This panasonic toughbook really is a tough, hard wearing laptop. You can drop it and it will still work. A work collegue actually drove his car over this laptop and it still worked exactly the same. It is a laptop that certainly lives upto its name. This baby puts the TOUGH in Toughbook.
Do not be put off by the extra weight, chunky and basic look of this laptop. Remember looks can be deceiving.
The keyboard is one of the best I have used on a laptop. The mousepad is not as nice but hey this is a toughbook. Hit the pad hard and it works like a dream.
You have all thefunctionality and speed of aPentium 4 1.8ghz processor backed up by 256mb of ram. So not only do you get a hard wearing laptop butit is quick too.
The hard drives in these I have found are a bit suspect. In some of the machines they work fine for ages. In others they seem to dir very quickly. Within months. Yeah you can get a replacement under warrenty but that does not replace your documents.
I only used the cd rom for a couple of weeks as I bought a CD-Writer, but it seems reliable and of usual speed.
The sound from the machine is good. The combination of the sound card and speakers give a good clear and crisp sound that can go to a good volume level.
The screen is of a high quality. With good resolutions and very clear, crisp and precise view. I get a better quality picture from the panasonic screen tha my Acer TFT.
The Com port is as standard on any pc as is the parrellel port. The 2 USB2 ports are excellant. USB2 gives the extra speed to communicate with your devices quicker and I have found a marked increase in my internet speed. All of these ports are kept nicley in the back of the laptop behind a nice panel that flips down. Good design.
I have not used the 2 PCMCIA ports so I could not coment on them.
The case for this laptop is far from flash, however it is very hard wearing and solid. It has an easy to use handle that slides back inside the laptop for easy flush storage.
Overall I would highly recommend this laptop for anyone who is out and about a lot and needs a hard wearing laptop that may get thrown about or knocked off a desk. The only thing missing is built in wireless access. But you can get this by using a wireless PCMCIA card which I have seen working quite successfully.
I am running Windows XP Professional & SP2 very successfully and quickly. I have also seen these running Windows 2000 very well.
