After using a small, plain black TV for too long, we decided it was time to upgrade to a bigger, better quality screen, so at a trip down to comets picked up the Panasonic TX28DTX11 for just over £600, a little expensive considering its not a flat screen, but it is well worth the money.

The TV comes with all the necessary wires and cables to get it working, and an instalation book, i didn't use the booklet however, as i didn't see any need for it :-) After setting it up and turning the TV on, it does a channel scan, which scans for all the available channels you can get, as it finished the scan we flicked through and aswell as channels 1-5 we had more!! ITV2 + 3, BBC 3+ 4, loads of radio stations, bid up tv, UKTV history and many more. Yes, the TV comes with an intergrated digital tuner, allowing you to get Freeview channels.
However, in our area (Knowle, in Birmingham) not all the Freeview channels can be picked up without buying a booster, so we are constantly being prompted to scan for new channels, losing old channels we had, and picking up new ones, (channels 1-5 are always available however) This is quite annoying to find out you have ITV 2 available one day, then the next it has gone. If you are considering buying one, i reccomend you find out if your area is 'compatible' with Freeview and able to receive all the channels, as we should have done so before.
Anyway, thats not a major problem for us, as we aren't 'big' TV watchers, we don't even have SKY, so any extra channels are welcome (even if they randomly appear and dissappear!! )
The TV also features Panasonic's award-winning Quintrix Flat Picture Tubes, which creates excellent picture quality. It is also a 100Hz TV, scanning the picture at twice the of 50 Hz TV's, giving excellent quality. While this quality is not noticeable after having the TV for a few months, when you watch a LCD screen you will notcie the 'downgrade' in picture quality. The quality on the TV is brilliant, and makes those action films seem that little bit more realistic, which is great as i love them!! This is the main reason we decided to go with CRT as opposed to LCD, and i don't regret the move at all. If you have plenty of space, you won't regret getting a good quality CRT screen.
The TV is very easy to use, and features the same channel scrolling thing you get on Sky, allowing you to see what is on now and next on each channel, without having to change channels or open up teletex. This is a very useful feature, and is very simple to use. You can also 'book' a show, and the TV will give you an onscreen prompt prior to the program so you don't forget. I have never really used this feature, only when we got it as it was a novelty! but i can say it is very easy to do.
The TV has 2 Scart sockets at the back for connecting to games consoles and video players. It also has connections on the front which we used for connecting our video camera up, this was very easy to do, as normally you would have to scramble around the back trying to plug the cables in, this is made much easier by front access.
We also bought a Panasonic DVD player and a Panasonic VHS player, and when plugged in, they all synced with each other perfectly, without any prompting. I don't think happens if the players are a different brand, but it was very nice to have everything synced and working perfectly without having to manually go through menus selecting this and that :-)
It did come with a stand, however we have never used this, so it has remained unopened in the packaging. I can't say how easy or difficult it is to set up, but they had one in display in Comet and it did look very nice and had space underneath to hold the players, games consoles e.t.c.
The screen size (68 cm visible screen) is fine for what we use it for, and the pure flat means the picture doesn't lose quality or look funny when watched from different angles. It also has 40 watts virtual Dolby Sound, which gives good quality sound, however it is only coming out the speakers on the side of the screen, and when you plug in a home cinema system (which can be picked up for very little nowadays) the experience is a lot better.
Ok, here are the features the TV has (copied off the Panasonic website) 28 inch tube 68 cm visible screen Silver Colour 1 year parts warranty 1 year warranty Videotext/Teletext Sound System Stereo 71 Screen Size in cm 28 Screen Size in Inch 16:9 Screen Format Realflat Picture Scan Single Scan 100 Hertz Frequency Digital Tuner
As you can see, there are plenty of features, and we have never had any problems with the TV.
I would recommend this TV to anyone after a new one, if you can't make your mind up between LCD and CRT take a trip down to your local electronics store and look at the difference in picture quality, thats what did it for me!
If you are considering buying one, i would say to take these steps: Check if your area can receive Freeview without having to buy extras. If you are also buying new DVD/VHS players, buy Panasonic ones as the sync perfectly. You might want to get a 5.1 speaker system aswell, especially if you enjoy your films, as it makes the films more enjoyable to watch.
Ok, so that is my review of my new TV, it is an excellent TV, and we have no regrets in sticking with good old ''fat'' TV's instead of going with the new slim ones!!
Advantages: picture quality, look of tv Disadvantages: sound
When i purchased this tv last August it ticked all the boxes and thats what this review is based on.
I found the tv easy to set up, and was impressed with tjhe ease of the on screen menus. Once operating, i find the picture quality excellent with the colours crisp and true. I suppose if there was one weakness it would be the sound, but this was really only noticed when trying to play music through the tv.
As for an intigrated free view tuner... ... ...have an extra box and cables lying around is great. So.. whats bad. Difficult to say really. I suppose now looking back i wonder how much the 100Hz technology has benifitted me, but then its difficult to say without a 50Hz screen next to it for comparison. All in all, i'd recommend this to anyone who wanted excellent picture quiality in their living room. ...
