If you're like me and prefer handling your music rather than merely transferring data, (geez, I'd be up for a portable mini vinyl deck with headphones if it was easily transportable!) this isn't a bad little runner.
The reason I purchased this ... ...at the time was the fact that it could easily play re-writable cd's, and more importantly could read mp3 data from a cd.
Not having a computer with a cd burner would make this less useful, but then any mp3 player without a computer isn't so much fun.
As always the included headphones don't really do the sound justice, but if you have a nice set of your own you shouldn't be too disappointed.

While this player has the ability to play mp3's, has good sound, good anti-skip and a solid cd reading laser what can be annoying is the function.
I'm so used to my mini-disc player controls being on my headphone lead, I tend not to take this out and about anymore as it's not much fun having to retrieve it from a bag to change volume, skip a track or read the stored information on the screen (oh yeah, it does that too and can tell you the name and composer of an mp3).
What I was pleased with was its ability to play and play and play when my home cd player retired itself. I just plugged this straight into my main system and was never let down.
Advantages: excellent performer, last forever Disadvantages: extra base not very effective.
I was very pleased to see the SL MP30 on this website. I still remember when i got my first paycheck at the age of 16 flicking through music catalogues looking at things to buy to fuel my passion for music, i came across lots of CDmp3 players. this was about 4years ago and the memory based Mp3 players were very rare and the memory maximum was about 64MB. That was not enough for me, i needed something to carry atleast 700mb worth of songs, i needed a CDMp3player.
So i finnally found a sony CDmp3 player which i bought and it kept turning off every few days, it was a good player but it wasnt very reliable so i returned it hoping for a replacement. The shop did not have the same sony so they offered me the Panasonic SL MP3CD to keep me happy, even though it was a few pounds more expensive than sony's. I took it grudgingly thinking ...
Advantages: good sound quality, good D sound anti-skip system, earphone remote control, plays mp3 and wma Disadvantages: doesn't support ID3tags
I have had the Panasonic SL SX420 for awhile now, and I am very happy with its performance. I was looking for a cd/mp3 portable player that would be sylish, with long lasting batteries and with a good anti-skip system. SL SX420 offers all of it.
The player has a similar design as other Panasoniccd players with the main function buttons (memo, mode, eq, play, stop, ff, rew, nad volume)on the front of the player. The only functions that are on the side of the cd player are hold and open button. Some of the functions (volume, hold, eq, play/stop, ff, and rew) are also on the remote control which really makes it easy to control the cd player when you have it in your pocket or in your backpack.
The sound quality of the discman is excellent and very clear. It has s-xbs, s-xbs+, live, an normal eq settings. The volume goes all the way ...
Advantages: Good basic player Disadvantages: reliability lets it down
-rechargeable batteries on mp3 songs (30 hours with CD data) which is enough for even the longest journey! An AC (230-240 V) adapter is supplied for mains use so you can listen to your mp3s for as long as your little heart desires. The problem with this is that the player is then permanently on standby, so you have to turn it off at the plug so that it is not ?live? and eating up your elecy bill. There is a little battery icon on the display so you know when its about to die on you. I?ve just been reading through the instruction booklet and just realised that you can actually recharge rechargeable batteries inside the mp3player, although I don?t have any rechargeable batteries to try this out with.

Manufacturer's product description
The SV-SR100 joins a collection of innovative Panasonic multi-format audio products that enable consumers to enjoy personal music mixes at home, outdoors and in the car.Until now, a PC was required to transfer audio data from a music CD to an SD Memory Card. With the new SV-SR100, just place a CD and an SD Memory Card in the unit and press a button. That's all it takes to record music using the AAC compression format, with sound quality that rivals that of a CD. There's no longer a need to transfer music data from the CD to a PC's hard disk drive, and then use a USB reader/writer or a PC card adapter to record the compressed data onto an SD Memory Card. The SV-SR100's one-step operation brings unprecedented ease and convenience to SD audio entertainment. In addition to playing back music in the AAC format, the SV-SR100 also plays back music recorded in MP3 format, as well as the increasingly popular WMA format, which is used in Windows XP. The SV-SR100 is also equipped with an analog input terminal that allows users to transfer music collections from cassette tapes and other analog media to an SD Memory Card.
Compact with an excellent battery life and great sound quality, audio cd, mp3 and atrac compatible, the atrac cd creation software is very user friendly
Atrac software only works on windows pcs, not macs, included headphones feel cheap, doesn’t feel particularly robust (*)
