These CF-28’s come with the touch screen option install and the touch sensitive glide pad. The normal glide pad works using the electrical charge of the person’s finger and will not work when tried with an inanimate object. The touch screen works in combination with the glide pad or external mouse (if one has been connected), generally the touch screen is easier to use (a pointing pen is supplied) except when trying to select an object on the edge of the screen. The glide pad feels a little sluggish when compared to the other type, but these can used with the pointing pen.
The speed of the CF-28 is a little slow when compared to other laptops, but as there are no external moving parts (giving it a better IP rating) this can be expected. The graphics card allows for a screen area of 1024 by 768 and with a 32bit colour depth. The keyboard layout (as with all laptops) takes a little getting use to, but I found has nice responsive feel.
To give the CF-28 better protection the Hard Disk is encased in a stock absorbing gel. The casing has been design to with stand higher impact than that of standard laptop. I know this from personal experience when I accidentally drop a CF-28 from a height of about 5 feet. The CF-28 landed on it side, but apart from a little dirt I could not tell if the laptop had been dropped.
The CF-28 has now started to appear of the second hand marked at a vastly reduced price and is ideal for someone who wishes to have a sturdy laptop, to perform standard office type operations.
When these were purchased about 2 years ago I think they cost around £3000, I am not sure as we pruchased 33 of then with a few extra batteries as well.

The CF-28 is a rugged notebook PC that stands up to the vibration, shock, water and dust encountered in the field. At construction sites or on patrol, it withstands environments that are simply too rough for ordinary PCs. Toughbooks have already earned high praise for robustness at a variety of work sites. The Transflective LCD on the 12.1-type LCD model uses external light as its light source. This means that as the day gets brighter, the screen gets brighter. On a clear, sunny day, screen brightness can reach 850 candelas - that's more than seven times as bright as conventional models. There's less glare, too, thanks to new anti-reflection coating technology that reduces reflectivity to just 0.5%. You get a clear, easy-to-read display even outdoors - a big improvement over conventional touch-screens. Indoor viewing is also fine, thanks to backlighting that assures good readability. Plus, the 13.3-type LCD model features an anti-glare screen that improves viewing ease and comfort even when there are reflections from outdoors. The CF-28 offers a host of communications options to meet virtually every working situation you might face. In addition to the standard built-in modem, an optional Wide-Range Wireless function lets you download data from the field without having to connect to another PC or peripheral. The CF-28 is also optionally wired LAN, wireless LAN and GPS functions ready for office use. An internal damper protects the display, absorbing impact and preventing bending or twisting. The surface of the LCD screen is water-resistant, and a rubber seal around all screen edges protects the unit even if water gets inside the casing. The CF-28 is especially designed to endure long use in sunlight. Its rugged design means you can concentrate on the job even when the going gets rough. Keyboard circuitry is thoroughly sealed for water protection, and integrated with the keyboard and touch pad in a single panel that is itself sealed from the PC's interior. Therefore, even if water enters via key gaps, it cannot reach the CPU and other internal circuits. Integrated with the keyboard, Pressure-Sensing Touch Pad pointing device is water resistant. It operates in response to pressure, so you can control the cursor even with wet hands, while wearing gloves. Highly reliable, it avoids the dust and dirt collection problems of track balls. All connection terminals have aluminum covers and rubber seals, eliminating openings that could let in dust or water. The terminals are also protected against dropping impact. Hinges open and close smoothly, thanks to dust stoppers that prevent dust buildup. The CF-28 casing is constructed of a durable magnesium alloy that assures superior resistance to shock. A special coating makes the entire case scratch-resistant, and an elastomer coating on the base helps to prevent the CF-28 from scratching other surfaces that it is placed on, like the hood of a car.
