at things to buy to fuel my passion for music, i came across lots of CD mp3 players. this was about 4years ago and the memory based Mp3 players were very rare and the memory maximum was about 64MB. That was not enough for me, i needed something to carry atleast 700mb worth of songs, i needed a CD Mp3player.
So i finnally found a sony CD mp3 player which i bought and it kept turning off every few days, it was a good player but it wasnt very reliable so i returned it hoping for a replacement. The shop did not have the same sony so they offered me the Panasonic SL MP3 CD to keep me happy, even though it was a few pounds more expensive than sony's. I took it grudgingly thinking ...
Advantages: good sound quality, good D sound anti-skip system, earphone remote control, plays mp3 and wma Disadvantages: doesn't support ID3tags
I have had the Panasonic SL SX420 for awhile now, and I am very happy with its performance. I was looking for a cd/mp3 portable player that would be sylish, with long lasting batteries and with a good anti-skip system. SL SX420 offers all of it.
The player has a similar design as other Panasoniccd players with the main function buttons (memo, mode, eq, play, stop, ff, rew, nad volume)on the front of the player. The only functions that are on the side of the cd player are hold and open button. Some of the functions (volume, hold, eq, play/stop, ff, and rew) are also on the remote control which really makes it easy to control the cd player when you have it in your pocket or in your backpack.
The sound quality of the discman is excellent and very clear. It has s-xbs, s-xbs+, live, an normal eq settings. The volume goes all the way ...
Advantages: Good basic player Disadvantages: reliability lets it down
-rechargeable batteries on mp3 songs (30 hours with CD data) which is enough for even the longest journey! An AC (230-240 V) adapter is supplied for mains use so you can listen to your mp3s for as long as your little heart desires. The problem with this is that the player is then permanently on standby, so you have to turn it off at the plug so that it is not ?live? and eating up your elecy bill. There is a little battery icon on the display so you know when its about to die on you. I?ve just been reading through the instruction booklet and just realised that you can actually recharge rechargeable batteries inside the mp3player, although I don?t have any rechargeable batteries to try this out with.
